MAX whose name is an acronym for "Musical Active eXperience" is a Japanese female dance vocal group. The original members of MAX made their musical debut as members of the SUPER MONKEY'S along with lead vocalist Namie Amuro. They debuted on May 10th, 1995 and gained mainstream success with their 1996 single, "TORA TORA TORA." Their first album released the same year spent four weeks at #1 and sold over a million copies, earning them the title of Queens of J-Euro. Their lead singer, Mina, left the group in 2002 due to pregnancy and was replaced by Aki Maeda who assumed the stage name Aki. Aki left the group in August 2008 to pursue a solo career. Mina would return to the group months after Aki's departure, ushering in MAX's official comeback. In 2010, Reina went on maternity leave and MAX went on a musical hiatus. After 3 years, the group returned in 2013 with the Japanese gay anthem, "Tacata'."

 

Since their debut MAX has sold over 10 million records. In the mid-90s they were the most popular girl group second only to fellow Okinawan group, SPEED. As a group, MAX established a new style for female idol groups, straying away from the traditional cute and innocent idol mold instead focusing on high impact choreography and a sexier, more adult image. In 2015, the group celebrates their 20th anniversary.

Today is MAX's 20th anniversary! 

 

They celebrated with a fan club event for 600 fans which included activities, live concert, and talk with letters from Reina (member on maternity leave) and Aki (former member).

 

They also announced a brand new single!

 

"#SELFIE ~ONNA Now~" out on July 22nd, 2015.

It's actually not a cover. The songwriters' webpages indicate that it's an original song.

 

As for the new song, comments Nana made to the news media say that a new melody has been given to "SELFIE" so at least it won't be a straight cover.

omg there a thread for max ... the 1st japanese group that i supported since 97 ... waited so long for mina to comeback and she did .. but now it reina .. come back please .. reina .. been so long and they are still there .. i only hope i can get to watch another concert of their since the last 2009

Mina and Nana had a LINE LIVE broadcast for Valentines Day and announced a two-date tour to coincide with their 22nd anniversary. "MAX LIVE CONTACT 2017" will open in Tokyo on 5/6 with a second show in Osaka on 5/14. It has been confirmed that Reina is set to perform with the rest of MAX during the tour but it is has not been confirmed whether or not she is permanently returning to the group.
