i felt for Seolhyun as Ma Ri but i have to agree that there's a sense of detachment in her portrayal of Ma Ri. the way Ma Ri is written for the drama is probably the reason. too much focus on her pinning for Jae Min making her not layered ( as if she don't care about anything else)

Yea. You know what I thought when I first watched ep 1? I was like "Omg, Seolhyun is too deep into Baek Mari's character, she even look more fragile than the webtoon version."

And seems like thats the way Mari is written for the drama, like you said. In the webtoon version, somehow I felt like theres some sense of hatred towards human in Mari, which slowly gone as she get closer to Soo Ri and Jaemin. But in the drama, I cant see that. Maybe bcus of the changes in Jaemin's character as well.

Well, knetz talking about emotional scenes, so I just thought it will be better if they add those 2 best scenes from the webtoon, which could give Seolhyun more chance to prove her acting. But I think no problem with her portrayal of Mari at all. I think the drama version of Mari (which looks more fragile) is harder to be portrayed than Mari webtoon version.

4. [+865, -177] I had enjoyed itã…‹ã…‹ Good work to the cast

5. [+85, -19] Did anyone else find the sageuk version more fun?ㅋㄱ The plot and acting were much better in that one? Am I weird? ㅋㅋ

6. [+69, -19] Lee Jonghyun's really handsome..

7. [+37, -9] All the couples in this drama were so pretty~~ But I'm disappointed that Shi Hoo and Ara  didn't have many scenes

:'( so sad omg

This drama didn't got the love she deserves!

this drama is not as bad as what some people said. i even enjoyed the saeguk part(the part could be shorter than 5 episodes though)

the crucial problem was actually the flow of the drama. it seems so disjointed

I think the same. Maybe I'll write a long opinion/review about it later.

Is the eng sub already 100%?

So, here it goes. This is coming from my perspective as someone who have read the webtoon. This might be the longest post that I ever wrote here, lol.

Review

I absolutely cannot say that Im not satisfied with the ending. The ending was perfectly beautiful, and everything wrapped up very nicely and not leaving any single thing hanging, especially about the prejudice and discrimination towards vampires in general, which is something that the webtoon lacks. So I can say that the ending is better than the webtoon version.

This drama can be recommended to people who mainly interested in melodrama, great chemistry, and most importantly, the strong message behind the story. The acting of the leads were very good and satisfying. The background musics and OSTs also gave the melodrama feels very well. (even tho Im still salty about Seolhyun not getting even just one OST)

But only if they could care less about the flow and story progression. Even tho some people enjoyed the historical/sageuk part, but I cant deny that it disrupt the flow of the drama. The only positive thing about it, is that the sageuk part gave more melodrama feels. If I I have to put it in one sentence, Jaemin is someone who has been waiting for 300 years to be together with Mari. But after I watched the ending, I feel like the sageuk part doesnt have much important connection with the ending at all, and might be easily forgotten for some people. Also, Mari at the present time doesnt even remember anything from her previous life, even her last words to Jaemin at the Joseon era, that she wanted to be together again with him in the next life. Only Jaemin who remember that.

I think this is like a very experimental drama for KBS, maybe even more than 'The Producer'. I feel like they forcefully added the sageuk part for some reason. I guess, the biggest reason is because they want the drama to attract older viewers. This is just my guessing, but I think there are some factors behind this reason:

1. Timeslot. Too late in the night for younger viewers

2. KBS already have School 2015, which is their best drama to attract younger viewers for this year. So they wanted to make Orange Marmalade to be different

3. They see a little bit of opportunity to drag the story to Joseon era, bcus the webtoon also said something about the peace treaty 300 years ago.

4. If they wanted to add action scenes, theres no better time setting than Joseon era.

5. Yeo Jin Goo is already proven as an actor who matches well with sageuk setting.

Personally, I think I would like it better if they didnt add the sageuk part, because of what I mentioned above. Just follow the webtoon but with some addition, like the ending which is better than the webtoon. Also, maybe because the sageuk took much part in the drama (5 episodes), they lost the opportunity to give Mari more character depth and development. Im not complaining that they gave more screen time to Jaemin, as Yeo Jin Goo is definitely a better and more experienced actor than Seolhyun.

But in the webtoon, Mari is the main character, not Jaemin. Lollypip (Dramabeans reviewer) once said that she could feel for Mari even though the thing that hurts Mari so much cant be clearly seen in the drama. But for me as a webtoon reader, that is also one big problem. In my opinion, Seolhyun's acting saved Mari's character in the drama. Since the first episode, her expressions, gestures, voice intonation, etc successfully gave me the impression that she was severely bullied and discriminated in the past. And even until the last episode, I can see that her 'scar' still remains. But in the drama, theres no certain scene where she actually got bullied by the entire school. While the webtoon showed that near the ending, which is always one of the best emotional moment in the webtoon, for me. We also didnt see much of her friendship moment with Soo Ri.

In my opinion, the drama is more about Jaemin who struggle to accept Mari for everything she is, than about Mari who struggle to have friends, to be accepted by everyone in general, not just by Jaemin. This is clearly the minus point for the drama, compared to the webtoon. It will be better if they could make it more balanced, between Mari's side and Jaemin's side, not completely focused on Jaemin's side.

For rating, I will give: 8 / 10. Great acting, good chemistry, and the good package for melodrama (OSTs, BGMs), are the plus points of this drama. Also they managed to deliver the message of the story very well. But the drama lacks a good flow and story progression, and character depth and development for the female lead (compared to the webtoon). If its not because of the good ending, I might give a lower rating.

==============================================================================

Now, I want to talk a little bit about my favorite moment of the drama, and about the characters. One great thing about this drama, is that every lead characters represent a strong message.

Mari's character, both the webtoon and the drama version, is about self-acceptance. Accepting ourselves for everything we are, even tho we are so far from being perfect, physically and personality-wise. Maybe Im a little bit biased because Im Seolhyun stan, my favorite moment of the drama is definitely Mari's moments. I really like what she said in the last episode. Shes trying to accept herself for whoever she is, and will not regret being a vampire. I also like her moment in episode 3, when she defined the meaning of 'Orange Marmalade'. Lastly, one of my favorite moment is when the band performed, as I like the song itself, 'Dream With A Twist' by Orange Marmalade band. The song sounds like a song for young teenagers, which actually not really my taste, but the lyrics are so meaningful.

I dream of a twist like the story of the Ugly Duckling
I’ll spread my wings and fly
I’ll say what I want, in the coolest way possible
This is me
It’s ok to be different, it’s ok to be wrong
I will live my own way, how I always looked since I was born
What’s so bad about me? I’m doing good
I am me

Zbw8euvl.jpg

Maybe its just me, but I think the lyrics has something that can be related to Seolhyun herself in real life. I wonder if she already realized this or not, haha. Or maybe she already inspired by this song even before I realized it.

For Jaemin, his character is about how to accept the one that you love for everything he/she is. No matter if theres something that you really dislike from him/her. Everyone has flaw, but if your lover's flaw is something that he/she cant change, then you better try to accept it and love it, as a part of him/her. And for the bigger part, his character also showed that love can destroy prejudice and discrimination in our mind.

Shi Hoo, actually I can relate myself the most to him, lol. He is really a strong man with a big heart, and I want to be like him. He can fully support Mari to be with Jaemin, even tho it hurts him, as long as it brings happiness for Mari.

Well, atleast he has Ah-ra now, haha.

====================================================================================

I think thats all. Lol, I cant believe I wrote such a long post. I will also post Lollypip's review as soon as she made one.

Thank you for everyone whos been watching this drama with me, hehe :ohbi:
