Chansung (2PM)

It’s a work that examines the difficulty of expressing feelings without words.

Chansung, a member of 2PM, Asia’s No.1 Beast Idol. In the midst of activities as a singer, he has also been active as an actor in dramas such as “Unstoppable High Kickâ€, Kaito Royale“, and "7th Grade Civil Servantâ€. But now, he has selected his first lead role in a Japanese movie to be “Wasureyukiâ€! This film was adapted from the pure love novel “Wasureyukiâ€, an original work by Shindo Fuyuki and is a best selling “pure love trilogyâ€, which has sold an accumulated 700,000 copies.

In the film, Chansung acts the role of a veterinarian, Yoon Tae Oh. Chansung, who arrived in Japan to attend the private showing in commemoration of the completion of “Wasureyuki†held in fall before it opens to the public, talked to us about the troubles he had with his Japanese lines, the worries he had about his method of expression, and his wish for “Wasureyukiâ€.

I felt charmed by the side of the character who wholeheartedly continues to think about one woman.

— Chansung, you have achieved your first lead role in a Japanese movie, but how was the filming?

I was a bit nervous. My previous Japanese work was around 3 or 4 years prior… when I acted in the late night drama “Kaito Royaleâ€. But this time, I was the lead role. I have yet to act out a main role in Korea and since all of the lines were in Japanese, I was most concerned with those points and I was a little worried. Since I played the role of a veterinarian, there was a lot of difficult vocabulary. Like “examination roomâ€. I can hardly do it even now, though. (laugh) Vocabulary such as that was difficult.

— When you first read the script, what part had you captivated and made you want to try acting it out?

It’s a character that had a side to him that thought about one woman and was able to constantly hold feelings for her for 7 years. I felt charmed by that.

— Tae Oh is a person who sympathizes with animals, but in what way are you similar, and in what way are you different?

Tae Oh is a person who treasured and cared for animals so much that he became a veterinarian. I love animals as much too, but I work as an actor. (laugh) That’s what is different. (laugh)

— You own a cat named Jeonggam, right?

He’s mine, but he lives at my parents’ house now. Though I wish I could have pets, I don’t spend enough time at home, so I think I would make the animals lonely and that’s why I don’t own any at this time. When it comes to animals, I like cats, but I also like dogs. (laugh)

— What is your impression of Ono Ito-san, whom you worked with?

She’s a bright person. It was nice to watch how she faced the future and worked hard on her acting. In addition, she also has a shy and pure side, that when certain situations were placed on her, she seemed quite embarrassed and gave off more of a shy vibe.

— In the first half of the film, I thought you didn’t have many lines since you said little and seemed to have a mature personality, but I thought you would therefore have to pay a lot of attention to facial expressions and movements. What would you say was easy to act and what was difficult?

Since my role was a veterinarian, wouldn’t a veterinarian have certain behaviors that would become a daily habit? I worried about how I should express that. Since I don’t have many lines in the first half, I was limited to only being able to express myself through facial expressions and movements. Therefore, I thought that it would have been easier if I reversely had more lines. If I had lines I would be able to explain while expressing what I want to say with words, but since I didn’t have lines, I had to use methods of expression other than words. I felt the difficulty of how to express “I feel like such and such†through this movie.

— Was the director, Han Sang Hee, the type to be scrupulous when talking about acting? Or was he the type to leave it completely up to you?

Before filming, I talked with the director many times. We talked about what kind of person Tae Oh should come off as, and I also told him my ideas. “In the circumstances surrounding this scenario, Tae Oh says this, but doesn’t he say this here?†“Shouldn’t I express it like this?†I told him my opinions and we came to a halfway understanding between the Tae Oh I envisioned and the Tae Oh the director envisioned. After the filming began, we both understood what kind of character Tae Oh was as a person, so even though the schedule was super tight, when I said, “I’m going to behave in this way for this situation, so I think I should say it like thisâ€, the director as well said, “Sure. The way you’re thinking is correctâ€, and he left it up to me.

— Was there a difference between Japanese and Korean film sites?

If a lot of time were given, I think there wouldn’t have been any differences between the locations for “Wasureyuki†filmed in Japan and the film sites for movies I have thus far appeared in. However, since the schedule was so tight that it felt like time was chasing us, I thought the hard filming schedule made it similar to a film site for a Korean drama.

— The members said it’s amazing that you have a lead male role in a Japanese movie. Did they give you any advice?

They didn’t give me any advice in particular. (laugh) All the members knew I was going to Japan to film and they told me something like, “You got the lead role, congrats.†After filming ended, they said “Good job†and “How did it go?â€

— What would make a wish come true if were to make a wish for “Wasureyuki (first day of snow)

If I were to make a wish when the first snow falls, it would be similar to looking up at the night’s sky and having the wish come true after seeing a shooting star. If I were put in that situation, the wish I would be praying for would be my health and for peace in the family. However, since I’m always thinking about those things, if I were to wish for something that could really come true… hmm… I want to travel with just the members of 2PM. I want to go to LA, Thailand, and Europe.

— It would be nice if you could go.

That’s right. I would be happy if it came true, since I think it would be fun for the 6 of us to travel.

"The showing of Wasureyuki in Cinemart Shinjuku has been extended to its 4th week until next week!! It's because a lot of people are watching it ♡ I'm pretty sure it's because the atmosphere of the movie is good and Chansung's acting was great. I hope a lot more people would watch it."

[MOVIE] I WANNA HOLD YOUR HAND

Chansung's 1st appearance on a Chinese movie as G.O/Ji-Oh, a trouble maker in his team, as though he has great talent in composition, he is very proud and off-the-wall.

The movie is a collaborative film/project between JYP Pictures and China East Entertainment Group.
