Did something out of character for my aegyo-hating self and actually sat down and watched MVs for many girl groups that fall under the "pure/fresh/innocent" umbrella (April, Lovelyz, GFRIEND, Gugudan, WJSN, Oh My Girl). To my cynical satisfaction, most of it perfectly fulfilled my preconceived notion of it just being recycled J-pop from 10+ years ago, full of dull, lifeless, interchangeable girls. My dislike of it is now fair.

Except Oh My Girl, who have the unusual position of being overrated-underrated on OH. A good amount of people tend to stick up for them as actually being noteworthy and unique--as unique as one can be in the genre, anyway. I always used to brush it off as delusional stanning, but surprisingly, they were on to something. Sure, it's yet another batch of young girls frolicking around in pastel surroundings, but it's just slightly, slightly more... funky? Fun and young, for sure, but not as much pandering to the innocence fetish. Their bass lines are a little deeper, their vocals a little more mature. Several members have genuine charisma and aren't dumbed down or lost completely in the concept. Soooooo yeah... props to OMG. They actually approach the genre with as much fierceness as they can.

I can't get into most superhero movies. They're so flashy and shiny, everything about them is screaming for me to be entertained, but I'm always bafflingly detached.

Most idols in K-pop dream about getting big right away or somewhat quickly at least, like by their first or second comeback, and they always beat themselves up over not being able to do it. It creates this apology feedback loop between them and their fans that just disheartens everyone. This mentality really needs to change.

I've come to appreciate and prefer a long(er), slow(er) climb because it teaches everyone what actually matters -- the journey, not the destination. I'm happy for any monster rookies that win music shows literally days after debuting, but it's almost a... one-dimensional happiness? Like I'm happy because of general good will, not because I really feel the weight of it. Whereas for any artist that takes years to finally be acknowledged, their breakthroughs have meaning and triumph on whole other levels.

As someone who has stanned Kpop groups that have huge, viral, career-defining hits, I can say with a straight face that it ain't all it's cracked up to be. The hit song they're known for is usually as far from their musical best as possible, and was just reflective of people being sheep and bandwagoning on a craze rather than appreciating any true musical substance. On the other hand, someone like BTS will actually be remembered for their full artistry, for the range and diversity of all they've done, for their series of great songs, no one single blatantly outshining the rest. In some ways, that's more than my Wonder Girls will ever get. All the GP will ever remember is "Omona!" and "T-t-t-t-tell me," and what a goddamn injustice that is when the pop masterpieces that are Wonder World, Wonder Party, and Reboot exist.

So long live the so-called no-hit-song groups. âœŠ An artist being forever defined by that viral hit song that wasn't even them at their best is overrated AF.
