Students are the university's customers.

So there were some argument in some forum regarding how it is considered rude to pack up before the professor has dismissed the class.

I don't get why this would be the cased if they are not distracting the class.

Students are customers. If the service provided by the university, and in this case the lecture isn't meeting the customer's expectation then wouldn't it be right for the student to leave?

What do you think?

I got suspended once for always skipping and sneaking out of my English class.

I couldnt sit through an hour everyday not doing a single shit. My professor basically just let us do nothing or he'd talk about crap not related to our English class. He was nice though and he understood since English has always been taught to us since elementary and he was sort of against the basicness of the pre-made lessons he was obliged to teach.

There was also this one time a student and these 2 koreans almost weren't allowed to march for graduation because they hadn't paid the full amount for the tuition and so a lot of the students protested.

I understand that what we pay is what we get but I've always thought that school shouldn't be one of those

My school is under priests and they treat education like absolute business. it makes me sick.

One of my lecturer has this simple rule "I'm here to teach you, you are here to learn. If you are not interested in my lesson, that is your choice. At the end of the day, it is your grades". I actually like this rule of hers. She is always willing to help you out or spend a few more hours with you after lesson time, if you want to learn more. You can call her anytime and ask if she's in the office, and she will gladly welcome you and teach you if you have any enquiries. At the same time, if there are any students that skip her class or sleep in her class, she doesn't say anything about it. If you skip, she would just advice you to attend since in my school you have to attend at least 75% of the lessons, or you will be debarred from taking the exams. I can never stay awake in lessons, and she totally doesn't care if I sleep. However, when the exams are near, I start finding her and asking questions left and right. She will of course say things like "This is what happens if you sleep in my class", and I would then reply in a joking way with "It's not your lesson, I just have a short attention span". But she still helps me anyways and still jokes around with me.

I personally think school system in regards to teachers and students is a give and take situation. Rather than a service and customer case (which isn't entirely wrong), I think it's important for both parties to understand one another. There are times you have to be strict and enforce the rules, but for students in higher education, it's okay for teaches/professors to be more lax. Students who intentionally skip or sleep in class know what they are doing.

If there's still like 5-10minutes left we always start packing... Some professors say "give me 2 more minutes and it's finished", while others usually say "it's not time yet" but the students don't care lol they do the same thing next class. I do find it a little bit rude since we're with 500 students and it's so noisy already so if everyone starts packing up you can't hear the professor anymore... Since you paid for those classes I guess it's smarter to listen until class is over and then packing up that's what I usually do ^^

In my university, you can't even pack up before the lecture is over because the professors explain until the very end and you really have to write everything down.

So it is only about students leaving in the middle of the lecture. It is rude, but it is not forbidden. IMO, it is just kind of unrespectful.

Just skipping lectures is okay and a lot of people do that. They just have to recover the lectures somehow...

In school, I'd say you shouldn't pack up before the end of the lesson. It is your duty to attend school after all.

uhm, in my uni it simply depends on the professor

but i disagree with you op. If a lecture or a class doesnt interest you and you think you could do more productive things with that time, you should have the right to skip it. But once you're there, do not disturb the other students.

If you really have to leave the class before its over because you have an appointment or you have to take the train, you can simply warn the professor before starting the class and sit next to the exit/door

Paying thousands a year to an institution? The student should be able to leave whenever they want. It's like paying for a movie, pack up and leave or come when you want, but if you're distracting other people from getting the most out of the service they paid for then absolutely you should be warned in some way. That being said, students pay a lot of money so they should be treated as customers. They should have the freedom of leaving/enter as long as it's not affecting what others are getting out of the service. That's my opinion.
