K-pop is a tough, competitive stage where a myriad of new groups emerge each year. Behind the shiny glitter are years of toil, obscurity and perseverance.

So four years of full limelight isn’t a bad track record. ZE:A, four years after their debut, are relishing the moment with their mini-album “Illusion.â€

Nine young men sing earnestly to a feel-good melody. Their steps are light, and they seem to be totally enjoying the time on stage. Kevin, 25, Kwanghee, 25, Siwan, 24, Junyoung, 24, Taeheon, 24, Heecheol, 23, Minwoo, 22, Hyungsik, 21, and Dongjun, 21, comprise the K-pop group ZE:A.

ZE:A debuted in 2010 with the single “Nativityâ€along with the seven-member Infinite and the five-member Teen Top. ZE: A’s race to the top was relatively late compared to the Infinite members who are currently on tour, and have also been integrated into SM Entertainment, Korea’s leading entertainment agency. Teen Top has been rallying with its core fans and several hit songs.

K-pop group members actively appear on reality entertainment shows, talk shows and musicals largely after the group gains popularity, but in the case of ZE:A, several members came to the fore before the group. Kwanghee fast became popular with his fast and loud-talking persona, while the good looks of Siwan landed him roles in popular television dramas, while Dongjun became known as the “athletic†K-pop star.

Now with the album “Illusion†and the track “The Phantom of the Wind,†the group is finally coming to the fore. It helps that the song, with its mix of disco and dance, is composed by Sidekick, one of the most popular music writers in Korean pop at the moment.

“It feels different. Our leader Junyoung was sidelined with an injury for a long time, so it’s like two years and five months since we performed together as nine,†said Siwan. “So in that sense, it’s a very important and special album.â€

“The song Phantom of the Wind gets its motif from Phantom of the Opera but it is sung and interpreted in ZE:A’s way. Also, the 14-member orchestra and the tenor chorus add to the grandness for the song,†said Dongjun. “But most importantly, all nine members are singing and performing together.

“Everyone is carrying out their respective busy schedules. We are busy, but we’re totally enjoying it. We will also hold a concert in October,†said Junyoung.

“People ask us a lot about whether there is jealousy among the members because some are more well known than others, but as a group we’re grateful that some members are making a name for themselves as it means promoting the group ZE:A,†said Kevin.

“I am joking when I say on television that I feel jealous of Hyungsik becoming more popular. To be honest, it really feels good. People including fans now know more about ZE:A, and tell us that we’re really something. The other members also have their strengths, which the fans will get to see. I believe that all nine of us will succeed,†said Kwanghee.

Hyungsik has literally leapt to instant A-stardom with his role on the reality program “Real Men,†which has several celebrities experiencing compulsory military service and is aired on MBC. He is the latest among ZE:A members to be catapulted into the limelight, following Kwanghee, Siwan and Dongjun. Fellow member Kwanghee has jokingly mentioned that Park’s instant popularity has raised the fee for the entire group by double.

The ZE:A members are hoping that Phantom of the Wind will take them to the long-coveted No. 1 spot on the music charts.

The recent album has meant more demands for ZE: A on stage. They recently showed off their disco moves by performing their version of Donna Summers’ “Hot Stuff†— music their parents must have listen to.

“We related to the music, that’s what’s special about music. I hope that our songs will become long-running popular songs like those of Donna Summers,†said Minwoo.

Taeheon espoused that the music’s ability to connect people is what K-pop is doing for its lovers. “I am just grateful to be doing our music, or music that allows us to communicate with the world,†Taeheon.

Heecheol and Hyungsik said that they hope to stay as ZE:A a decade from now.

“I hope we can grow together like the group Shinwha, and have our own television show like they did. A ZE:A show, how about that? I think it’s possible,†said Heecheol.

“Sometimes they call us Kwanghee Group, Park Hyungsik Group or Lim Siwan Group. But watch us until we are called Kwanghee of ZE:A, Hyungsik of ZE:A,†said Hyungsik.

One of the nineties most recognizable K-pop groups R.ef and ZE:A collaborated on ‘Immortal Song 2’.

It’s been 15 years since R.ef’s Sung Dae Hyun last performed, and his collaboration with hoobaes ZE:A was his return to the stage. They sang R.ef’s hits “Heartbreak" and "Official Breakupâ€.

Nervous before the performance, Sung Dae Hyun stated, "I’m not sure why I’m here." Despite his worry, he and ZE:A won their round against Kim Yong Jin and 015B, but in the end, Hyun Jin Young, Moon Hee Jun, and Eun Ji Won took the final win.

ZE:A are always so wonderful on IS2 :ahmagah:

Kwanghee also commented on ZE:A's success on the charts. He complained, "We received songs from Brave Brothers and Duble Sidekick, but to be completely objective, I think they give us 2nd class tracks. They tell us that it's a hit, and then we can't contact them."

He added, "There still isn't a song that goes well with ZE:A. We don't have luck with songs... We're such a hot group, but it's hard to breathe when we're 80 on the charts."

Siwan also said, "Our direction isn't clear. I'm personally in a dilemma, and I'm unsure about the group. I think we need to have a concept like 'Aftermath', the first song that we made a hit."

That's pretty candid talk. Although it's true, it certainly doesn't inspire much confidence...

Did he just call The Ghost of Wind 2nd class?  :soul:

So I'm guessing it floppadeedooda'd.

I dunno, maybe. I was thinking more about Siwan's comment: their musical direction isn't clear.

In other news I heard that they will be releasing a Japanese version of Illusion later this year + new mv. I hope there will be some new songs

I was wondering if someone could pretty please tell me which episode this YouTube clip is from?

Which ZE:A reality show and what number episode? I tried looking on Youtube but couldn't find the answer. It's where Kevin talks to the girl in English and she picks him for a date.

Thanks! :derp:

lol I've never seen that show before. Is it just called ZE:A Go to America maybe? Judging from their haircuts it must be from around early 2010.

omg your avatar is really similar to mine, ha ha.

Hey, new ZE:As here!

Bias is Kevin and my favourite song so far is The Ghost of Wind :)

this place is really unlively for an artist thread

heyyyy welcome :) ... I'm trying to keep it alive lol

For Kevin, recently it was his first anniversary of being a radio dj, and there is an interview with him (in English) here. Also, Heechul and Dongjun visited the show for the anniversary episode:

FYI Hot Beat is an English program and it's on every night. Sometimes Kevin sings lol.

In other news, ZE:A are currently preparing for a Japan Tour called Nine Colors. The shows are on 29/4 and 1/5.

In other other news, Kevin, Hyungsik, Dongjun and Minwoo performed on tonight's episode of IS2 and won!!

Also didn't know Siwan was supposed to be in Triangle, maybe because we mostly hear about Jaejoong in it.
