How to choose the perfect red lipstick?

I've been wanting to own a red lipstick for the longest time and I decided to go for it recently. What I didn't know is that there are SO MANY shades of red. They all looked the same but upon closer inspection I found out that they are all distinct! >.<

Being the lipstick noob that I am I didn't know about blue undertones and coral undertones and whatnot...the only definition I had for the lipstick that I wanted is that it should be a 'brick red'. So yeah red with a little bit of brown and deep orange. Like brick red!

I purchased one despite the lack of variety because I really wanted to own one...its the Maybelline color sensational lipstick in Fatal Red...and...I didn't like it :(

A single swipe gives me a pink tone. And I hate pink! I had to do about four swipes each on upper and lower lip for the red to show as it is on the stick. But the thing is it gets really bold and in-your-face and I don't want that.

Do you ladies have any suggestions for me? I prefer matte lipsticks. Thanks in advance!~

I should also mention that this lipstick bleeds (must use a lip liner), settles into lines on the lips and smudges on glasses >.< The only thing good about the lipstick is the texture.

Idk if they have a store in your country, but a brand called Kiko is my absolute favorite!! All of their lipsticks are ideal (actually all of their products are great tbh)

I even have a matte lipstick from them and these usually dry out my lips but it doesn't happen with this one.. The actual color also looks like the one on the packaging so I appreciate it  :rlytearpls:

I really like the red in Kate Moss's Rimmel Line--Shade 01. It's definitely red, and seems to last a decent amount of time before I need to touch-up. The lipstick is more matte than it looks in pictures.

Wet n Wild's MegaLast line is also pretty good, and has won a few beauty awards. The colors are really saturated and seem to stay pretty well, especially if you use a lipstick brush.

I can attest the potency of Wet n Wild's liquid stuff. This is really red, and I don't break it out very often, but it lasts.

If you have warmer, yellow, olive undertones you should go for warm undertoned reds; orange-y reds basically.

And if you have cooler undertones, if your skin is more pink; then you go for blue undertoned red lips, the ones that are more pink-red.

Finding a brick-red can be a bit of a hassle because it's difficult to find one that isn't too orange, or too brown >_< And most "classic reds" have blue undertones in them. Especially in the drugstore.

Mac has a shade called Brick-O-la that is the perfect brick shade but I'm not sure of a drugstore dupe for that one... Or See Sheer from Mac if you're looking for something lighter but still a brick-y red...

Just about every bold lip color will bleed. You need to use lip liner or blot. I'd recommend lip liner, because it also helps with getting a cleaner edge.

If you've got green veins, you're a warm undertone. If they're blue, you're a cool undertone. If it's a mix, you're neutral, so you can wear any color you want.

You can go for Make Up Forever's Professional Paris in Rouge Artist Intense. I don't think you can buy it online, because I went to look for a picture, and it's not there. I picked it up at Sephora. That's more for people with cool undertones.

For a warm tone, there's Lancome's Absolute Rooge, but this isn't matte and it's unreasonably pricey.

For drugstore, there's Covergirl's lipsticks, but I don't really recommend them.
