How did J Soul Brothers become so popular?

Out of nowhere? They had a huge hit with Hanabi two years ago.

Out of nowhere? As an LDH group, that's impossible. They've had major hits in the past. R.Y.U.S.E.I. is simply their breakthrough moment.

Whelp. You'll have to forgive my ignorance as I did not know that

It wasn't unexpected at all. It was actually quite logical. There are are several factors that are in place here. Hanabi was like an appetizer and R.Y.U.S.E.I. was like the entree. But there is more to it than that. The fact that R.Y.U.S.E.I. won the Japan Record Award was a big thing. In a way, this can see seen as a passing of the torch from EXILE, seeing as how they've won this award many times in the past. A lot of things make it seem as if the torch is being passed now. 3JSB appears to be the stars of LDH now while EXILE is on the back burner a bit. EXILE's album was a flop while 3JSB's is the best selling this year so far. It very well could be the best selling of the year. Maybe 3JSB's youth has something to do with it? EXILE on average is older than 3JSB. There's also the fact that sales for some the JE acts are going down / not meeting expectations. LDH serves as idol alternatives so maybe they are gaining former JE fans? I do know that some JE fans are eyeing 3JSB because they are a credible threat. I could see some KPop fans also making the jump because they are basically the same thing as KPop but they're actually Japanese.

I'm a 3JSB fan so i might be biased, but their popularity didn't come out of nowhere. I would agree with the person who said that they are the hottest act out of LDH right now. They have something that EXILE doesn't (youth, a more modern sound, good looking members lol). Them and GENE broke the whole flower boy idols stereotype of Japan and contributed to the fighting chance Jpop has againsg Kpop.

EXILE put in some newer, younger people recently to freshen up the group but I don't think that really matters if they're just dancing the background. They would have to be the vocalists for people to care. And it's not as if a few younger people are going to matter when most of the group is significantly older.

Honestly one of my biggest fears was that EXILE was going to absorb 3JSB like they did with 2JSB, because 3JSB seemed to have overtaken them in terms of popularity after Hanabi. After they put Gun chan in I could breathe a little, and then the JSB brand was introduced so it looks like they want to keep that name alive *phew*. I don't hate EXILE in fact I got into them first before 3JSB, but Omi and Ryuji's voices would be wasted if they could only sing a few lines in every song (or none at all, yikes!)

How is Exile line distro?  3JSB has been totally even in the couple of songs I've paid attention to that for (since no one seems to do cc lyrics for male LDH groups), but I'm not sure that was the case for the 1 or 2 2JSB songs I've listened to (and I haven't actually listened to Exile... didn't pay attention for The Second, either).

It's basically all ATSUSHI and TAKAHIRO. SHOKICHI and NESMITH rarely get lines now. When they do, it's like a bridge that they have to share. That's the reason why THE SECOND from EXILE exists. But if you were going to make that group, they should've never been absorbed into EXILE. They should've been left along as Nidaime J Soul Brothers. Sandaime J Soul Brothers don't really have this issue since there are only 2 vocalists.

I noticed Exile Atsushi and Exile Takahiro individually listed on that chart of celebs, but I think I didn't see Shokichi or Nesmith... then again I'm not sure I saw the 3jsb vocalists there either.

I don't really get why you'd make a 14-member group when you have 2 7-member groups, and then you continue pumping out 7-member groups with 2 vocalists each (well, it just seems that way since 3JSB, Generations, Happiness, and Flower are all 7-member groups currently, though it wasn't always the case for Happiness and Flower and I have no clue about The Rampage or Gekidan Exile.)

SHOKICHI and NESMITH haven't made a name for themselves with the general public yet. 3JSB is just starting to become known to the public, so their vocalists wouldn't be on a chart like that. The familiarity just isn't there yet.

They want to put the dancers and the vocalists on equal footing but nobody really buys that except for their fans.

What chart?

If you're talking about this one http://onehallyu.com/topic/169224-the-nikkei-entertainment-scatter-plots/

these guys were included on it

3JSB: Gunchan, Ryuji, Omi, Naoto

EXILE: Makidai, Akira, Hiro, Takahiro, Atsushi, Naoto, Gunchan, Mendy

GENERATIONS: Mendy

While on this one http://aramajapan.com/ranking/nikkei-entertainment-releases-its-top-30-musical-act-ranking-for-2015/18573/

EXILE and Atsushi both ranked in

EXILE's line distribution is still Atsushi and Takahiro-centric even after Nes and Sho were added in. In some songs they only get to sing the bridge part (e.g. Fireworks), or none at all (e.g. almost everything else). Sho is doing solo stuff now and some of his songs are good (I love Loveholic feat. DI), Nes on the other hand hasn't been doing much outside of THE SECOND. 3JSB's lines are always split equally between Ryuji and Omi. Typically Ryuji opens the song and Omi closes it.

Oh, I meant the first one. I did see the other (non-vocalist) Exile members... how are they abbreviating 3JSB to list those members individually, though?  I still can't find them. ^^;;  Or are they actually using just their names?

Yes they are using their names unlike EXILE who uses EXILE+names.

Here, I encircled their names on this chart so you can see them  :)

R.Y.U.S.E.I. was aboslutely huge; they had super successful crossover projects ("Dear Sister", the drama, and "Hot Road", the movie, both starring 3JSB members) and AVEX invested tons of money in the promotion of their album (TV adverts started MONTHS prior to the release). It wasn't out of nowhere and they have been growing for years but, in my opinion, those were factors that made them explode.

I agree! In that regard and dropping the sales gimmick they used for Starting Over and the fact that I prefer their peers from EXILE, I think their success is honest and well deserved.
