Anyone like Japanese street fashion? What are your opinions on them? And have you tried any of these styles for yourself..or want to?

Here is a simple newbie picture guide for what some of these styles look like and their possible origins:

Lolita

Lolita fashion as a whole focuses on modesty in dress, quality of the garment, and is based on Victorian era clothing. The clothing is intended to show little skin and can be seen as a statement against a sexualized culture. Instead of emphasis on being sexy, the focus is on being elegant, cute, gothic or something else depending on what type of lolita it is. Main subtypes of Lolita are:

Gothic Lolita

Lolita combined with dark gothic elements.

Sweet Lolita

Lolita combined with lighter pink/pastel colored rococo elements and childlike motifs.

Classic Lolita

Not as dark as gothic lolita and not as cutesy as sweet lolita. More mature and sophisticated.

Gyaru

Gyaru as a whole has an image of youth rebellion against the typical Japanese ideal woman with white face/dark hair, who is demure and subservient; Gyaru ladies dress for themselves and live glamorously to their own liking. The general style is a contrast to the typical pale geisha girl, and generally consist of a dark tan with bleached hair. Clothing/hairstyle depends on the type of gyaru. Main Subtypes of gyaru are:

B-Gal/B-Gyaru

Gyaru with influences from the hip-hop style

Hime Gyaru

Princess-like gyaru; very feminine. Based on rococo styles, consisting of light pink/pastel colors, laces, bows, poofy/elegant hair, tiaras.

(Not to be confused with Sweet lolita, which has more child-like appeal, less skin shown, and no tan)

Ganguro

Gyaru with a deeper tan and more dramatic makeup (most importantly, white makeup around the eyes). Lots of fashion accessories and bright colored clothing. Influences are thought to be from Californian/Hawaiian beach culture

Yamanba/Manba

Exaggerated version of ganguro. Very dark tan, dark foundation with distinct white makeup on nose/lips, very bright/vibrant clothing, muli-colored hair.

Kogal
Gyaru with outfits based on school uniforms: short skirts, loose socks, cardigans.

Decora

As opposed to Lolita and Gyaru (which makes a statement with their fashion), decora is simply about looking kawaii and having fun with fashion. Like a child playing dress-up, and piling everything on. Clothing starts with a plain shirt and hoodie (usually in pink) with tutu-like skirt. Then it's layers with tons of accessories and decorations from head to toe. It's thought to have emerged from young teens in harajuku coming together to show off their eclectic fashion and creativity.

Visual kei

Emerged from visual kei music scene. Consists of striking makeup, crazy hairstyles, flamboyant costumes and androgynous aesthetics. Influences are from glam rock. the fashion goes along with the VK music scene and compliments the overall artistic expression from it.

Oshare kei

Happier version of visual kei. Brighter colors, fun accessories, lots of mixing/matching patterns and colors.

I use to be obsessed with Japanese street fashion overall...and have tried Hime Gyaru, Kogal and Gothic/Classic Lolita, lol. But some of these trends seems to have faded, sadly. Here's a few of the newer trends I like (I don't know much about the origins of them though)...

Dolly Kei

Inspired by vintage and antique dolls, and also European fairy tales. Lots of patterns, mixing and layering. Focus on vintage, hand-made and unique pieces, and looking like an antique doll out of a medieval fairy tale.

Mori Girl
Clothing is soft with loosely fitted layers that has a casual earthy feel. Focus on hand-made/vintage items with natural aesthetics.

are they really common, i mean, do people in japan really wear them on a regular basis

like, they don't wear it for novelty but it's just how the fashion is there

just like skinny jeans for men or scene hair for girls in america

lol what do you think?

it's mostly for the weirdos people who want to make a statement

I found this drawing. They have yamanba, manba, kogal, b-gyaru, hime gyaru, and some other styles I've never heard of...

I absolutely love it! It inspires me sooo much<3

I loooooove hime gyaru ã… ã…  i aspire to be himekaji one day

I don't have enough confidence to fully dress up like them, but their fashion inspires me too. I often try toned down versions of it so it looks more casual, lol. Love hime gyaru and himkaji. Especially the hairstyles:

I've never seen Dolly Kei and Mori Girl before. They're pretty cool.

If i had to wear one out of all of them, it would probably be Mori Girl.

I haven't seen those before either. I think they are newer trends. There is also Cult Party kei, which is like dolly kei, but lighter in color.

Those 3 styles (Mori girl, cult party kei, dolly kei) look similar. All have layering of pieces and mixing patterns/fabrics...but mori is earthy tones, cult party is pastels, and dolly is deep bold colors:

Not common...maybe just among a niche group of people in harajuku/shibuya. But yep, some wear it walking around as their daily fashion:

But mostly, alot of the lolitas, VK cosplayers and decoras are kids who dress up for fun on the weekend. They gather at harajuku bridge every sunday to share their fashion with others and also to the tourists:

Does Ganguro still exist?

Probably not as prominent as in the late 90s and early 2000s. But I saw a blog about someone spotting a ganguro in 2011, so they still exist apparantly, however rare: http://tokyofashion.com/old-school-ganguro-alba-rosa-in-shibuya/

Japanese fashion is my absolute favourite! <333 I must have like, 5 different street style blogs bookmarked so I can always keep an eye out on what they're wearing. All the girls are incredibly trendy. Ughhhh I just want to live in Shibuya or Harajuku tbh.

Ahh, okay! If I had to pick one, I suppose it would be Gyaru. They got me into the whole deco side to fashion, and now I'm nail-crazy! Me and miss A's Min have the same Disney nails...♥

I have to say Mori Girl is my favorite out of all of these. The style is chill enough and something I could see myself wearing (even though it's a bit of a stretch).

I have to say I literally hate Yamanba/Manba. I saw it this past weekend in person and almost pissed myself I was so startled. But whatever floats their boat. #ShibuyaAtNight :._.:

  • 2 weeks later...

Lolita it's been always my favorite.

I won't wear those dresses because they're really too much for me, but they looks so pretty.

Also, Mori girl it's the only style I can relate to.

I love that vintage, comfy and flower/nature fashion.
