The Unpopular Opinions Thread (Read OP)

I think its not only disingenuous, but kind of dangerous that people in the industry lie about how great their company is, when we(i.e fans) have seen over the years how that company mistreated them and other people. Not to mention things co-workers let slip of things going on behind the scenes. Or that they've constantly and justifiably complained about certain things for the longest time. Leading to them talking about how they want to eventually buy that company or own their own company in a separate capacity. Yet now they are somehow confused as to why there are fans that don't trust their company?

It's only continuing to fuel company stans' delusions that the company in question is, 'perfect' and should never be rightfully criticized. People already throw groups they stan under the bus to make excuses for a company's shady/or questionable treatment. Sometimes even romanticizing that hardship, or abuse to brag even more.

I'm not sure how many more mishaps/or incidents it will take for people to not be in denial anymore. It's not that people expect a perfect company, because that doesn't exist. One of the main problems is the denial, or lying about things to use as fodder for bragging. Especially at this time.

-I don't think people should be taken seriously when they blame their age group, gender, college level ect for dumb or illegal things they or someone they're a fan of does. At the end of the day, you're only responsible for your own behavior. So you can't keep using the 'everybody does xyz' lie/excuse to make what's been done acceptable to avoid accountability or jail time.

-I'm ready for the trend of people cheering on self-destructive behavior as 'self care'(when its obviously the complete opposite) or 'relatable enough to emulate', to end.  Life is hard enough, and some people are really too easily influenced by the worst things. Which then leads to making life even harder for themselves and those who care about them.

It really has gotten worse over the years with social media and people constantly broadcasting their self-destructive habits or choices. Sometimes I know its done as a cry for help(and people miss that point frequently for entertainment purposes), other times people want it validated as conventional instead of getting help. Overall it gets more disturbing as the days go by.

There has always been too much of an obsession with owning expensive art supplies over years. Sometimes there really isn't much of a difference between certain student and professional grade traditional art supplies(i.e if you replace a bullet nib with a brush nib for inexpensive alcohol-based markers, you'll get the same results as the brush tipped copics). Sometimes the only difference between the two is that with the expensive product you're paying for the brand name and advertisement costs. It's like paying for national brand food all the time, when your cheaper private label/store brand is the same or better.

There is also the case of people seeing buying the inexpensive stuff as; 'needing to work your way up after using beginner products', in the same vein of an artist struggle. Something that HAS to be done and seen. It's a badge of honor to complain about certain inexpensive brands as being crappy, but your new expensive supplies are the most perfect in every way(even when they aren't sometimes) to show how you've leveled up as an artist.

Another issue; I think its strange that whenever a popular artist youtuber compares cheaper supplies with expensive ones they backhand compliment the former with, "wow these are actually amazing! You can get great results with this xyz cheaper product. I can't tell the difference between the two...but the xyz expensive brand is still much  better :)".
It's like which is it, you got the same result(sometimes a better one), so how is the cheaper brand worse??

That's why people need to take their word with a grain of salt, use their eyes and common sense. Some artists may have been given the expensive brand for free to use(i.e a low key brand ambassador), or they don't want buyers remorse after spending so much on those expensive materials so they're being delusional on purpose. It is possible to like that particular brand better, but whenever they phrase a review a that way I can't help but be suspicious.

That isn't to say there aren't art supplies made with fillers that reduce its quality.Or that there's a certain supply in your collection that compliments a different brand than you're used to ect. Its not always cheaper brands that can suffer from those occurrences.

Also, it is fun to try new supplies every so often, cheap or not. I've owned samples of expensive products that I've liked, but sometimes enjoyed my art more after coming across their cheaper counterparts years later on. You may get something from the cheaper brand that makes your art look better, than if you used the expensive one.
Technique and learning to use the tool that compliments your art is the most important thing too. Just do what you need to personally for your art, ignoring the outside art community drama/politics/status quo.

The most recent episode of Mr. Robot was the weakest of the series(so far, hopefully it won't happen again). It was unnecessary, coming across like a niche fanfiction from a small part of fandom come to life. Not that there hasn't been filler episodes before, but this recent one entirely lacked what makes the show great in comparison to other filler eps.  There's also the fact that one half of that pairing shown overstayed her welcome plot-wise a long time ago. There's no need to continue having focused episodes on her, so I'm not too sure what the writers are thinking.  Then the other half of the pairing was out of character for the purpose of this 'ship'.  She was one of my favorite character's before and the writers messed up a bit with her. Overall, the ep felt like a waste of an hour. Which is disappointing for an amazing show that's currently in its last season.

Unpop opinion about Parasite 2019, don't click if you don't want spoilers

I think people are missing the point of the film in reducing it to, "eat the rich". If that were the case, shouldn't the poor/or homeless, "eat the lower-working class" since they are below them as well? The film showed that once the entire Kim family scammed their way in by becoming lower working class, they literally/symbolically kicked down those lower to them in the basement. The Kim's also lose their humanity throughout the whole process, like the rich in the film did(by reducing the poor to stereotypes/smells/racist entertainment for them at b-day parties).

Then there's the grooming the underage daughter, taking other hardworking people's jobs(the father tried to justify this and ease his guilt by saying the driver probably got hired somewhere else) and attributing to ending the life of the housekeeper/and husband who had nothing but each other. Of course, there are a lot of gray areas of the film that people overlook just for the sake of saying, "down with capitalism" and "eat the rich" as I mentioned earlier. People are looking for too much of cringe soundbites regarding that.

Despite the fact that the Kim's were frequently unemployed, needing to make ends meet, they are not heroes at all in the slightest just because they scammed a rich, stuck-up family. You'd be ignoring a bigger point of the film with those types of attitudes. All of that really shows, there's always someone in a lower class than you that can take your place if they were desperate enough to depending on the culture+ current economic situation of society.

-If you aren't fan of certain hair styles, certain styles of piercings or tattoos in general, why force yourself(or guilt trip other fans) to like them even if someone in a group you stan has them(even for non kpop celebs)? Obviously you can't change anything about it. It would also be wrong to harass people over it on either side. I just don't think there's anything wrong with saying you aren't a fan of those things in reference to celebs you like.  We know that should treat idols, actors etc just like we would any other person outside the industry, but will trip over ourselves to support something we aren't a fan of, just because they're celebs? Its really not worth it. I also understand people are worried about being too negative in the current climate, which is understandable so idk. There needs to be a balance. You're allowed to have personal preferences like that, just like the people you stan. It doesn't mean you're automatically being hateful or an anti.

-On a similar note, I think certain Korean sites completely removing comments is no where close to solving the issues they have. I don't think its even putting a band-aid on their problems. It's not possible to remove everything from every site with an article, or set out to sue everybody with critical, rumors or negative comments. Or even having fans with big social media accounts creating narratives to control is not helping anything either. Something else has to be done.

-I think people get a little too obsessed with plastic surgery 'research', to the point where they start seeing it in people who haven't had any. Like instead of taking it as standard inane entertainment gossip, they go overboard. Sometimes becoming severely distraught or angry after being corrected about this person and that person not having any surgeries. I think at that point its better to just take a break from the topic.

-Regarding the Final Fantasy 7 remake, people are going overboard dog-piling on other fans with any tiny criticism people have with the demo recently. Even people who are basically repeating similar things as other fans have(like how the boss battle throws a lot at you even though the characters give you instructions it),  are being attacked. It's not that serious. It's turning people off from interacting with the fandom with the unnecessary gatekeeping. Just keep enjoying the demo and the game when it releases.

It's not up to fans to decide if or when someone who is a victim of bullying by their fave should 'get over it', or complain how long ago it was. It's the victim(s) prerogative if they want to forgive or air out what was done to them. And no not everyone was a bully or raging misogynist or worse to their classmates or friends. That's not normal behavior. And much of the time when someone gets away with that uncorrected they continue to act that way as adults.

Not to mention even if victims 'backtrack' their statements its usually because they can't afford to get sued even if they are telling the truth. I understand being a fan of someone for many years and hearing news about how horrible of a person they were/or still are. I've also had to stop being a fan of several people recently and in the past. It is difficult to let go, but empathy for victims should always come first. That should be without question.  Fans need to understand there's a pretty huge cultural issue with bullying in Korea that is handled in the worst possible way in comparison to other countries.

We all have to own up to our past and current issues. Putting a celeb on a pedestal and ignoring facts because you want someone to stan forever won't change the trauma they brought to other people.

What also comes into play is that certain companies are already known for constantly lying to fans about things or bribing victims to protect their bottom line(i.e their profitable groups or popular employees), how are they suddenly worth hearing out to clear issues like this??

Fan should have been keeping this mind since this whole thing started;

-I haven't been much of a fan of Loona's music for a year now. I always find myself disappointed now with a recent release and just go back to their predebut/early debut music. It's also extremely messed up that so many people working for bbc haven't been paid for such a long time.  Then there's the years of financial issues boiling over recently with bbc(and the rumors of money laundering along with it) despite the cfs/solo activities certain members have been doing so idk what to think as things can go in any random way with the future for them. It's just disappointing how things have turned out.

-I'm not sure why its not common sense but companies/schools make it worse for themselves when they don't immediately fire/or expel bullies in the workplace/school. They know who they are already, so no sense in them dragging their feet about things. Then in the case of friends turning into bullies, unfriending them for their mental health. I know the latter, unfriending people, is difficult because you feel as if you'd be lonely without them or you knew them for years and think they can change. But you deserve better than someone antagonizing you all the time. You don't owe them anything.

With workplace/school bullying, I know companies only care about their money bottomline. However, in the long run since they don't care about victims they should at least care they are messing their own money up by constantly covering for vile people(and proving they're just as vile too by nurturing that environment). It's better to just let them go instead of punishing the victim(s). There are more well deserving people that can replace them that won't give you any trouble.

-There are definitely some fandoms worse than others. Some are mid-tier/average, some are horrible but then some are just the most horrific fandoms ever I've ever had the misfortune of coming across(and leaving) in my years of being a fan of many things/or people. The worst ones are spending their days for years constantly and consistently harassing, sending death threats, doxxing ect or covering for other fans that do those things by saying, 'there are worst fandoms out there'. Often are fueled by making whomever they stan a martyr despite that person being generally godawful, a criminal(i.e R.Kelly/Seungri etc), needing to be charged as a criminal, or defending obvious predators by threatening or siccing their fans on victims over the years(i.e Nicki Minaj).

Some (Animal Crossing)New horizons unpopular opinions;
-The new additions in the update are perfect, but I do really wish devs added multi-crafting, as well as npcs/villagers specifically addressing your male or female character as the gender you chose at the beginning of the game again.

Previous games did a great job of doing the latter as it made the game even more personal like the characters were speaking to you directly as a form of immersion. So, although I do love the character interactions, players only being called by his/or her Island rep's name and spoken to in general terms removed that personal touch/personality from New Horizons that existed in the earlier games. Contrary to popular opinion, its that and not the fact that the characters used to verbally abuse you in previous games that gave them more 'personality'.

Which I'm still not sure why people missed that since fans can't even handle their favorite villager asking to leave(despite the fact they don't leave on their own anymore), or people publicly correctly discussing time traveling as cheating(which is also weird considering how low stakes animal crossing is) or racism in the community yet they want characters in a cute game treating them like garbage again?

-Characters being business partners/besties/roommates or coworkers =/= couple. So, I'm not sure how anyone ships the npcs that aren't already married(Cyrus/Reese, Kapp'n/Leilani) or even villagers for that matter. It's off putting to me personally since friendship is a key theme in the series yet we all have to keep constantly stumble on shipping, or gross porn posts in Animal Crossing hashtags.

-I understand the game helped a lot of people during the beginning of the pandemic, but there are really too many people with unhealthy fixations on certain aspects of the game, being creeps/racists, scamming people(out of in-game bells and irl money) etc then using the game to express those things publicly and getting angry when people discuss/rightfully condemn it. And on that note, the game is wholesome, but a good chunk of the community is nowhere close to being that way. I've met some good people but I've seen/come across some messed up ones.

-I'm not sure why fans say crafting/building, having money/banking  aspects of the game are geared towards only adult players. The series has always been geared towards kids, this game included. Mostly training them in the sense of paying taxes, having a job, meeting new people(animals) different from you, architecture, banking, responsibilities etc. Kids always mimicked that from adults by playing grocery store, bank or having toys that reiterated that. Even the added crafting is just arts and crafts we did as kids. Of course adults relate to those those things because we do those things now but use the game as a pleasant escape from real life(like any other video game). That's about it.

-Nintendo isn't printing a limited amount of amiibos, they have the stock considering how insanely cheap amiibos are to make. It's just that they have always been slowly drip feeding stock for stores/online and for themselves for past series cards, just like they're doing now with series 5 cards. They do it on purpose as a way to look like they're fixing the scalper situation, when really its gotten worse since the pandemic. They don't care because they like imposing false scarcity like  they usually do anyway. They even admitted it when the series 5 cards went on preorder from the Nintendo store and they offered a random previous series amiibos with your order. Now stores have all of a sudden gotten the sanrio cards from awhile ago again but are only being given only 2-5 packs for series 5 amiibos per store. I know Nintendo sees themselves more as a mafia-esque toy company before anything else but its a shame they get away with this so much, for so long.
