They could see Hallyu for what it was. TVXQ really did try to become ingrained in the Japanese music industry while pretty much everyone else was racing to Japan to cash in on a trend that TVXQ in large part birthed. Yeah, like I know on the Japanese side of the forum, some of our views on KPop are formed by the Japanese's view on it since we're taking that content in along with the stuff we're reading about Japanese acts.
