JWK 4,304
A Girl Group Era, Differences between 2015 Girl Groups Translated by: JWK @ Onehallyu.com This year, the market for girl groups will grow with continuous debuts, which foreshadows the new era. YG, JYP, Cube, Starship, WM, Jellyfish, etc. are preparing their spectacular girl groups by using the company’s own charms. Sonamoo was first to debut last year on December 29th, then GFriend, then CLC, then The Ark, then Oh My Girl. Just like their names, let’s see the differences of 2015 girl groups. #Sonamoo, going back and forth between girls hip-hop and innocence Sonamoo is a group produced by TS Entertainment with a lot of ambition. The members’ average trainee period was 4 years. Members views Sonamoo’s strengths as “We might look weak on the outside but showing strong performance and raps are our strengths.†Sonamoo mentioned “We’ll do hip-hop but we’ll show we’re capable of doing other genres as well.†They caught the public’s attention. Sonamoo’s debut album “Deja Vu†was ranked 1st on Gaon’s weekly chart from 12/28 ~ 1/3. Their MV was the most viewed in YinYueTai, China’s most popular video site, for the category “Korean music.†In two days, the MV reached more than 1 million views between Korea and China. You can’t forget about their foreign market. Sonamoo will perform at Music Matters 2015 in Singapore in May. Also the media will also attend, so there is interest if Sonamoo will become the new rising stars of the KPOP icon group. #GFriend, girl group that Billboard has an eye on Last January, with the release of their debut album (Season of Glass), GFriend threw their hats in the KPOP world, they made the public remember when SNSD first debuted by showing off their innocence and healthy charms. Music Video reached more than 1 million views in just 10 days, and ranked higher on the upper half on music charts and music shows so it was a stable debut. Even after 3 months, their debut song ‘Glass Bead’ continues to rank in the upper half on music charts and continuously receiving love. It is noteworthy to mention the press they’ve been getting in the foreign market. Billboard described GFriend as “Since SNSD debuted in 2007, they’ve been stably at the top KPOP girl group rank, GFriend makes people remember when SNSD first debuted with their sweet sound and nonstop choreography in ‘Glass Bead’ makes people remember ‘Into the New World’. A report from Reuters from the UK, focused on GFriend when they wrote a report on “Groups that have dreams of following Psy’s footsteps in the Hallyu Wave.†Their appearances on variety shows has been dazzling. Last March, Yerin appeared on ‘Running Man’ and showed off her own unique variety sense and dominated the real time search ranking on portal sites and became a hot issue. On this day, she became the fastest rookie to appear as guest on Running Man, showed off her strong random dance, and chicken dance and became a rising star in the variety world. On this day, it might have helped them expand their fan age groups. #CLC, Establishing their vocals with busking CLC is a group that debuted last March under Cube Entertianment. With success of Beast, 4Minute, and BTOB, Cube Entertainment has moved up in the ranks of entertainment industry has made their presence felt and listed on KOSDAQ. CLC’s main strengths are they’ve established their vocal skills with busking. Even before their debut, they busked in the streets of Seoul and Hongdae, to help children with disabilities. It wasn’t an one-time event, but with continuous training, CLC performed with various instruments like guitar, keyboard, percussion, etc. to show off their musical skills, and not just singing. CLC had a fansign just 10 days after debuting and proved they were a hot community with the public. Last March, they held a fansign in IFC Mall in Yeouido with fans of all sex and ages there, and with fans from Japan, China, member Sorn’s hometown Thailand, etc. showed CLC has a potential to become a “global girl group.†They’ve also caught attention in China. CLC’s debut song ‘Pepe’ was 2nd in real time charts in China’s biggest music site, QQ Music, and caught the attention of music fans. ‘Pepe’ music video reached 1 million views on March 28th, just 10 days after release. It proved CLC’s influence on the market. With Sorn and Jang Yee Eun, CLC can speak Thai, English, Chinese, etc. so there’s a potential of promoting overseas. #TheArk, Diverse colored, multicolored group The Ark has been receiving attention as Superstar K3’s Yuna Kim and SBS KPOP Star Season 2’s Jeon Minju are in the group. On the 13th, they were #1 on real time search rankings after taking a photo with popular group, EXO, and received more attention from the public. The Ark doesn’t stick to one concept, but rather a multicolored group that show various images. Using their character and abilities, every member will be able to tell their own stories. Rap, vocals, performance, etc. are their main strengths and with each member having their own colors, they have ambition of showing synergy. They got to perform two songs on MNET M Countdown, MBC Show Music Core, and SBS Inkigayo which is unusual for a group that just debuted. The Ark mentioned they’ll do other things in the future and not just music. Member Halla acted with actress Jo Min Soo in their debut song ‘The Light’ Members Minju and Jane, mentioned what they wanted to act in a sitcom in an interview with Tenasia. Yuna Kim mentioned she wanted to go on “Running Man†or “Happy Together†#OhMyGirl, From B1A4’s Sister Group to Everyone’s ‘My Girl’ Oh My Girl is rookie girl group from WM Entertainment, which has B1A4. Before their debut, they were known as “B1A4’s sister group†and has people curious about them. They debuted on the 20th with debut album ‘OH MY GIRL’ and title song ‘Cupid’, and on the same day held a showcase at AX Korea in Seoul. They performed ‘Cupid’, ‘Hot Summer Nights’, and ‘I Was Curious’ They revealed their ambition to become, “Everyone’s my girl†on this day. They showed off their talents by playing guitar and singing to the OST of ‘Once’, ‘Falling Slowly’ and singing acapella cover of Beyonce’s ‘Party’ People need to pay attention to individual member’s talents. First, Jiho can speak Japanese. “When I first got into the company, there were Japanese lessons. After taking lessons, I gained interest.†She introduced Oh My Girl using her fluent Japanese, and showed possibility of becoming a new generational Hallyu star. Rapper Mimi mentioned she took part in writing lyrics for ‘Hot Summer Nights’ and mentioned she’ll continuously take part in writing lyrics and composing. Lead vocal Seunghee showed off her outstanding vocals in the past, when she was on SBS Star King and MNET Superstar K2, and her guitar skills during the showcase when they performed ‘Falling Slowly’ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Netizen Comments via NB t/n: If there's a confusing part, let me know. I looked over it couple of times, and made it simple as possible but I'm one of the worst proofreader in the world. aegyolks 3,350
According to this, Sonamoo had the most impact? Correct me if I'm wrong. Nah.... maybe internationally, but their debut song didn't even chart on Melon. If we're basing it off sales, GFriend has had the most impact thus far (both their debut song and Yuju's collab are doing very well on the charts). 3
