Anonymous wondered, Okay, so, first of all, I want to say that I love and agree with most of your opinions regarding the Cassie/JYJ fandom. Especially your views on the YunJae couple. I've always disliked that pairing because it just seemed so manufactured and fake to me (plus, their fans annoy me so much, Jesus). However, I can't help but feel like it's the same for HoMin. I wanted to know what are your thoughts on this? How genuine are they? How much is manufactured? I hope I'm not bothering you. Thank you.

HOW TO WRITE ABOUT THIS IN AN ORGANIZED WAY.

I don’t want to sound too defensive or too dismissive so I’m sorry if I end up doing both:

Honestly—and I know this is super hypocritical—homin being a manufactured product never crossed my mind?? I mean, sure, there are photoshoots (EL! SOL!) where it’s obviously total fanservice, but I don’t ship homin because of fanservice.

 

I mean, I definitely appreciate fanservice, don’t get me wrong, but sometimes, it’s like an obnoxious punch in the face, especially when it comes to Japanese pandering. Japan still seems to want to promote them as a couple, which I secretly enjoy, NGL, but unlike jaechun, real homin—to me—is about subtlety.

 

The homin I ship is the quiet kind—the tiny glances and dark cheeks and THESE STUPID FINGERS:

 

 

Shoving 100 pictures of them posed suggestively down my throat isn’t going to make me ship it just like it didn’t make me ship yunjae.

And seriously, watch this gif a couple of times. Changmin is four seconds away from saying, “ITADAKIMASU~†and devouring Yunho:

 

 

I ship homin because Changmin stayed.

 

I ship it for a million stupid reasons but I guess I can see why there could be concerns about them being manufactured, post-split.

So let me try to talk my way through this without being a total dumbass.

I don’t think the homin level of fanservice is—or ever will be—reaching yunjae levels of fanservice and this is why:

 

Changmin.

Changmin is not Jaejoong. He doesn’t play along like Jaejoong did. Changmin’s an ass but he’s a genuine ass and for all his I don’t give a shit crap, on variety shows and during concerts and behind the scenes, he acts like Yunho is his.

 

Like, I can’t explain it in a coherent, cohesive way. Sometimes, there are just these brief scary flashes of mine—in whatever way you want to interpret that: him having a platonic brother complex or actually loving Yunho romantically.

 

So when Changmin does do fanservice, especially lately, he flips everything around because he can. That’s not something Jaejoong would have done. More importantly, it’s not something YUNHO would have allowed. It’s dumb and unhealthy, but Changmin is way too special  to Yunho and so their actual dynamics are slowly seeping into every aspect of the “homin couple†personae.

 

The fanservice we get is generally overly fluffy and while I do love that, I don’t think that’s what reality is like at all. Changmin said they fight like cats and dogs, and I TOTALLY BELIEVE HIM.

 

I think when they fight, their fights are brutal and never cute because Changmin’s got a bad mouth and he’s sharp and he can probably cut anyone down super quickly and easily hit where it hurts. Probably not even on purpose.

 

The fact that they stayed together through that is what makes me ship it, makes me think it’s genuine, makes me crazy.

 

With yunjae, it was always “sure, yeah, we’re, like, totally compatible and perfect for each other and super committed to our roles as mom and dad, etc.â€

With homin, it’s the fact that they’re complete opposites but they’ve ALWAYS clicked on a level where they just… I know how bad this sounds… owned each other.

 

Even early on, Changmin is glued to Yunho and Yunho is overprotective:

 

 

and then the split happened and instead of looking broken, they have entire adorable conversations without SAYING ANYTHING, OH MY GOD:

 

 

And seriously, I’ll be completely frank here, what seals the deal for me is that SM Ent was going to add new members after JYJ left.

And Yunho and Changmin said no.

 

Like, nah, thanks, but we’re good enough, just the two of us, we can do this, we’re enough, together.

 

To have so much trust and faith and confidence in each other…

That’s not… ugh.

Those are choices.

That’s love.

Nobody can manufacture that.
