How do you prepare for an exam?

I had my exams 2 weeks ago and got my results back and i didnt like it.

I feel like it was because of how i prepare for my exams and the fact that i just try and get everything in my head.

What are ways you study especially with subjects/units that contain a lot of content?

I memorise everything you need to know for the exam, haha.

Instead of just cramming everything the night before (I did that last year and I felt like I was drowning under stress), set aside chunks of time everyday to revise over new material. It may help to make notes in dot-point form (so it's easier to remember) and I recommend making notes as the teacher teaches.

I cram even though I care so much about my grades. Haha, I got bad study habits. Working on improving them though.

I review my notes several times but if I have to study a textbook, I write down the important parts and memorize them.

Also , I always record the prof/teacher's voice at the class and at times I listen to them if I had a problem. It was useful specially before some finals (math exam to be exact)

i have my middle test this and next week. usually i just studying a nigh before the test lol. if the subject is science like chemistry/phyiscs and math etc its better to have practice question solving (?) rather than just reading the theory and everything imo. if it the one that need to memorize... im just reading the material lol give it sometime and you will memorize it!

I have trouble absorbing information right away. I read the material before class, take notes during class, then read over the material again. You're only doing it right when you have questions for your instructor during the lecture rather than staying kinda absent-minded and telling yourself you should study when class is over.

Even if you feel like you don't have the energy for it, try it once and you'll realize that what you just studied, you'll remember forever. All I need to prepare when exams start coming in is just a practice test and skimming through what I already studied. It's an investment, but thinking about how much time I've saved compared to high school makes it so worth it.

For subjects like history and social studies, we need to memorise stuff so i plan which day and time im going to write notes on and what chapters im going to study on

For maths, u need to practice it fervently so u can get good grades for it

For sciences, memorise the facts and do some practice questions to strengthen ur understanding

For math its really  hard for me to memorise equations as well which is really annoying.

this reminds me josh I did my ancient exam this morning :omg:

How'd you go??

Do you use sticky notes as well?

idk i try to do my notes before hand as well

then i try and type them all up 2 days before then the day before i try and memorise all of them

though it's still hard

I'm the type who doesn't make schedules, reminders or anything, haha. I don't use sticky notes - when the teacher is teaching something, I just make sure to write it down in my exercise book. Then, I convert them to MS Word so I can memorise them.

You should definitely do notes as soon as possible. That way, you can start memorising efficiently way before exams.

I'm trying to get into that habit. Cramming is torturous; I don't know how people can do it. My notes aren't really notes - they're usually 10+ pages long with everything I need to know for the exam so if I cram, it's not going to work.

I agree with the other users too - for maths, science and the alike, do practice and textbook questions. You can remember the equations/theories easier that way and learn how to apply them to problems in the exams.

Do you know if you're an audio, visual or kinesthetic learner? I'm a kinesthetic learner, so when I'm memorising something, I need to articulate it aloud and pace around the room. If you're a visual learner, I think it'll be good to write up sticky notes and things like that so you won't forget what you need to memorise.

My reply is so long, sorry. :._.:

Most of the stuff I do these days is memory based and any problem solving is built on memorized stuff. Consolidate notes after the lecture within 48-72hrs. Categorize topics as they are complete. When you get to study week or the week or two before make the notes more streamlined by cutting out extra words or things you are confident at remembering. Rearranging the wording to make notes shorter and more streamlined is a bit more active thinking than just re-reading/copying. Repeat this as many times as time allows you. It also means that your pile of notes has become thinner and filled with what you are struggling more with rather than a bit of everything.

If you can get practice questions answer as many as you can. Check answers either by referring to notes and/or getting together with a friend to see how you answered the same question.
