Sue me, but I actually really like this song - there's at least an attempt to do some new things here, even if I still think the overall style is pretty similar to what they've been doing.  It might also just be that it's been months since I've heard a Gesu song and they've been cleansed from my palate a fair bit as a result.  We'll see what my final opinion will be once I can hear this in high quality.

I don't think the overall style is that similar, so much as the feel of the overall track. In that sense, I really actually respect them for doing something like this - it's incredibly difficult to create a song whereby the overall feel is the same while everything else essentially gets changed up. I'm looking forward to hearing this as well.

Listening to it a few more times, yeah, I think that I can see what you mean; the atmosphere and tone, that kind of 'warmth' that I end up associating with a lot of their songs is still there, but the parts that make up the track itself are in this case quite different.  Oddly enough, this is probably the song of theirs that I could most see getting play at a jazz club, since it's got that "jam session'-esque feel to it while still being quite polished.  And they're FINALLY letting the girls sing more, which is something that I really wanted to see post-Miryoku ga Sugoi yo.

Yeah it was a nice change, as well as how the lyrics are sung throughout the song. I wonder what the other tracks are going to be like?

Well, we're due to get 2 B-sides and a 'Funky Version' of "Parallel Spec.", so if I had to give a guess based on what we've seen they might be exploring jazz and it's related genres more and focusing more on the idea of a 'groove'.  Which some of their songs have had in the past, but never really as the centralmost pillar of the track, while I'd say that "Watashi Igai Watashi Janai no" kind of does.  That's just speculation though, so I may be totally wrong.

The thing about modern Jpop is that it's essentially an updated variant of Kayokyoku... Which in turn was inspired by jazz, moreso than American pop, so it ends up being more jazz-like than its Western or Korean pop variants. So it's not surprising to see this sort of growth. Not to say that I'm not looking forward to it, haha

Yeah, that's something that I've talked about with people both here and on Arama a fair bit, since jazz is a significantly greater part of Japanese music overall than it is in the West.  You can see it pop up in just about every genre from pop to hip-hop to rock (here especially considering that they both descend from blues) as a natural part of a song's make-up.  So while it's certainly not surprising, it is welcome to see them digging more deeply into the genre itself, since it has a lot to offer those who are willing to work with it.  Plus I adore jazz, so it's kind of a win-win situation for me.  :P

The rhythm of the song definitely is them (isn't this part of that whole thing of why they're dubbed "progressive hip hop"?). The piano makes it feel a jazzy. The piano seems to be a lot more prominent here than in some of their other songs. The use of falsetto is interesting. I like the song overall.
