Article: [Oh!ollywood] Bruce Jenner, first interview since sex change "I'm happy... but I'm not gay"

Source: OSEN via Naver

1. [+1,736, -31] Harisu said that she got a sex change because she liked men and identified as a woman.. Hong Suk Chun said he likes men but he identifies as a man, which makes him gay... And Bruce Jenner says that he identifies as a woman but doesn't like men...??? Such variety of reasons...

2. [+936, -52] Can't tell if that picture is before or after the sex change

3. [+702, -181] The comments here perfectly show Korea's level of understanding on this matter

4. [+783, -389] Wait, he wanted to be a woman but wasn't attracted to men? Isn't that weird?;;

5. [+105, -10] A transgender is different from being gay. A transgender like him just identifies as a woman and changes her body to fit that while a gay identifies as a man and likes men. They're different concepts but I guess a lot of people can't tell the difference.

6. [+95, -4] So putting it simply, he's a lesbian born in a man's body.

7. [+87, -6] Wow, didn't know there were cases like this. Identifies as a woman but doesn't like men... so he became a woman and likes women? ã…‹ã…‹ Daebak

8. [+56, -1] So would that make him a lesbian then?

9. [+56, -4] They're different concepts. Him being born a man and identifying as a woman has nothing to do with him being attracted to women.

Although for the second comment I'm not so sure since sex =/= gender

Finally let's take this time to appreciate this fitting song

Most of the comments about Bruce Jenner have shown the overall lack of understanding when it comes to transgender inidividuals and how they think and feel.

This is not what I was expecting. I came in here, prepared to see very rude comments. The netizens here just seem uneducated on the subject.

comments are better than expected, but still insensitive as hell..

Glad the comments weren't as hateful as i expected them to be.

gender =/= sexuality it's so important, the comments are not as bad as I thought they could be.

because it's not a korean celebrity

don't worry my friend... the comments on this site during and after the interview...were just as ..... dense.

I don't think enough people outside of South Korea understand transgenders either.

If i see one more comment about sexual orientation ... i might throw my laptop.

Why do people keep referring to Bruce as "him" when she has stated she is a woman and has already had her sex change.

Well he did say that people could use "him" and "he" because it's what he and others are used to, or something along those lines

this one got it right

3. [+702, -181] The comments here perfectly show Korea's level of understanding on this matter

but I think just like in the translated netizen comments, there are a few who got the point.

She/He is a woman, not attracted to men..therefore, yes, a lesbian. [ did he/she had a name change, or mentioned how he/she wants to be referred to as?]

SK needs to pay more attention and learn to deal with stuff like this because they have their own people. I can see your voice had a female contestant who went through a sex change from male to female. if homosexuals get the backslash they get, I don't even want to think how they might treat someone with a sex change

Why do people keep referring to Bruce as "him" when she has stated she is a woman and has already had her sex change.

tbf...because Bruce actually has left many people confused as to what pronouns to use.

Bruce to my knowledge has... not... had a sex change yet...

and in the interview... Bruce stated his preference for male pronouns for now... regardless of his declaration.

Bruce also said... the next interview he does he will not be "Bruce" ...but a woman w/ a name...I feel like then, calling Bruce he will be more of an issue. Until then, i don't think it matter much tbh. Especially since Bruce stated his preference.

GLAAD echoed that personal choice in a statement of its own, following the interview.

"At this time, Bruce Jenner has not requested that a new name or pronoun be used, therefore we are respecting his wishes and will continue to refer to Jenner by his current name and with male pronouns," the group said.

"Some transgender people prefer to change their name and/or pronoun quickly. Other transgender people may take more time to decide what name and/or pronoun feels right to them.

"To be respectful, use the name and/or pronoun requested by the individual."
