Dramas:

Sekai no Chuushin de, Ai wo Sakebu (Yamada Takayuki, Ayase Haruka) - 2004: http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Sekai_no_Chuushin_de,_Ai_wo_Sakebu

The movie version stars Moriyama Mirai & Nagasawa Masami.

Taiyou no Uta (Sawajiri Erika, Yamada Takayuki) - 2006: http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Taiyo_no_Uta

The movie version stars YUI and Tsukamoto Takashi.

Byakuyakou (Yamada Takayuki, Ayase Haruka) - 2006: http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Byakuyako

The movie version stars Kora Kengo and Horikita Maki.

For all three above I prefer the drama versions.

Other good dramas circa 2000 and above:

Summer Snow (Domoto Tsuyoshi, Hirosue Ryoko) - 2000: http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Summer_Snow

Boku no Ita Jikan (Miura Haruma, Tabe Mikako, Saito Takumi) - 2014: http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Boku_no_Ita_Jikan

That's all I can think of right now. Maybe I'll remember more.

Oh and how did I forget 2 tragic and highly-rated Kimutaku dramas!

Sorakara Furu Ichioku no Hoshi (Kimura Takuya, Fukatsu Eri) - 2002: http://wiki.d-addicts.com/Sora_Kara_Furu_Ichioku_no_Hoshi

Great dramas and Kimutaku was so hot!

I can think of some old dorama

- Kamisama, Mou Sukoshi Dake (1998, Kaneshiro Takeshi, Fukada Kyoko)

- Itoshi kimi e (2004, Kanno Miho, Fujiki Naohito)

You should try some SP dorama

- Sukoshi wa, Ongaeshi ga Dekitakana (2006, Ninomiya Kazunari)

- Yuuki (2006, Kamenashi Kazuya) - actually NTV has produced many SPs to annually commemorate their "24-Hour Television" event, so if you're interested you can search for more dorama with a similar plot.

Dorama/movies about bullying (ijime) are pretty tragic too

- Watashitachi no Kyokasho (dorama)

- LIFE (dorama)

- Joou no kyoshitsu (dorama)

- Aoi Tori (movie)

BTW, there's also a less known movie version of "1 liter of tears" starring Onishi Asae. It's less cliché (there's no Asou, her life in hospital is tough & Aya's not as well-rounded as her dorama counterpart) but that's why I find it much more genuine.

I also want to add that the movie version is also more closely accurate to the real life late Aya Kitou's story.
