The Unpopular Opinions Thread (Read OP)

Ppl keep blaming and saying fangirls will drop idols if they start dating but the point is KPOP is so popular and kpop has the following it does BECAUSE that’s what THEY sell. If from the beginning it was just about music and performance it wouldn’t have that large frenzy following nor that hype. It’s a double edged sword. If you want to be respected as an ‘artist’ by all means just drop songs and go. Leave out the fan service and the cozy vlives and all that jazz and no one is going to pester you about relationships or anything. You can’t have the cake and eat it too :derp:

What NCT lack isn’t talent or looks or good music (they have that, it’s SM after all) what they lack is a star. People really under estimate star power. This is something beyond talent/looks and it’s about appeal. I think this is primarily because of the NCT system. Their system doesn’t allow anyone to stand out distinctly.

People are seriously confused about cultural appropriation vs trying to emulate American fashion. I’ve lived in both Asia and America and the thing is where I lived emulating American culture was highly popular. Fashion music dressing everything. And in the last 10 or so years hiphop culture is repsentative of America in a lot of Asian countries. Everyone wants to emulate that.

Cultural appropriation is a thing I don’t disagree. But the American dream and the fascination with America in Asia goes beyond individual cultures in America. They want to get dreads and wear street fashion because that’s how their favorite rap stars act or favorite actors look like.

This has ALWAYS been the case and is more of a testament to just how deep hip hop culture permeated and how it’s at the forefront of American culture.

There are fights worth fighting for but this was always one that I thought stems more from the lack of understanding Asian culture and it’s deep rooted fascination with all things American.

Cultural appropriation requires a difference in power and the ability to negatively impact the said culture being appropriated. It’s relevant in a multicultural society like America where opportunities are lost because of cultural appropriation. The greatest product that America sells is it’s supposed greatness and a by product of that is people trying to copy and be more like America. That’s all there is to it.

Being a company stan is ingrained in kpop. Do I even know which label Taylor Swift is signed to? Or Ed Sheeran? Do I care if those agencies sign other artists? No idea and I literally don’t care. But kpop idols are products. It’s like being a fan of a brand. That’s how kpop stans view them. And this won’t change. This is why they will never be regarded as artists or musicians because that’s not how their core audience and fanbase looks at them. Which is honestly a bit sad. Kpop agencies have made idols a product to sell and how well they’re sold indeed.

Jongin basically has 2 type of haters

1. Beautiful girls want to date him and not your own favs so the insecurity jumps out.

2. How dare he break up with the said girls and ruin your delusional shipping where you were vicariously living out your fantasies through the couple.

For all the so called 'being open to relationships' ifans are just as toxic as kfans when it comes to relationships and how they react to them. And as a Kai stan i have a first hand experience on this.

To do the things that YG/Seungri have done you would need the support system that enables you. Make no mistake there is more than a fair chance that his band mates, his lable mates and a good portion of kpop (because after all bigbang is highly popular) were very likely in on the know how of all this.

This just goes to show how you shouldn’t put idols on a pedastal. I see ppl ‘rejoicing’ the downfall of seungri/YG/Bigbang and im here like, your favs were probably not too far from these happenings so I wouldn’t really be that loud tbh.

I really actually just saw someone on Twitter say BOL4 set their comeback date so as to create headlines by beating BTS and BP....  did these ppl even read the lyrics to the BOL4 song? It has so many references to early spring and flowers and sunshine. It’s literally a song made for April that they released in April. Will the clownery never end.

I got into kpop girl groups sometime last year and what I realized was Twice and Balckpink have no variation in their songs. They’re two sides of the same coin. I really loved at  first listening to their songs. But I’m very quickly losing interest. RV have songs I didn’t like as well as song I do like. At the least they try different things and explore. Maybe for some stans just consuming the same thing over and over again is alright but for me SM groups really stand out in terms of how varied their musical releases are. They might not be a hit with everyone but they’re a hit with me.

So that social chart award really IS an sns spamming award LMAO. I remember being told vehemently that it was NOT JUST AN SNS award and it was because the group CHARTED AND HAD REVELANCE. Man it’s hilarious to get confirmation that all it took was a merch bot that tweets nothing more than links to the latest money making scheme SM has planned to get a nomination for BBMA award :’D This is the funniest shit ever.

I was watching this video

and omg Rose. She looks so unnaturally thin. She’s always been thin but this is like... not a good look at all. And the people calling her sexy and all that worry me even more if that’s what they consider sexy. I mean this in the most non bashing way cuz I really do like the girls, but she really needs to look after herself.

Being proud of physical sales in the korean market or kpop scene where it’s actually a part of the kpop culture is one thing. Kpop fans have always loved bulk buying etc

To be proud of that to chart on things like BB200 or the west is just plain embarrassing. If you’re the only one running in the physical album race, it’s not really an achievement. Ppl are buying merchandise in the form of multiple albums, not music.

Only one EXO album was released in the US and US stores and it managed to score in the 20s of BB200. It literally means nothing. It says nothing about exo’s popularity in the United States.

I’m waiting for BB to declare that physical albums will no longer be counted on their charts or like reduce the impact of physical albums on their chart just the way they did for free streaming services like YouTube.

Top groups from 3rd generation boy or girl are indeed bigger than 2nd gen. Kpop is bigger now than it was ever before. More ppl stanning, more exposure and more views more albums sold, in every way 3rd gen artists are more successful than the previous generation. Sure previous generation had japan or China but this level of global appeal didn’t exist and so 3rd gen groups are objectively bigger and more famous than their 2nd gen counterparts.

Sure one can argue about popularity within korea but as far as over all popularity goes, 3rd gen > 2nd gen

People are praising the Love Shot Produce performance and I’m like ????¿¿ why are their voice purposefully pitched up? EXO songs are in general hard but Love Shot is not a hard song to sing compared to some of the other EXO songs and yet most of those boys could not sing it well.
