How does your country view homosexuality?

I've been in Philippines for a few months now and I realized being gay = wanting to be a girl or being lesbian = wanting to be a boy. Sad to say even homosexuals here have that same black and white thinking. Here if you're gay and aren't feminine, more than likely you won't ever consider yourself gay because well there's a stigma behind the word. At the most you'll call yourself "bisexual" to save face, even though you'd never consider having sex or being in a relationship with a female. Actually it's so easy to spot gays here you don't even need a gaydar to do so. Literally 99% of them try their hardest to be as feminine as possible because that's what society expects them to be like. Which is weird since they often want to be in a relationship with a masculine person.... but how can they find a lover when all of them are feminine?

The words transgender/transsexual are also nonexistent here for the most part. Males who transition to female are still considered "gays" even by their fellow LGBT etc etc. I mean there was an issue here where a US military dude killed a trans woman named Jennifer, but the media and protesters still called her "gay" even though she was well into transition.

The latest poll held here in The Netherlands found that 95% of all people in the country are pro gay marriage, 80% is pro gays adopting children and 86% supports transgender rights, making my country only second to Iceland when it comes to LGBT acceptance.

Homosexual .. No .

But as long as you keep it to yourself and not try to stand out or show it in Public , dress in funny way .. then no one would care .

unless you talk about it yourself , no one would ask you about it . it's private matter what you do with your life ..

people here mind their own business most of the time .  :)

....

Transgenders .. Yes .

as for transgenders they are accepted here by Law and people view them as normal medical condition and that the transgenders are the gender they are ... ..

for example transgender women would be treated like any other women , and by open minded educated people she wouldn't be looked at weirdly or discriminated .

Legally we are very accepting and supportive of homosexuality. In practice when it comes to how people react to homosexuals around them, we still have a long way to go.

It's very much a "I'm fine with gay people doing their own thing, but I'd rather not have to see them doing "gay stuff" around me" type of mentality that is still somewhat prevalent.

Same-sex marriage is legal where i live. Attitudes towards homosexuality vary depending on the person. I'd say most people my age are open-minded. In my experience with gay and lesbian people i've met some have fitted stereotypes and some haven't. As for transgender/transsexual people i've only ever met one person who was transgender.

Unfortunately, absolutely terrible. I think you even get jail time and I wish it wasn't that way but it is, we are though progressing. For one, there's a rise in gay movements in East Africa but we're still very much behind.

I blame religion. Sorry religious folks but we didn't believe in this shit until the missionaries and Islamic settlements. We had our own ancestral gods without any of this literary nonsense.

Mind you the biggest voices against homosexuality are the church. Talking about how it's evil...  :donthinkso:

To be fair, when I told my grandma I had been an athiest for a very long time, she gasped. She's still very much praying for my soul to stop being misled by the devil. I remember her telling me this and I was like

"But mama, I don't even believe in the devil..." :._.:

There are those who fight for the rights of the LGBT community and there plenty of achievements over the years. On the other, there rulers trying to end such rights, the many are Christians and not see gay people as natural something. Comments on social networks are frustrating, Especially now that gay relationships are typical issues in soap operas.

It is the burden of living in a very Christian country, although I'm Christian.

Yeah, generalize the whole continent. That's like saying Japanese men are barbaric because I happened to watch a documentary on a cannibal who was Japanese.

We don't have a law that protects them. The law project that was proposed to the Congress is "frozen" there, because certain conservative groups oppose to that; but homosexuality is not illegal because is not directly forbidden by the Constitution

Even if this generation is more supportive when it comes to homosexuality there's still a long way to go when it come to the traditionalism of the older ones, but if you come out is not like you're going to lose your job because of it or something like that, people (with said exceptions) wouldn't care.

People in general are barbaric. There are innocent civilians dying because of the U.S army.

All I can say though is that it doesn't relate to this topic. In regards to homosexuality in my country, specifically Kenya. Most of the sentiments against it are due to religion. Religion is huge in Kenya and even for me, very rare to meet anyone who isn't religious. The church groups heavily shape how people feel about issues and they shouldn't. Unfortunately, the government and the people aren't as accepting of these ideas. Hopefully with western influence people can get over it. It's great also to see the rise in liberal groups that want to protect the rights of LGBQTs. It's happening, it's just going to take a long time and I can only apologize that my country is like that. I can only start with my friends who for the most part are peeved off by it but don't really spew derogatory nonsense.

To my area, it's a joke, or it's disgusting. I think everyone jokes about it, but secretly they hate it and refuse to understand it  :._.:

In America as a whole, people are starting to come around, but we still got a while to go

in my opinion people don't need to understand it or accept it , BUT also they shouldn't hate on those people who do it , and just leave them alone .

I think LGBT people rather then asking people to acknowledge them it would be much better to ask to be left alone and that everyone mind their own business .

like I for example I can't accept LGB because it's against my religion BUT I believe they have rights like anyone else , they should live like anyone else .

for transgender it's already accepted in my country by law , I think people should be educated about it more cuz 80% of the population don't even know what transgender even is .. !!

Not so good, there are too many homophobes around so most of us even celebrities who are way too obvious about their sexuality,  have to stay in the closet. The funny thing is that people from other countries think that we are open to these things cuz back in 2008 we had same sex marriage.

well it's related , if you educate the people about what LGBT is then they can come to understand and maybe accept it .

I am so sorry for you , hope it get better for your country

my country Egypt Law acknowledge transgenders and give them equal rights to their gender , so I see light of hope for maybe LGBT . but the thing is even if law acknowledge it the population is still not ready to accept it cuz they not educated about What is LGBT .. so my answer is Start educating people and telling them What is that LGBT , maybe they will understand .
