A harrowing video has shown the moment a mentally ill man armed only with a screwdriver was shot dead by police.

The footage was taken on a body camera worn by an officer in Dallas, Texas, who attended the home where 39-year-old Jason Harrison lived with his mum Shirley.

She has now released it as part of a lawsuit over her son's death which claims police used excessive force.

It was Shirley who dialled 911 asking for help with her son, who suffered from schizophrenia.

But she maintains he was was known to be non-violent and police - who had visited her house more than 100 times without incident - over-reacted.

The fatal shooting is seen unfolding at 11.30am on a Saturday morning last June.

In the video, Jason appears at the door shortly after his mum and is holding a Phillips head screwdriver.

"Drop that for me, drop that for me guy", the police officer says, as Jason's mum screams his name.

"Drop it. Drop it. Drop it."

Jason is then shot three times, falling as his mum rushes to him and pleads in vain with police.

The shooting was over in seconds and Jason later died, with his wounds including two gunshots to the back.

Mirror Online has censored the most distressing part of the footage.

Because the body camera panned away from Jason at the moment he was shot, his family disagree with police over exactly what happened.

The lawsuit against two officers, John Rogers and Andrew Hutchins, claims they told the media Jason had "lunged" and "jabbed" the screwdriver at them.

But Jason's mum claimed Rogers said the victim had pointed the tool at Hutchins - while Hutchins said it was the other way round.

She is suing the officers for her only son's medical and funeral costs as well as for her own "mental anguish".

The officers deny the claims against them, but the incident has still prompted upset among many in the gun-laden United States.

It is the latest in a string of shootings involving mostly black, unarmed men being killed by police, which have prompted protests and the slogan Black Lives Matter.

Earlier this month police in homeless capital Skid Row, a district of Los Angeles, shot a homeless man dead after he allegedly tried to grab one of their guns.

Tamir Rice was just 12 when he was shot dead by police in Ohio last year after brandishing a fake gun at a play park.

And Michael Brown was 18 when he was shot dead by an officer in Ferguson

Add that to the never ending list of reasons why you should fear cops more than anything on this world.

I feel like it was sort of justified. But that number of shots was not necessary.

He charged forward with a screwdriver which really IS a potentially dangerous weapon if I may add.

When you someone you know gets shot you wont think it's justifiable

Why? I said 'sort of' justifiable because the amount of shots and place where they shot him was unnecessary. Should have just shot him once in a non-deadly area. When a person suddenly charges towards a police officer with a weapon you think the officer is going to come closer to the person and try to tase them? And a taser may not even disable them properly.

Its horrific to think how much power corrupts people.  Rest in peace to the poor man that was gunned down in such a barbaric and unjust  manner, i hope the cops get the proper punishment for their crime.

whatever happened to stun guns or pepper spray? you're not going to arrest a group of thugs, or terrorists you're going to arrest one old man. Just mace him or use a stun gun.

i mean a screwdriver can seriously injure and even kill a person and in the video it does look like the man was planning to stab someone with it. i do feel bad because he has a mental disability. but, since the police has already visited the house over 100 times, i'm assuming he isn't as harmless as his mother claims him to be.

i'm curious though if he was ever checked into a mental health facility because that would've probably prevented the tragedy.

Just watched the video and it does look incriminating for the man. But the police doesn't have to shoot one too many times. Man happy triggers they are.

mentally ill people like this should be supervised by a behavior specialists at least reguarly. a professionally trained doctor might have noticed if a change in behavior was leading to another incident(cops were called 100 times aleady, jfc) and another innocent person would have his life but instead he was shot down by gun happy pigs. shame, rip Jason Harrison

Do you think I was talking about the stun gun girls carry around on campus? Have you not heard of the stun gun?

Many countries and states enforce some police station to use these in most situations, they work fine.

If he was a sane man, then I would have said what the cops did was a matter of protocol, he had it coming charging at them with a screw driver. But in most of these cases a background check is provided beforehand, age, address, and metal health. They should have known.

it seems fear has consumed logic in this society, These cops clearly didn't possess proper deduction skills and obviously didn't have the moral or mental capacity to handle a powerful and life altering weapon like a gun.

Gun laws are out of control. Guns should be given to a specific rank of officers, not any redneck and hill billy with 5th grade education, that attended a few classes to become a cop, because he got sick of illegally making and selling moonshine.
