Beyond the Pink: It Model Fernanda Ly on Her Career-Making Louis Vuitton Turns

 

 

It’s impossible to miss Fernanda Ly. From her bubblegum-pink hair to her eclectic, goth-styled wardrobe, the Aussie newcomer can’t help but stand out from the crowd. Though Ly has only just begun her modeling career, she has quickly become one of fashion’s most-talked-about models. She has the moment she appeared on Louis Vuitton’s Fall runway wearing Nicolas Ghesquière’s designs with her signature dye job to thank for that. And even though her hair caused a mini sensation, she claims her choice of petal pink locks was anything but premeditated. “Really, I just felt like a change,†she says nonchalantly. â€œI’ve been red, a dark red, then I went to blond. There are pictures of me with blue hair, purple hair, all different colors—pink just seemed right at the time.â€

Ly’s affinity for colored locks may have been what first garnered her attention, but her love of modeling is what’s kept her in the spotlight. In the months since her Vuitton debut, Ly has thrown herself into working, shooting with photographers like Juergen Teller and racking up a slew of forthcoming projects. Ly even resurfaced on the runway for Ghesquière during his Palm Springs Resort show. Repeat work with a legendary designer is a benchmark experience for any model, and Ly describes her time spent with Ghesquière as inspiring. “It was amazing, obviously! When we’re doing looks, he is so cool, and he lets each girl know when things are perfect.†

When she isn’t making her way down a runway, Ly is indulging in her passion for books. A voracious reader, Ly knows her manga—Donyatsu, the story of a half-cat, half-donut, is a favorite—but she’s also big on books with a spiritual bent. “Right now I’m reading The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle. It’s about self-improvement, becoming a better person, and staying grounded.†Given the whirlwind changes Ly is currently experiencing, the choice of reading material seems apt. Still, she’s enjoying every moment of her newfound success. “I’ve been here in New York three times in the past month, going back and forth, working and testing, then it is off to Paris. It feels good to be working, but I never thought I would be able to be out here doing all these things. It’s just amazing to have these opportunities.â€

Just on her appearance and vibe she reminds me of Charlotte Free. Both shorty models too, but that doesn't mean shit when you got the likes of Kate Moss and Cara making it massive in modelling despite being short for models too.
