Veteran pop-rock band Mr.Children are preparing to release their new studio album "REFLECTION" on June 4th of this year and now have finally chosen to release all of the details about the release itself.

The band have revealed that there will be two distinctly different release skews for "REFLECTION" that are set to include a range of different materials:  "REFLECTION {Drip}" and "REFLECTION {Naked}".  "REFLECTION {Drip}" is a 14 track album that will be released in a Regular and Limited edition, the latter of which will include an hour-long Documentary DVD chronicling the release's recording process.

"REFLECTION {Naked}" is the complete package, which will consist of a 23 track album on a USB stick (it includes the 14 tracks on {Drip} plus 9 additional songs), the Limited Edition version of "REFLECTION {Drip}", an 80 page photobook, a 40 page booklet of original liner notes, all of which will be packaged in a box upon which there is a QR code that can be used to access the Demo versions of songs present on the album.

edit: wrong thread...

the packaging looks nice..

wait they've gotta be kidding with 192kbps quality songs???? what is this limewire??

I think they're frankly just throwing those in so that they have something in .mp3 format; most people will probably be listening to the .WAV versions included considering that they're going to be the same quality as the Studio Master of all of the tracks.  To be honest, if I really wanted another format, I'd probably just copy and convert those.

Nah - if you buy the {Drip} version of the album you get a Download ID that'll let you purchase the extra songs online for 250 Yen (just over $2) a piece.  If you don't want to spend the money to purchase the USB version of the release, but do want the extra songs, you end up paying an extra $18.50 rather than an extra $52-$55.  The tiering is pretty sensible, all things considered.

This is so unlike them, to have this type of strategy in a release. I've been on again off again with misuchiru, so I was really surprised seeing them put that much effort in packaging and bonus content, when usually they try to refrain from doing that stuff. I always got the impression they were against it or something.

I think it has a lot to do with the way this particular release ended up coalescing; the album that they finished first was in all likelihood the version that's on the {Naked} USB, which is blatantly too large to fit on a single CD.  They could have released it as a Double Album, but the article on natalie states that they didn't want to split it up since it would ruin the flow, which led to them considering the USB format for delivery.

Of course, that was bound to be expensive no matter what though (and was a piece of physical media that would have to have something designed to hold it), so what I imagine happened was that they decided to just go all out on that version of "REFLECTION" while simultaneously creating one that matched their more usual model (which if you look at the Limited and Regular Editions of {Drip}, they're basically the same setup that "Supermarket Fantasy" and "[(an imitation) blood orange]" had).  Plus they're adding the Documentary DVD to {Drip}'s Limited Edition for right around 300 yen, and at an hour-long length that's kind of a steal really.  This is also in addition to giving people the option to acquire the extra songs at a fraction of the cost if they wanted them.

The only real difference from their usual skew is the addition of the really expensive {Naked} Edition, which I don't much mind being there, since it's not as though people 'have' to buy it.  You can get the full release musically for effectively $35 cheaper if you don't, really; it's a package meant for their core fanbase (and audiophiles) to indulge in and purchase, rather than the general public.  As to them not liking the kind of model, I think it's less not liking it and more that they've never had a need to spec. a release like this before.  That, and if I'm honest with the way I think the market's going, making physical CDs "more worth" their price is likely to happen across the board, considering that purchasing them is becoming more and more of an enthusiast's market in Japan these days.  So it could also be seen as them getting with the times.

Anyway, hope that this lengthy bit of rambling was at least somewhat helpful, since I know that I can go on a bit at times.    Though if you've been 'on and off' with the band lately, I would also recommend at least giving this release a listen around the time it comes out, since all reports from lives say that they're bringing more rock influences back into their music, which I couldn't be happier about after the very lukewarm "[(an imitation) blood orange]".

Absolutely not, I enjoyed every bit of it. I enjoy discussing music releases and what not. I know most people find it boring, and would rather cut straight to the music, but I enjoy learning about the process. Especially when it comes to a band like Mr. Children, who have been known for doing things a bit differently. I'll check it out when it comes out, just because it's not like any of my favorite artists are doing anything interesting, and I also enjoyed REM.

Yeah, I remember skimming through blood orange and not being impressed. I'm not familiar with their entire discography, but I was a fan of Sense when it came out, and I absolutely loved Shinkai.

If you like watching the process, have you watched Musikuru? It has a segment where two producers talk about how they would produce songs and such for a particular artist. You should watch it!

Mmmm.  We're pretty much in agreement then; I like 'going for the music' as much as the next guy, but I also enjoy talking about things like this since I find that there's a lot of interesting little stories hidden in how music and some releases in particular come together.  It's just fun to puzzle it out and speculate a bit based on what you know, since it usually leads you to unexpected places.  This is especially true when you have an industry where there's a fairly major shift going on within the market (and this is undoubtedly true of Japan's right now).  If you look at the other two major veteran rock acts in Japan, SAS and B'z, you can see that their latest albums have adopted similar skews to what Mr.Children's did.  To me, that's them all seeing the writing on the wall about the market shifting to a more collector-based focus and trying to broaden the appeal of their content by catering to as many demographics as they can.

"Shinkai" is still my favorite Misuchiru album to this day (though I really love the whole run of "Atomic Heart" -> "I Love You", if I'm honest), so if you really like that one, I'd probably recommend "DISCOVERY" and "Q" to you, since they're the closest stylistically, even though "Bolero" is kind of a sequel to it thematically.  "SENSE" is probably their strongest post-"I Love You" album on the whole, I think; the problem with "[(an imitation) blood orange]" is that it used a lot of similar sounds in its songs and relied too much on piano and not enough on electric guitar (it was barely there!).  What gives me hope for "REFLECTION" is that they're apparently producing it all on their own, and everything I've heard about a lot of the songs they've played live are that they're rockier than they've gone in years.  So I can only hope that their ambition pays off on this one.

No, I haven't. It sounds fun though.

Yes, I've noticed that too, especially with SAS. B'z on the other hand... not particularly surprising, they've always tried to keep with the times.

I have listened to Q, I remember liking that album, although for some reason it's no longer in my library. DISCOVERY I haven't listened to, I'll check it out.

There are generally uploads on places like Naver and Jpopsuki, you should really check it out!
