Jess Lee (Chinese: æŽä½³è–‡; pinyin: LÇ JiÄWÄ“i, born June 1, 1988 in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan, Malaysia), is a finalist and grand winner of the popular televised singing competition One Million Star (7th Season) in Taiwan. She is the first Malaysian to win in the competition and broke the record of scoring the highest mark (30) four times consecutively in the final round.[2] She currently resides in Taiwan and has graduated from the National Taiwan University as an exchange student. In September 2011, Lee's first album, Thank You My Love (æ„Ÿè¬æ„›äºº), was debuted under the label of Warner Music Taiwan. She released her second album, Heaven/Cliff, in 2014 and a third album is currently planned for 2015. Source

Wrapup

When I first heard "Suffering" i thought it was amazing and had high hopes for Jess. Unfortunately, I ended up being disappointed when I listened to her first album. The rest of the songs on the album were nowhere near as good. The second album is much better though, but not in terms of music quality. She didn't drastically improve, or improve at all really. The songs were mostly at the same level but this album was more consistent throughout, which made it a better album overall.

I'm still not sure what to make of Jess. She is talented and has a great voice, but I don't feel that she is living up to her potential. She can be boring at times and you can't help but compare every ballad to "Suffering" and expect more. I sound like I don’t like her very much, but she does have good songs. I am featuring her this week mostly because of what she could be. I'll see what she does with this upcoming third album to decide if i'm a fan or not.

The song Suffering is both a blessing and a curse. On one hand it's an beautifully crafted song that introduces Jess to so many people and brought her a lot of recognition. On the other hand, every other song she has made unfortunately pales in comparison and doesn't live up tp the high standard of that one song.

I really wanted Suffering to be the start of a string of hits and memorable ballads but it's becoming to look more and more like a one hit wonder.

I haven't looked into whether she writes her songs or not but whichever it is, something needs to change. On her A game she has a wonderful voice which is capable of so much, it just needs to be utilised correctly.

I remember watching the MV for Suffering and then completely regretting that decision.

Yup, but once I started it was kinda impossible to stop. Like I was too shocked and weirdly mesmerized to look away.

Ooo a Malaysian! Interesting...

Listened to "Suffering" and "Force To", I quite like them.

I'll listen to more of her songs.

A little rant about Cpop

I've always wanted to get into Cpop but what pushes me away is the sheer number of ballads they have. I mean, every time I hear my friends playing Cpop, it's a ballad! Every freakin time, everywhere I go. Can you recommend some artists which have a good mix of songs?

I first saw her on I Am A Singer, and she's such a sweet girl! Suffering is a beautiful song, she has a beautiful voice...except those high notes were uncomfortable for me to listen to. She strains her voice so much reaching those top notes. I liked listening to her so much more when she covered one of A-Mei's songs in the return episode.

This was probably for Hemlock, but I just wanna throw in 2 cents because I can relate since I'm not big on ballads either. And I think it's something that makes it hard for cpop to go international, or for foreigners to get into cpop.

For a good mix of genres, check out Khalil Fong, S.H.E., Shi Shi (孫盛希), William Wei (韋禮安), Jay Chou. Also, Mayday and I think A-Mei have a good mix of fast and slow songs. For artists that are different from the typical cpop sound, try Dewen和拖鞋, L. Voice (æŽéè¥¿), Tia Ray (è¢å¨…ç»´), Crowd Lu (盧廣仲), Magic Power (MP魔幻力é‡), Miss Ko, M.I.C., Softlipa (蛋堡), MC HotDog (熱狗), MJ116.

Ballads are cpops strength. How can anyone think of it as a bad thing? Ballads in music are like ballet in dance, or the daneil day lewis performance in movies. It's just a different level of quality,

Yeah but not when there is a plethora of basic c-pop ballads that all have the same formula.

Only ones that really stand out are the unique ones like Pao Mo - G.E.M

Lol. It's not that ballads are bad, but I'm just not really into them. And like .gov said, so many of them just sound the same. I do enjoy a good ballad once in a while. I'm just usually not in the mood for sad emotional songs.

Loll, her recent releases were pretty bad. Actually the only song of hers I like is Slide. She's definitely different for cpop though.

I honestly really wanted to like her, especially because suffering was a beautifully put together MV... but I think I only enjoyed the song so much because it really complemented the visuals. It didn't really stand as its own song :/ and that's sort of how I sort of feel about all her discography so far

I was half joking because I love ballads and I know a lot of people criticise cpop for it but theres plenty of stand out ballads in cpop. Yes there's a lot of generic ones but theres lots of really amazing songs too.

@hess obviously you're just not depressed enough lol

Does this mean there's a disproportionately high amount of depression in the Chinese population? Lol, everyone should take Mayday's advice.

basically, her songs are very dull, "suffering" is the only standout...

she has good vocals, but her voice isn't very unique...

and look at her videos and her thrift store wardrobe...

I like her, but her company needs to work harder....

she appeared on I am a singer and that didn't help much...so there is something not right

I might be too busy to put together a thread for next week. I'll see if i can make one for an indie act since their discographies are generally smaller. We'll see.

No worries. As always, appreciate all the work you do to make AOTW every week.

Lmao reminds me of friend who just downright loves Cpop ballads cause he's emotional.

And speaking of stand out ballads, the one that is featured here has an outstanding ballad (Suffering).

lmaoo I agree actually

She seems to have gotten a lot of acclaim or at least hype in Taiwan... but I guess that's what you get for being the only female rapper there lol

Some of her raps are nice but I don't think she's lyrically that interesting/talented.

As for Jess Lee, I think she's okay. Obviously a very talented singer (opera training for how many years??). I saw her when she was competing in One Million Star. I remember when Suffering first came out, and my mom was like, "How can this song get popular? Who can sing those high notes during karaoke??" lol

Its funny because I read an article which blamed ktv becoming more and more popular for the lack of great original and experimental songs, because they just focused on creating easy to sing choruses and simple melodies so it would get chosen by ktv goers.

What, you didn't see the lyrical genius in this??

I still can't get over that selfie stick in the shape of a guy's arm.

That's actually really interesting, I'd believe it. Do you have a link to the article or is it in Chinese?
