PanicInParadise 896
In a month I am finishing my second year of university but the thing is I am not happy with my major at all. I am an architecture student but I feel that's not what I want to do in life. The thing is that if I wanna change my major I will have to start all over and these 2 years will be wasted; plus is not just about the time but also the money I spent...two years of tutoring for the entrance exams (the tutoring was also quite expensive), taxes, and lots of money spent on art supplies. I'd wanna go for a foreign language major but at the same time I don't wanna stop with my architecture courses although all I've gained from them is stress. I'm really torn between those two and I don't know what to do.
aaaaaa 224
Change it, better now than next year or going through it and then absolutely hating the job.
WasteOfLife 600
Well, everything you spent on architecture is sunk costs: you've spent the money whether you take architecture and hate it, or take a different major. So don't be held hostage to the past. But I get that it can be really hard to stop something you've already put so much money into. What if foreign language was your minor, or a double-major? A double major would mean it'd take longer to graduate (again $$$), but maybe only an additional year. PS do you hate architecture, or just the classes? Cuz I've read that architecture is an extremely difficult major but a lot of people enjoy doing it (and make bank) once they're out of school. Deea 6,754
Finish this then go for the next one? More degrees more $$$
Good People 2,455
There's this weird thing where in most cases, you will start to doubt or dislike your STEM major somewhere in the middle or even 3/4 through. This tells you to suck it up and finish it to the best of your ability. You can learn foreign languages along with architecture or afterward. Drop your degree for some languages and you'll regret it for a long time (and if you're broke you'll probably regret it forever) You're just getting a bit fickle, so set your mind to finish your degree no matter what. Architecture matters and it's needed. Anybody can learn a language. If you're a multilingual architect everybody will be impressed. edit: Oh and remember if you're a girl and you really hate architecture, then don't work. Just marry some guy; by simply finishing your degree you raise your family's economic status (you and your husband will be university educated). North and South 4,680
Are you sure then that foreign languages is what you want to do sincerely? What about job opportunities at the end of the day? I would say not to sweat it too much on time or money spent already. If you're going to change they shall be obsolete. If you delay, you'll only waste more of these. However, why are you unhappy with your current major? Do you really believe that this new major is what is right for you? Everyone ends up being stressed from what they're studying, it's totally normal. If you have a career counsellor I would talk to them. It's a big decision and it can impact your life down the line. I think you should do what you want to do, you're already spending money and time so make the decision that you feel is best. I would just caution against making a hasty decision based on emotions only.

I would just caution against making a hasty decision based on emotions only. My computer restarted while I was replying to you guys So I'll make this reply for everyone. I actually wanted to go for a foreign language major since middle school but I have though about the future and decided to do something that will provide me more opportunities and financial support in the future. Since I was relatively good in drawing I decided to go for architecture. Even my neighbour that is an architect advised me not to but I really didn't know what else to do at the time. It's not that I hate the classes or the busy schedule (even if I am under stress 24/7) but I lack the passion and this can be seen in my work as well. I have been thinking about this ever since I was admitted into this university but even then I was thinking the same: time and money invested in it. So I kept going thinking it'll be better and actually enjoy it but I didn't. Also to those saying I should take foreign languages as a minor...things are different in my country and even if I could do it like that, architecture leaves me no time for something else. Even my teachers said to go for something I like cause you can't be an architect if you're not enjoying your job but my family tells me to keep going. Jinni 4,412
Well, I applied to a completely different school and trait this spring. I had a difficult time admiting to myself that my curent major is not what I want at all and so if I get in to that new place, I have effectively waisted years of uni. But I think it is better for me and my mental health in a long run.
Good People 2,455
my family tells me to keep going. They are right. Right now you feel like you can't do it. You will regret it later if you stop the architecture, You've already made two years. The last year will be easiest. Just hang on until then, it's not good to be emotional about this stuff. I am not saying to minor in a language. Just do languages as your hobby, you can learn any language free online, watch great shows/music videos etc in the language, do it as a hobby and have fun with it. But don't drop your architecture. You can get serious about languages when you finish the architecture.

Jinni 4,412
That's my problem... I know I will be happier with a new major but I'd have that regret thinking about all the wasted time I have adopted a new philosophy in my life in the resent years - Happiness comes first. We only live once, why be unhappy if you know that you can be happier somewhere else? Actually non of life experience is in vain really.

It's just that I have this thought in the back of my mind all the time It's 5 years? Make up your mind to get through this next year, then. Try to find some aspect of architecture that you'd enjoy. You have any interest in the homes of the future? Smart homes? Look them up and aim to be an expert in that area.

Also some things are more worth sacrificing for, just be careful to not to spend too much time doing the wrong things.

As I said in my last post, every person is different. What I'm doing with my life might not be good for her. OP is my friend tho so that is the reason why I mainly wanted to share my point of view.
