Wu Yifan's long speech at Sina 15th Anniversary

Hello everyone! I’m Wu Yi Fan, and I’m very nervous. I’m very thankful to Sina for giving me the Outstanding

Young Person award. I feel that I am not worthy enough for this title, and when I was tasked with giving a

speech I was initially against it because I was very nervous about presenting in front of so many seniors. But

Sina told me that today I could share some personal stories, so I’d like to share something which I have

experienced and am currently experiencing. This story begins a long time ago. When I was young, my dream

was to become a professional basketball player. Actually I was rather fortunate because of my height, and my

skills weren’t too bad either, so I always felt that this dream wasn’t too far off, it was something which could be

achieved as long as I worked hard.

For a very long period of time, I knew what it looked like at 4am in Vancouver, but fate does not always align

in the direction of your dreams. Before I reached 190cm I went for a bone test, I said that if I could grow to be

over 190cm I would play basketball professionally, and if I could not I would study, and the results showed

that the maximum I could grow to was 188cm.

When I was 18, by chance I entered the entertainment industry and began chasing another dream. When I

started out as a trainee in Korea, my mother was actually against it because she was very worried. I felt that

as an 18 year old male I should be independent, and I hoped that I could share my mother’s burdens. So I

resolutely went to Korea.

The Korean entertainment (training) system is very comprehensive but also very strict. I learnt a lot and

endured much hardship, and frequently missed home, especially during New Year’s and special occasions.

However these were nothing much compared to the many times I felt doubt, fear and uncertainty for the

future, which was what I thought was the hardest to withstand. The person who gave me the most

encouragement was my mother. She said, â€œSon, as long as you are tired, just come home. You don’t have to

be afraid, Mum will be waiting for you to come home.†These words were a huge source of strength for me,

instead of giving me a way to back out, they gave me a reason to keep going on. Much later after that I bid

farewell to Idol Wu Yi Fan, to become the Wu Yi Fan who is standing here.

I remember when I started working with directors Guan Hu and Feng Xiaogang I was extremely nervous. I

discovered later on while filming that they were both very willing to aid their juniors. Their method of coaching

me was not the tough and stern type, but rather, they were generous with their praise, telling me â€œThat’s quite

goodâ€, â€œnot badâ€, and I was able to continue working hard. I was very happy throughout the entire process, I

kept sneakily eating but I was also learning; and I hope that in the future I will be able to work with more

seniors, try out different roles, experience different lifestyles and have fun as an actor.

So from a basketball player, to an idol singer, up till a movie actor, all these identities are representations of

my dreams, and right now I believe more strongly in the significance of dreams. To me, dreams are a form of

promise and commitment - to myself, to my mother, and to every person who supports me. Thus I will work

even harder, to become a better me. Dreams are something which can enable people to, bit by bit, step by

step go forth, and give you power.

I believe that, as long as one works hard and has faith, everyone can become an outstanding youth in their

own eyes. I hope that everyone with dreams will work hard, because if you work hard you will not regret it.

It's a nice speech for sure.

Why would he let 2 centimetres stop him chasing his dream? Shorter players than that have had success, especially in professional leagues outside the U.S.

This is the translation from the video (the one above is just from the transcript Sina posted):

"For a long time, I knew what Vancouver looked like every day at 4AM, but fate never follows the path. When I was almost 190cm, I went for a bone age test. I said to my mother, if I surpass 190cm I will go play basketball professionally, if I don’t surpass it I will obediently go home and study. So the result from the bone age test was 188cm. I’m now 187cm. I even shrunk a centimeter. Later, because I injured my ankle from playing basketball and broke a bone so it was really easy to get hurt again, so I gave up the basketball career and gave up this dream. Later.. although my dream was over I still had to continue on with life."

So it was because of his (lack of) height and his injury.

Thanks, that makes more sense then.
