[NB]Too much English in Kpop lyrics?

Recommended Posts

Article: Why are there so many English lyrics in Korean songs?

Source: Segye Ilbo via Naver

Article talks about how there are too many random English words being thrown around in K-Pop lyrics, with some lyrics even being criticized by international fans for their awkwardness. Composers/lyricists argue that sometimes English words are easier to use when fitting them into beats and they just "sound cooler".

Another music critic added that lyrics are less important today since K-Pop is all about performance style and putting 'fast food/instant' music out as fast as possible.

1. [+971, -8] If they're going to use English at all, they should use real English you'd hear in an actual song. Instead, it's always random words like 'man', 'girl', 'you', 'baby', 'come on'... Meaningless words that only lower the quality of the song.

2. [+946, -20] Worst has to be T-ara's "to the Jun Won Il Gi".. Not that I'm an English expert but what the hell kind of grammar is that?

3. [+723, -19] Everyone, don't forget that this is Korea... Ridiculous that singers with meaningless lyrics are ranking at the top.

4. [+666, -43] Using so much English is a problem but what's more problematic is when artists from YG, for example, use proper grammar but mess up their pronunciation...

5. [+546, -6] Anyone who didn't know anything about K-Pop would think English is our official language and Korean is just an extra

6. [+521, -5] Songs really piss me off when they spam words like come on, baby, etc.

7. [+461, -5] It's ironic how K-Pop stands for Korean Pop... but the majority of Koreans don't like K-Pop.

8. [+409, -3] The only English used in K-Pop songs are on the level of elementary school grammar ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹

9. [+374, -3] Imagine how hard foreigners laugh when they listen to our songs ã…‹ã…‹ I don't care about the use of English, just make sure to double check grammar and not add it in so randomly

10. [+374, -3] The important thing to note is that the English lyrics never fit in the context of the song. They're just filler words.

11. [+369, -6] My school's English teacher burst out laughing when she heard a K-Pop song, asking what kind of lyrics are that

12. [+160, -1] What I hate the most are lyrics that are in Korean with one or two words switched out in English. What's the point of that? Just pick one or the other.

True.

Some are just so cringe-worthy yet hilarious at the same time.

I wonder how idols like Tiffany or Jessica feel singing meaningless english words in so many of their songs

I find it awkward when I hear some idols sing/speak English in a song.

The mispronunciation doesn't really bother me at all, it can be charming. It's worse if the grammar is wrong, then it kinda sounds stupid.

I most of the times don't even know there's English in a song until I look up the lyrics to see they're using English words ._.

it's still funny though, makes you remember a song
