supposedly korea is "investing heavily" in using kpop for soft power purposes, so why do they flounder when the opportunity to really showcase it in a grand way arises?? i don't get it??? it's like they bottomline lack the confidence in their product and it's annoying. like the choice of Garrix. don't get me wrong, his music is enjoyable, but the window of opportunity to have Psy, a korean artist with broad mainstream appeal globally, perform was literally the size of the asian continent. personally i think EXO did a great job. they brought their A game, which was EXPECTED, what was underwhelming was the setting in which they did so. they could've brought out alllll the stops for that one, but it ended up being a surprisingly sombre affair, which is basically everything korea, and kpop, is not. 

 

i might be projecting ofc but there was still this annoying aftertaste of "this is... this is korean pop music... do you like it? is it ok? um... just in case you don't approve we'll throw in some EDM dj for good measure." like for fucks sake. you have a rare momentum right now. grab it by the balls. i haven't watched CL's performance, tho i'm sure she did a great job and i'm sure they snubbed her of fab stage props too...

I swear a lot of times the idols in some of the most delusional ships look mildly similar. I honestly think that’s the big “mystery†as to how these ships come about. Fans from one of the fandoms simply see a slight resemblance without being aware of it and that also lends a certain far fetched “credibility†to it. It’s like subconsciously being attracted to the same type.

for real: i should hate banana allergy monkey. i should. but i don't. it's quirky, doesn't take itself seriously, snatching my beloved orange caramel's crown and i support that. the mv production is expensive, the styling is amazing, the merch is to die for, and everything is just aesthetics overload. there's no creepy feeling that you've actually stepped into a greenwich village porn palace, no fetish-y outfits or lewd longing glances into the camera to contrast a cutesy choreo. it's very very OMGirl. it's filled with attention to detail and a heap of personality. it's not for everyone, but for a nerd like me steeped in jpop and 80's/90's pop culture, it's a dream come to life. the song is just a part of that carefully embellished package. not for everyone, but definitely for the fans. can't resist.

LE deserve more credit tbh, objectively speaking i'd say she's the most skilled female mc's out there in kpop. like girl is gifted, not 'kpop rapper' gifted - her flow is on point that's it.

so i've been watching a lot of reaction vids, since that's something i don't normally do. and i've gotta tell ya, as much as i feel the fans here who hate them bc they're using our favs for clicks etc, and i agree, you can seriously tell when they're genuinely feeling a group or artist. yes, in between they'll play lip-service and humour us with a 'alright yea, that was cute, alright yea' but that's not all of the videos. and they get so excited about the ones they really like, and that just goes to show that a lot of this 'kpop stan on the cross' stuff that, trust me, it's been a thing for ages, isn't always true. there are people out there who are interested, not maybe in YOUR fav group, but they might like something else. and they're not all making fun of their get ups, or makeup ,or *the fact that they're asian*, or accents at all! so basically not all reaction vids are shit, and that some of them 'aren't getting' our own fav groups doesn't make them unable to form a genuine reaction or thoughtful opinion about OTHER groups or acts.

sometimes being *conservative* ironically means valuing what may be considered as stereotypically progressive rights elsewhere, like women's rights, reproductive health and rights, minority rights etc... it depends on country and political context. world is big. politics isn't binary, it's more complicated than simple left - right.

Titles in kpop means nothing, and you appoint your favs at your own discretion. If you want to say that X group is the nations gg, I say go ahead. There’s no definitive criteria, and any fandom would be hypocritical to claim otherwise. Basically if I want to call for example Perfume Asia’s girl group who are you to tell me otherwise?
