Difference between watch and see?

Recommended Posts

to watch is to look and pay attention to something because you're interested in it. e.g. you watch TV or watch the animals at the zoo

to see is for something to come into your sight that you weren't looking for. e.g. you see a bird fly by or see your friend at the mall

there are better answers if you google it

Ummm, damn that's a hard one. It's hard for me to explain but I can show some examples.

"I used to watch my sisters kids for her'

"I used to see my sisters kids for her"

"watch" here implies that the person was actively overseeing their sisters kids. "see" makes no sense as  "seeing" in this context is only visually seeing the kids with their eyes.

That's why you wouldn't say "watch you later" but instead you'd say "see you later".

And "see" can be used for understanding/realization.

"now I see why I was wrong"

"now I watch why I was wrong"

"see" is used to symbolize your realization.

"Now I watch..." isn't grammatically correct, and it implies... like sitting down to watch a tv show. So when you add "why I was wrong" it makes no sense at all.

But see and watch can be used interchangeably often

"we're going to go see a movie"

"we're going to go watch a movie"

"did you see that?"

"did you watch that?"

Yeah, it's an interesting question OP! Not something I've ever had to think about before.
