The Unpopular Opinions Thread (Read OP)

Boygroups aren't popular in Korea anymore because their songs are not public friendly. Boygroup songs are all about dance and made for concerts not for casual listening.

The popular girl groups songs in Korea right now like dun dun danc, next level, chi mat ba ram, asap, alcohol free are not dance intensive. They have easy dance steps which public can dance to.

Kpop fans say bts recent songs like dynamite and butter are boring but these songs do well in Korea and Japan because they are radio friendly and pleasant to listen to with headphones, unlike many boygroups songs.

BTS's 2020 releases On and Black swan didn't do well in Korea by their standards because they were more like typical boy group songs.

BTS may be wary of releasing songs like On now that they are not in their peak years. Big3 companies are preparing their boygroups to debut soon after 2022 starts and bts goes on tours and leaves space for new boygroups.

Winner and SF9 songs are public friendly too. That could be why they are not that popular among international kpop fans. Why they are not more popular in Korea I cannot know. Surprising since Winner had a big hit song and are from a big3 company.

Brave Girls recent comeback is a very good example of why a bigger budget isn't always better. They went from simple yet beautiful mvs, like Deepened, Rollin tropical version and We Ride, to a way too over the top and in your face mv like Chi Mat Ba Ram.

I think all this newfound money had Brave Entertainment acting a bit too cocky and overzealous. Just because you can afford a dozen backup dancers doesn't mean you should use them. Just because you can afford a dozen random dramatic glittery outfits doesn't mean you should wear them. Just because you can afford a dozen different sets and special effects doesn't mean you should jampack them into your MV a la Blackpink.

Aespa isn't untalented at all, but none of the members are main dancer material. Winter and Karina are on the same level and it's a bit sad they don't have a stand out dancer. But I can live with it

Also I'd say that any blink critisizing Aespa for their lack of talent is hypocrite, let's be honest the only talented one in the bunch is Lisa

Being super talented and attracting people with your talent are 2 different things. It’s sad but being the best dancer, singer or rapper in your group doesn’t guarantee you a lot of fans. Talent is obviously important but you also need to capture peoples attention with it. In Sixteen, Jiwon was unarguably the best vocalist there but her stage presence was terrible (she’s amazing in Fromis_9). Same goes to Eunsuh who was a great dancer but boring on stage.

Kpop fan don't have to insert their faves into everything.

It's not a competition. But kpop fans wanna put their faves in everything; even in places they don't belong.

"Best kpop vocalists?" - "[insert idol name who can't even sing] ofc, I love her voice"

"Idols breaking Korea beauty standards" - then list Idols who fit the beauty standards to the T

Annoying AF, your faves don't have to be in everything.

And the note of fitting the beauty standards. Some of the few Idols that don't fit the standards are Yeji & Hwasa but not mentioned very often...I don’t know why 🥴

Over praising/crediting your faves is one of the reason they don't gain (new) fans.

I remember when I had gotten into kpop. Kpop fans talked so highly of their faves, that's okay. But over praising might lead to disappointment. Priase them to the limit they deserve, not above (nor below).

When I had gotten into kpop, I often heard "xxx is the best Rapper ever, flow on point, lyrical genius". When I went to check xxx out, xxx was okay, no lying but xxx wasn't so great and I was very disappointed. Xxx didn't deserve that amount of praising.

Another one, "www is the best vocalist". Honestly, I was expecting a Whitney Huston/Mariah Carey vocalists, base on the way her fans spoke. But I was once again disappointed. She's okay, might even be great for kpop standards (May be that's what her fans meant but the way how they talk as if she she THE BEST, nobody can't hold a candle to her).

Rose's singing is indeed difficult to digest sometimes, specially in the higher notes. She may not be a very good main vocal, but people who call her untalented seem to forget about her dancing skills. In most other groups, she would easily be the main dancer.  And I thought of this even before I was her fan!

I was surprised to find this girl who was nearly as good as Lisa in their dance practice vids. And her stage presence comes out so naturally, she never looks tryhard even with an edgy concept. Yet barely any casual fans used to acknowledged this. Welp, all thanks to yg pushing one member I suppose.  She had so much more potential than what they gave her, but oh well... I hope she rises from now on. If she keeps serving like in that viral coachella fancam, I have hopes.

Oh My Girl is one of those groups where everyone kind of has a star quality about them, so I always found it unnecessary how WM used to give YooA this extra push and make her the center of attention. I'm glad nowadays with their latest comebacks she's played up as just a dancer/vocalist and not a visual/face too, leave those duties to Jiho and Arin. No point in trying to make one member be everything when the group is kinda well rounded out to begin with.

They also need to lighten up on portraying Jiho as this "b-tier" member of the vocal line, that department should strictly be YooA and Binnie. Jiho is a visual/dancer with only slightly above average vocals, and I say that as someone who has her as their bias.

I don't know how unpopular this is but I REALLY miss the times when kpop idols would debut at an older age. Like Kahi & Jungah (After School),  Cao Lu (Fiestar), Jisung (WannaOne), Dara, Bom, Joon Park (g.o.d), Sojin (Girl's Day).

I think I realised this during PD48 when literal 13 year olds suddenly started to appear out of nowhere and when the infamous Side to Side performance happened, it just confirmed this opinion for me lol

The only way I wouldn't be weirded out by children debuting is if their group's concept is age-appropriate for them, I'm not saying they should release Baby Shark remixes either, just no Sistar 2.0 at that age.

I dunno if the problem is ONLY about the songs' concept though, it's probably deeper than that in my opinion. I guess I just don't know how to express the rest properly yet 🤔

TWICE > ITZY vocally and I am not being delusional

I am aware my rep is at risk but let me explain myself:

According to some sources, Lia was a former SM Ent. trainee (I know she didn't actually receive training but she was accepted(?)) but still one of the weakest main vocalists in the industry. 3mix is probably average.

Many fans will use the excuse "they are more stable live", but stability does not equal better techniques, (I do not know the terminologies) and many stans tend to jump to the conclusion that this is true. TWICE is often given more songs out of their range while ITZY is often in their comfortable range.

I do believe ITZY are a very dance - focused group tho.

I can't say much myself since am not a professional and I know nothing about techniques, but I have done my research and this is what some professionals online have said.

I found this on reddit in the UKO subreddit. It was voted almost half popular and unpopular so I do not know how popular this is:

r.i.p. my reputation...

edit: who really negged me

The more every other groups become "self produced", the more I doubt how much self produced their songs are. How much they are writing and composing for a song or is it just a tag given by companies to make a group more appealing to fans! The revenue made from the music rights will go to the company because the artist has contract with them and they have agreement with artists and producers on how to divide the money.

Both of my unpopular opinions have to do with a group I really like - Twice. First when it comes to JYP, I think they have no idea "presently" how to market the group for the future. Twice is in the back-end of their lifespan as a busy idol group. Even if they beat the 7 year curse without losing members, most Kpop groups that have gone beyond 7 (say BEG or Apink) at least slow down and start preparing individual schedules. There is no sign of that with Twice.  It's mostly non-stop comebacks, break, non-stop comebacks, breaks, etc. No real individual branching out for Twice members to prepare for post-Twice careers. Jihyo trained as an actress - zero acting jobs in 6 years. Dahyun is largely seen as the best variety member - when has she had a regular position on a variety show? Even BP, RV, Gfriend, Mamamoo, other big groups of their generation have members with their own individual schedules (not just photoshoots).

We keep hearing that JYP wants to avoid another Miss A situation but at this point that makes no sense - unlike the Suzy situation there is no member of Twice whose popularity completely overshadows the rest and will hurt the group as a whole. Also I don't believe that is even true - before the Taiwan flag incident, Tzuyu clearly seemed to be getting an individual push (individual CFs like the tasteless one of her dancing sexily in the elevator for LG, and several solo variety show appearances without other members even though her Korean was still shaky). And now, 6 year after debut, we seem to be seeing JYP push Twice into the Western market with appearences on "Ellen" and "Kelly Clarkson" - after avoiding America/The West for years and letting Black Pink and to a lesser extent every other major female Kpop group (not even in the Big 3) claim most of the non-Asian fandom. What exactly is JYP's plan here? There doesn't seem to be one.

Speaking of the Western market. It's got to be said - Twice as a group has the worst English skills of any Kpop group of their A-list level and size. PERIOD. This is even more bizarre coming from a JYP group where there's always one (or more) members who can speak English very well and that includes the founder of the company. JYP himself sent Min of Miss A to be trained in the USA so she would have excellent English skills. Every single member of Itzy (including Chaeryeong who was a trainee on Sixteen with Twice) seems to be able to speak and grasp English better than ANY member of Twice.

I've always defended Twice before when it came to the English thing because I don't feel a Korean group built for domestic audiences (or in Twice's case largely built for the Korean-Japanese audience) need to know English at all. I always feel it embarassing when international fans say "English please" or "Speak English" in Vlives to singers who they know are uncomfortable in it....BUT if you are going to start sending the group out to do American TV shows and interviews with English speaking Youtube channels or Western magazines, if you are suddenly going to switch gears and go for that Western audience (which is what JYP seems to be doing lately with Twice) then you should have at least ONE member who can carry an interview and can speak conversational English. Not even fluent English. It just needs to be above basic. Just a single member who can do the speaking.

Twice doesn't even have that - with nine members. Gfriend had Umji and Yuju. BTS has RM. RV has Wendy and Yeri. Blackpink has 3 out of 4 who can do Western interviews (and I would even put Jisoo's English at a higher level than any member of Twice given her level of understanding and improvement). Lesser girl groups like Apink (Naeun), EXID (Hani and LE), WJSN (Dawon and even Exy), Lovelyz (Yein), G-Idle (Yuqi and Minnie), CLC (Eunbin, even Yeeun - not even mentioning Sorn), OMG (Seunghee) or a rookie group like STAYC (Sieun) have at least one member who can do the interview. Heck, even Brave Girls has Yujeong who went to international schools in HK and can speak pretty good English. Almost every group these days has one English speaker - by design. Except Twice. Mamamoo may be comparable - but they have just 4 members and have never even tried for the US/Western market.

The best English speaker in the group (and also according to some Onces the only one who seems interested in learning the language) seems to be Nayeon (not Mina) and I would still put her current skills behind all of Itzy. Some of their English interviews in the last year are painful (not their fault, its JYP). In a group this size the only other that comes to mind that has such low levels of conversational English is Loona (and they are nowhere near the international powerhouse of Twice). I know this is very controversial since I would have been at the other end of this opinion just a year ago but some of the interviews I've seen with the Twice members where they are made to speak English for the camera just has made me feel secondhand cringe for them. JYP should have said no or prepared them better (especially since English lessons seem par for the course for EVERY JYP group not named Twice).

StayC is one of the least talented group out there. Their main vocalist can’t support at all, they don’t have any stand out dancer, they don’t even have a strong rapper to save it like Idle and Soyeon. People hype up their live singing but the singing itself just ain’t good.
