that's why Jonghyun ordered a tailor-made male hanbok

i guess they're going back to the time when the pact between human and vampire was made. i guess their fate linked since then

lol, Im still confused.

Someone in AOA thread said the plan for those 3 seasons could be changed, depends on the rating, etc.

Bcus if they add a story of Joseon era, I think the current actors wont be involved at all. Mari and Han Shi Hoo's age supposed to be really 18, I dont think they have live since Joseon era, which means theyre already 200-400 years old.

But theres no information about the actors for that Joseon era, so maybe they already changed the plan? Or it could be just an unconfirmed rumor, or maybe it will take only 1-2 episodes so they dont think its necessary to introduce the actors earlier. I dont know, lol

they could get the same actors portraying different characters in different setting

oh, yes it might be possible.

It will be interesting to see Jonghyun or Seolhyun in historic era, lol

does anyone know what are decent ratings for a drama on that timeslot? bc i cant imagine they get really high ratings so late on a friday

Im not sure, but maybe 5% is already decent? Because currently MBC and SBS dont air a drama on that timeslot, they air a variety show instead: I Live Alone, and Burning Youth. I think maybe that timeslot is really bad for a drama? Especially because OM supposed to target teenage audience, while the variety show from MBC and SBS could be for older audience. I just hope the rating will keep increasing for next episodes

KBS2 drama Orange Marmalade had its premiere airing on May 15th, and unfortunately, its ratings were not as high as expected.

According to Nielsen Korea on the 16th, the first and second episode of the drama reached 4.2% and 3.3% respectively for an average

Orange Marmalade is about a love story between a vampire and human, AOA‘s Seolhyun playing the vampire Baek Ma Ri and actor Yeo Jin Goo as the human who hates vampires, Jung Jae Min. The drama is also based off a popular manhwa, or Korean comics.

In the same time slot, MBC‘s I Live Alone took first place with 9.4% and SBS‘ Burning Youth recorded at 5.1%.

Despite the poor ratings, netizens shared their appreciation for the drama over Producers which also had its premiere pilot on the same day.

Orange Marmalade: A Sweet Taste

Posted on May 17, 2015by picadrama

catch.jpg?w=317&h=444

While the rabid Twilight era put me off most vampire stories/movies, fortunately, Orange Marmalade runs in a different vein. What I had expected when I decided to open up episode 1 was a light fluffy romance between human and vampire, much like Hi!School-Love On (angel and human). While I did get my fluffy teenage blossoming romance, there is something about the drama gives it a dark twinge as it features vampires who are treated like second class citizens.

The story itself tells of a high school boy, Jung Jae Min, who is popular at school and musically gifted with the guitar. However, he seems to have a hatred against vampires, propagated by the fact that his mother married one. I am not sure what happened to his biological father, but perhaps that had something to do with his uneasiness with vampires? He had even quit his guitar playing due to past traumas. He refuses to acknowledge his mother or his new father who is also a teacher at his school.

One day, Jae Min unwittingly falls in love with a girl that he runs into on the subway to school. Ma Ri is a vampire girl, who grew up being ostracized and called a monster by her follow peers. She just transferred to Jae Min’s school in hopes to be not discovered again. Her family is a cute vampy family who by all means act and live like normal humans albeit with sun protection vaccinations and meals made of animal blood disguised as tomato juice. For Ma Ri, somehow Jae Min’s blood or just human blood smells especially sweet to her. She even nuzzles and kisses his neck in her trance by accident because she smelled his blood. Slowly, Jae Min gets a crush on Ma Ri and vows to find out more about her. He finds out that she is an excellent musician and has a beautiful voice. He decides to joint he school band if she is vocalist.

However, Ma Ri is not really about getting to know Jae Min and just wants to get by school without being discovered. Jae Min is not about to let Ma Ri slip through his hands. Meanwhile, Ma Ri’s childhood vampire friend transfers into the same school and he obviously has some feelings for her as he flirts with her relentlessly. Of course Jae Min is jealous at how close they are and little does he know that the friend, Shi Hoo, is his brother (new husband’s son). Shi Hoo does not care much about integration and wants equal rights for vampires, even thinking that he is the superior race because of his abilities. Society is torn about the integration and fear as well as ostracize vampires whenever they can.

So I am not sure in what direction this drama is heading. At one point, I was getting a whiff of Monstar, that musical-like drama with Junghyung of BEAST and vocalist Ha Yeon-Soo. On the other hand, crazy-eyed Shi Hoo who doesn’t really care about humans and has a grudge wants to pull the drama towards a darker direction. I guess this depends on Jae Min’s decision as he learns more about vampires and that band of his. For me, what drew me to this drama initially is Yeo Jin Gu. A child actor, gosh making me feel really old, who has several dramas under his belt and far more mature in his acting than people twice his age. As I have noticed from his previous works, he definitely does the angsty and hidden trauma angle very well.

For Jonghyun who plays Shi Hoo, he is that delightful rebel charmer that every girl falls for. His physical features really fit this vampire role as he has delicate features, but belies a hidden strength. His acting of a crazy vampire in the beginning really surprised me and I look forward to this darker side of his personality. Either way, this webtoon turned drama has captured my attention for now!

Yeah

You guys know Seolhyun is older than this actor by two years right?

yea haha. She still looks like 18 tho. And also, Yeo Jin Goo's mature aura make it looks like Seolhyun is not older than him

'Orange Marmalade' Yeo Jin-goo is drawn to Seolhyun for no reason

photo593818.jpg

It must be the beginning of the romance when Yeo Jin-goo was drawn to Seolhyun for no reason.

On the first episode of KBS 2TV's 'Orange Marmalade', Jeong Jaemin (Yeo Jin-goo) felt he was drawn to the new student, Baek Ma-ri (Seolhyun), who transferred from another school, and he could not stop staring at her for no reason.

The two had encountered once already on their way to school.

Baek Ma-ri was assigned to Jeong Jaemin's class. She decided to keep it in low key in order to stay unnoticed so she could graduate without having her vampire identity to be revealed, However, Jeong Jaemin, who felt the inexplicable feeling towards Baek Ma-ri, started following her.

As the utmost popular boy, eomchina, Jeong Jaemin at the school started showing interest to Baek Ma-ri, whom no one paid attention to, it could be possibly the beginning of the romance.

Hmm, I just want to say, as I've read the webtoon until the end, at first I was also not sure if the drama could deliver as good as the webtoon. But now, I can even say the drama is even better than the webtoon.

That scene when Jaemin couldnt stop staring at Mari, is my favorite scene from episode 1. That was also the first time I felt like "Ok. This is an amazing drama for sure!" Why? Hmm, its kinda hard to describe it. Lets just say, even tho Jaemin was only staring at Mari, but somehow I could exactly feel their emotions, both of them. The piano BGM also helping so much to transfer their emotions to viewers.

At first, the tempo of the piano BGM is quite fast, and you get the feel of 'fluffy teenage blossoming romance' just like that reviewer said. But then, when Jaemin couldnt stop staring at Mari, the piano BGM slowed down and slowly transferred the emotions of the 2 characters to me. Mari, who doesnt have a choice but avoiding everyone during break time, because its harder to hide her identity if she got a close friend. Music is her only 'safe haven', something that could make her forget the reality. You see, she was forcing a smile during that scene. And Jaemin, for sure, the only thing on his mind was definitely "Why that girl chose to be alone? In a place where no one could find her?" They didnt do anything but its such a beautiful scene for me, lol.

Haha, seems like I become more melancholy because of this drama :derp:

I felt the staring part was too long. i was like 'next scene please, why did you include shot of a wood in the middle of staring' :derp:

there is Mari's shadow on that wood, lol. Symbolic stuff

lol i can't understand that :derp:

haha. Anyway its mainly the piano BGM which gives the feel. Props to the production team for adding a very fitting BGM for each scenes. I felt like this drama is truly a real life manhwa/anime. Best manhwa/manga adaptation that I've seen so far

Dang I loved the second Episode.!!!

UGH

I hope it stays this good.

And I still want Baek Ma Ri to take a bite of Jaemin's neck

I might as well add this here....

I hope the main character dude in Oragne Marmalade offers his neck to Seolhyun so she can feast open him for sustenance

I don't know I just think it would be really hot.

This scene ( when Seolhyun is about to suck his neck)

tumblr_nogrz9PjGK1thpvfwo9_400.gif SHe really shoulda taking a big CHUNK of that neck meat a bitten down hard. Breaking then skin and causing the blood to flow violently into her mouth.

would have been so much hotter if she took a big chunk when she bit in and broke the skin causing the blood to flow.

Do you think he will offer his blood to Ma Ri at some point in the drama since she gets weak without blood???

:imstupid:

I dont know, lol

I'll gladly give my neck to Seolhyun tho :derp:

First Impression: Orange Marmalade

Posted on May 19, 2015 by Sab

I’m a vampire buff, so I volunteered to review Orange, while kooriyuki (with her more expansive kdrama/variety watch list) handles Producers. While the title may seem a little strange for a vampire-high school story, the concepts are familiar.

om2.jpg?w=560&h=374

Main cast:

  • Yeo Jin-gu (from The Moon Embracing the Sun) as Jung Jae-min. The typical high school’s Mr Popular cum Heart throb — not only is he booksmart, he also has to be good looking and has strong musical talent to boot…plus, he’s sporty, and the class’ monitor. (i hate him already) He meets vampiress, Baek Ma-ri, by accident (literally) on her first day to school, and proceeds to have a super, heavy, massive, extreme crush on her. (sorry for all the superlatives, but I consider a guy who stands for hours baking in the sun making moony eyes at a girl kinda funny) On a darker side though, Jae-min appears to loathe vampires, and belongs to the camp who prefers to have vampires eradicated. He’s also estranged from his mum, Kang Min-ha, cos she married his high school teacher (younger than her by years), Han Yoon-jae.
  • Seol-hyun (AOA member) as Baek Ma-ri. A vampiress by birth, she hates her “special†status, cos humans ostracise her types since Day 1. She switches high school (yet again) to Hope High School (bleah on the name!), hoping (sorry, bad pun) to graduate finally without incidents. Like Jae-min, she has strong musical talent — can play the guitar and the keyboard — and works part time at her mum’s cafe as a performer. Due to her need to be invisible, she keeps to herself most of the time, inciting an air of mystery about her — which our male lead falls head over heels for.
  • Lee Jong-hyun (from A Gentleman’s Dignity) as Han Shi-hoo. Also a transfer student like Ma-ri, and also a vampire. However, he isn’t that cautious about his status — in fact, he has been giving underground interviews opposing the so-called human-vampire treaty. He appears in Hope High only from ep2, and quickly wins Ma-ri’s friendship (cos duh, they are the same species)…and obviously plays the interesting 3rd leg of the love triangle.
  • Gil Eun-hye as Jo Ah-ra. Rich little girl (read: BULLYING BITCH) in the class. She has a crush on Jae-min, and isn’t too happy that he likes Ma-ri, which results in (yawn) those irrational behaviours that 2nd female leads delight in.
  • Ahn Kil-kang and Yun Ye-hee play Ma-ri’s parents, Baek Seung-hoon and Song Sun-hwa. Papa and Mama Vampire have no issues integrating with humans, they operate a cozy little cafe, and Papa Baek spends his time sealing “tomato†juices (read: blood stored in juice packs) for the family’s meals.
  • Song Jong-ho and Lee Il-hwa play Jae-min’s step father cum teacher, Han Yoon-jae, and mum, Kang Min-ha, respectively. Jae-min disapproves their relationship, and decides to estrange himself from his mum after her second marriage. (we are not sure if this liaison is also the root for his vampire hatred at the moment…unless Teacher/Stepdad Han is also a vampire?)

Synopsis:

Background of Orange talks about the underlying tension between the 2 species — the vampires and humans. Even though they have apparently work out an understanding many centuries back (as far as Joseun era): as long as the vampires do not drink human blood, they are ok to hang around humans and supposedly will be granted the same human rights. A oxymoron really, as Jae-min points out in class — vampires are not “humansâ€, so those rights of a human should not be applied to them.

om8.jpg?w=560&h=374

Of course, where there are human opposers to the vampire species, there are also vampires who abhore the so-called “agreementâ€. Some of them point out that vampires are superior beings (they are stronger, faster, and ageless)…so why must they be subjected to living as invisibly as possible? And when humans find out that their neighbours/ friends are vampires, the vampires end up on the losing end — they are not only ostracised, but any slight transgression brings about heavy repurcussions.

om6.jpg?w=560&h=374

It is with this background that Ma-ri operates — she has never stayed in any schools for long. The moment her classmates discover her identity, she runs. Her parents have to uproot themselves from their neighbourhoods and move as well. Thus, Ma-ri tries to be as quiet and as invisible as a mouse in Hope High. Unfortunately, a molester vampire crashes any chance of an invisible entry on Day 1, as she was caught on video to be on the same train as the molester vampire. Jae-min is also on the train and recognises Ma-ri when she is introduced to the class.

om3.jpg?w=560&h=374

Hilariously, while Jae-min is obviously smitten with Ma-ri — much to Ah-ra’s annoyance — Ma-ri can’t remember who the hell is Jae-min. Poor boy has his ego trodden to the grounds when Ma-ri is curt and unfriendly towards his advances. But like all kdrama male leads, Jae-min decides that annoying the female lead far enough will eventually lead to somewhere, thus, he insists that Ma-ri “apologises to himâ€. But in order for Ma-ri to know what she is apologising for, she muz “think back†to what she has “doneâ€, namely, ran off when Jae-min asked if she is alright during the first meeting, and later on, falling asleep on his shoulder (and necking him) on the train. (though the 2nd incident happened when Ma-ri was dreaming she was drinking human blood)

Enter Shi-hoo in ep2, as another transfer student, whose good looks sends the female population of Hope High in a tizzy. Shi-hoo immediately recognises his brethren and the two become fast friends — much to Jae-min’s chagrin and annoyance.

Review:

The show is cute. As cute as its rather nonsensical name — why call a vampire show a bread spread?? (and it keeps reminding me of Cha Seung-won aka Chajumma and 3 Meals a Day: Fishing Village). The introduction of a rather interesting twist on the main players by having 2 out of 3 of them as vampires spices up the rather old (and boring) high school romance genre. In terms of deliverance, the young actors and actress manage — although I find Seol-hyun a little stiff. But it’s ok, she’s playing a shy and I’m-trying-to-be-the-wallpaper! vampiress — so her blank expressions suit that role. (and i’m not being catty)

om1.jpg?w=560&h=369

The background of Orange works for these newbie actors/actresses though. Orange kinda reminds me of Dream High as well, cos there’s also bouts of singing and music. Suits the loads of nice, young, fresh blood in the show…and here i am sounding like an ahjumma vampiress myself.

The premise where Orange‘s story unfolds promises to be very interesting — like BloodOrange‘s vampires, like Ji-sang, try to restrain their abilities and act like humans as far as possible. Even though they are far superior in terms of strength, intelligence, blahblah than your average homo sapien. It’s kinda unfair from the vampires’ pov, but as a human, you are scared of things that are different and which you can’t understand. So for the humans to actually agree to living peacefully with a rather dangerous species, that’s already a (small) step in the right direction.

om4.jpg?w=560&h=374

Anyway, I’m juz waiting for Jae-min to discover that his love interest belongs to a species he hates to the core. I’m more invested to how he will react, after all the moony eyes he made at Ma-ri in eps1/2. Made even more complicated when his rival is anti-human. Plus I’m dying to know why Jae-min dislikes vampires so much.

I love how he/she review it. He/she understand the setting and characters perfectly :ahmagah:

---------------------------------

It’s been a while since I saw a first episode that gave me actual tingly shivers, in terms of feeling like this one is going to be special. But Orange Marmalade has me all tingly, and I’m loving every minute of it. This first episode was very strong, though it mostly focused on setup and character introductions and very little on plot. I still don’t have much of an idea of what the story will be, other than that vampires and people don’t get along and it’s probably going to come to a head at some point, but I almost don’t even care what direction the show plans to go with that. The setup was so good, that I’m pretty much down for wherever the show wants to take us.

I’m especially impressed with how easily the show flows from one mood and subject to the next, but I never feel jarred or like a scene is out of place. The transitions from cute high school problems to larger social issues, and back again, are smooth and natural and neither takes away from the other, or makes either one feel trivial or fake. It feels very real, in fact, the way the universe we’re being introduced to seems so calm and respectable on the surface, yet below the surface roils a hotbed of unrest and social exclusion that seems to be several centuries in the making. And yet the whole show has a dreamy, almost sleepy quality that reminds me that we’re not in the same universe that we live in now, and that things are very much different here. It’s a constant reminder not to get too complacent in thinking that we can predict what may happen, because this isn’t reality, and anything goes. I can see this going very dark very easily, but the lighter moments are so sweet and cute that I hope it keeps up that balance between the two as we go forward.

OM1-00047.jpg

The characters are fascinating and endearing, and even after one episode I find myself loving them and worrying about them all at once. The show seems to be setting up our two male leads as representatives of each side of the human-vampire conflict, with Jae-min being the human who just wants the vampires gone, and Shi-hoo as the vampire who only wants to be accepted as an equal and not an animal. Jae-min seems to have a lot of anger below that popular-boy exterior, and whatever it is that he’s so tortured about, he blames squarely on the vampires. And even though Shi-hoo as a character was only barely touched-upon, he made a very strong impression. He’s clearly had about all he can stand of the injustice, and the way that humans pretend to be accepting of vampires while at the same time vilifying and “othering†them. Honestly, he seems on the verge of a major breakdown.

And then there’s Ma-ri, who only wants to live her life and be left alone, even if that means imposing a strict policy of self-isolation to keep people at bay. It clearly doesn’t make her happy, but at least she hopes will make her safe. I ache for her, because she only wants to be accepted — but if she can’t have acceptance, she’ll settle for indifference. That’s a lonely way to live, but I love the contrast between her willingness to be alone, and Jae-min’s self-assurance that all he has to do is give her his attention and she’ll fall at his feet. The boy’s picked the exact wrong girl for that, and I’m looking forward to his education in Introduction to Humble 101.

There’s not a whole lot left to say about the show at this early point, since as I said, this first episode was mostly setup. But I have a very strong feeling that that’s only temporary, and that there will be lots to say as we get into the meaty subjects of social equality and acceptance, so for now I’ll just say this: I’m one-hundred-percent ready to ride this train to the end. Who wants to sit next to me? I promise not to bite your neck!

dramabeans ep recappers are usually the best :ohbi:  :ohbi:

but then again, even with the awesome pilot episodes which getting praised everywhere, Im still not sure how the drama will go from here. Because they 'downgrade' Soo Ri character.

Im agree with the reviewer, one thing that makes OM interesting bcus it touches the subjects of social equality and acceptance. And actually the character who supposed to play the important part on that subject is Soo Ri. Im afraid the drama will also erase the scene where Ma Ri saved Soo Ri. But Im not sure tho.

The question is just, who will be the first human character to find out Ma Ri's identity, and also accept her? It might be Soo Ri like the webtoon, or Jaemin, or maybe... Jo Ah Ra? lol

honestly never gave this drama a chance at first because of it's name but when I found out it was about vampires.. :raep:

plus the cast is star studded :megusta:

can't wait for ep 3!

haha youre not the first one to say that. The name Orange Marmalade was given by the original webtoon author, so the drama must follow the name, too.

I always wonder why the author gave the name Orange Marmalade to this kind of story. Even tho I have read the webtoon, I failed to find anything related to orange marmalade, lol

kissing scene already for ep 3? They moved the story a little bit too fast. Honestly I still want to see the shy and innocent Ma Ri for another 1-2 episodes, lol (cant see Seolhyun act like that often). Oh, well :chu:

It means they will really add something different from webtoon

i heard the name came from Jaurim's song. the title is orange marmalade

Translated by Jayusigan @ LJ

There's nothing I want to do, there's nothing I want to be

But everyone expects something from me.

Can't I just carry on this way

Without any ambitions or special aspirations

Am I strange?

My mind is a bit twisted somewhere and

Is only filled with different thoughts everyday

Am I okay? After I become an adult

I'll probably become more and more different from everyone else

Without anything I want to do, without anything I want to be

I'll just stay like this.

Am I strange?

My mind is a bit twisted somewhere and

Is only filled with different thoughts everyday

Am I okay? After I become an adult-

No, I don't think I'll ever grow up

If everyone was like me, then there would be no conflicts or hate

It would be pretty good, it would be pretty good

There's only one thing I wish for

And that is that, like me, nobody ever becomes an adult

Am I strange?

My mind is a bit twisted somewhere and

Is only filled with different thoughts everyday

Am I okay? After I become an adult-

No, I don't think I'll ever grow up

Here I thought the story was inspired by Big Bang's Monster.

Maybe the song you mentioned is one of the author's favorite song? The lyrics doesnt seem really related with the story, tho

only episode 3 for this week. 1 episode every week then

They really fast forwarded the story, if compared to the webtoon.

Ep 3 (from the middle until the end) seems like a dreamy, happy episode.
It also answered my question, why the drama named 'Orange Marmalade'.
But judging from the preview, episode 4 will be exactly the opposite

I feel like writing some kind of rant, or analysis here. About how episode 3 speeding up the pace too fast, it feels like we're already near the ending.
But I wont instantly jump to a conclusion that its bad. Actually it might be good if you see it from different point of view, especially if you have read the webtoon.

Maybe I'll just wait until ep 3 already subbed.

Wow, after watching it with the eng sub, I think it was actually pretty good. It succeed in building up the romance and the mood up high. Some moments were really emotional.
But... seems like everything will crumble instantly in episode 4, just like the last 10 chapters of the webtoon. Even tho there will be some scenes which is definitely not from webtoon.

I guess they're speeding up so fast because they gonna begin the joseon part of the drama starting ep 5

Actually thats the reason why Im unsure how this drama will go. From high school setting to historical setting, that is such a huge change. Was there any other drama which also has 2 different settings before?

About the ending, maybe it wont be a sad ending, but maybe there will be a 'temporary' sad ending, which is ep 4. If my guess is correct, maybe Ma Ri and Jaemin will be separated for a while. Ma Ri will be forced to leave the school and the city again. Then the story will move to Joseon era for a while. Well, its only my guessing tho.

Anyway, maybe I need to prepare for ep 4. I've seen some scenes which have a potential to give me a huge mindblow, lol.
When Ma Ri cries in her vampire form, resisting the instinct to suck blood :rlytearpls:
