It's been a long time coming, but GEM has finally pissed off the wrong person.

Can someone translate? I always viewed GEM as a nice person, though.

Translation plz?

Basically, on I am a Singer, the production staff invited GEM to attend the final episode of season 3, but Gem said that she will only attend if she gets to sing a song from her new album. At first, the production staff agreed, but the managers of the other singers invited protested, and the pd of the show personally contacted GEM to ask if she could sing one of her previous OSTs instead, while GEM basically said take it or leave it to the pd. The pd then got pissed off and put out the weibo and invited A-lin instead, who accepted the invitation immediately. This is followed by other Hunantv staff (I don't know their actual roles) also putting out weibos regarding GEM's diva like behaviour on the season that she was on.

Now basically the chinese media is divided in how they are reported the incident, but fans of Hunantv basically demanded that Hunantv boycott GEM. They will probably blacklist her regardless anyway. You can't demands things in China as a celeb unless you are a senior in the industry, at least 15 years in your belt.

She is quite popular, but I feel that because of this, a lot of her casual fans will probably leave her, and her image will tank as well.

This will be kind of equivalent to Yewon's scandal in Korea, but GEM is kinda like Suju's korean status in China, so she will still be able to survive on her concerts alone.

I see. But why didn't the others allow her to sing a song from her new album?

None of the others sang their own songs. I watched the episode last night and the episode was more of a "covering other people's old songs" thing.

She basically wanted promotion for her new song and that's no-no, considering I am a Singer isn't that sort of place either.

Is she leaving 'I'm a singer'?

No, she was one of the first season contestants, and she got her current popularity off the show. In China, if you get something from someone, you have to give back, and in her case, considering all she needed to do was perform a 3 minute song, she was basically breaking all the unwritten rules of chinese etiquette.

Bit of a dramatic thread. She wont lose any of her endorsements and tons of everyday people have no idea about the controversy. Sure it was a bigger deal on weibo but it's not going to be the end of her career. She already has a huge solid fanbase that will support her and if she released tickets for a new concert in maninland today it would still sell like hot cakes and those same fans will put her new albums songs at the top of the chinese streaming charts in a few months too.

Like I said in her artist thread, her team should have handled it better but so could the director and I'm A Singer staff.

‘don;t change the song, we're changing/substituting you for another person, good night'

double check though, my chinese is basic af

Accurate, better wording would be "If you're not changing the song, then we're changing people! Good night!"

I've never really gotten into her music much. Tbh all of her attitude rumors turn me off even more from checking out her songs.
