The pastor of a Connecticut church that welcomes LGBT members was gunned down in a drive-by shooting by someone shouting anti-gay epithets.

Hartford police are searching for the driver of a black sedan who fired a total of seven shots at Rev. Dr. Augustus Sealy, (photo left with wife) the pastor of the First Church of the Nazarene in Hartford, as he planted a row of small American flags in front of his church for Memorial Day. The gunman was heard shouting anti-gay slurs as he fired.

Dr. Sealy was hit three times, once in the shoulder, and twice in the leg. One of the shots to his leg broke his femur.

"He kept trying to get up," said Dennis Lee who was the first to reach Pastor Sealy. "I’m stopping him and saying, ‘Don’t move.’ put pressure on the wound. I wouldn’t let him up. He passed out like once but we woke him back up."

Talking Points Memo reported that Deputy Police Chief Brian Foley called the incident a "potential hate crime," citing Pastor Sealy's open-door policy of welcoming LGBT Christians to his church:

"Some language used in the incident — and given where it was, in front of a church known to be accepting of our LGBT community — it led us to have concern that this is a hate crime," Deputy Chief Foley told reporters.

Neighbors held a vigil for Dr. Sealy in front of the church, praying for the pastor while a large police presence kept watch, lest the shooter return. Rev. Elton Adams, an assistant pastor at the church, told Buzzfeed that Dr. Sealy is slowly recovering.

"He has a broken leg because the gunshot broke his femur. He bled a lot." Rev, Adams said. "The pastor is doing much better. We are just praying for his total healing."

The First Chruch of the Nazarene has started an email initiative for Pastor Sealy, where people can send him their get-well wishes and their thoughts. If you would like to send your thanks to Dr. Sealy for being a straight ally, you can do so here.
