Types taken from http://www.usatodayeducate.com/staging/index.php/opinion/the-six-types-of-college-parents-how-much-do-you-miss-yours

1. The Workaholic Parents

  • The best way to love your kids is to always be working to put food on the table
  • Rarely see your kids during the weekday
  • Occasionally miss a soccer game or concert

Positive: They almost certainly taught you a valuable work ethic that will serve you well in life. You can’t put a price on that.

Negative: You probably haven’t seen them since the nineties…

2. The Helicopter Parents

  • The Helicopter Parents want to know where you are, what you’re doing and who you’re doing it with…even though you might live hours away
  • Over protective
  • Always texting/calling your kids when they're out of the house
  • Twice daily phone calls and weekly Skype dates

Positive: You know they care and, clearly, you are their number one priority in life.

Negative: That ankle bracelet isn’t as comfortable as it looks…

3. The Awkward Parents

  • Socially awkward, try too hard to be funny
  • Awkward convos with your kids friends
  • Awkward jokes, loud laughs in public
  • Embarrassing stories shared all the time

Positive: Life will never be boring.

Negative: It’s really hard to pretend you’re “not with them†when you carry their genes.

4. The Besties

OK, so must of us sort of wish that Lorelei Gilmore was our mother. For those lucky enough to have a best friend parent, it means you have a 24/7 built-in buddy. Even on those days when your friends are busy with work and classes, you can always call your mom to talk about the gorgeous boy in your finance class or beat your dad’s high score in Words With Friends. Who knew that your mom and dad could actually be cool friends, too?

Positive: Friends come and go, but your parents are forever (cheesy, but true). Befriending them is such a benefit.

Negative: Eventually, there’s going to be a time when your mom or dad just has to play the parent card and that probably won’t be a welcome change. Plus, sometimes you just simply want to talk to your mom, not your buddy.

5. The Party Parents

  • Regina Georges mom
  • "You need booze, I'll get you and your friends some. Just as long as your safe"

You know those parents…the ones who threw the raging after-prom party and made absolutely every effort to make sure you knew they were the cool parents hosting it? Fun? Yes. Terrifying? Absolutely.

Positive: Hey, who doesn’t want to be the one with the “cool†parents?

Negative: The partying parents don’t exactly have a good grasp on responsibility and structure, which can make for poor guidance. When your mom wants to hit up a frat party with you, you should probably have a talk…

6. The Ward and June Cleaver

  • Typical 1930's ideal parents
  • Stay at home mom, workaholic dad
  • Kinda Stepford wife-ish

As we speak, your mother is probably in the kitchen whipping up something scrumptious (in pearls and a fabulous dress, of course), while your dad saunters through the door after a long day of work. The Ward and June Cleaver are the quintessential sitcom parents. They always have the perfect pep-talk to brighten your day and a lesson to teach you (complete with group hug).

Positive: They just might be the two keenest people you know. Shucks, Wally and the Beav were so lucky!

Negative: You love them, but having non-Stepford parents could be refreshing too.

My parents are some of the most awkward people that I have ever met. And the description listed above really suits them.  :ahmagah:

And I love them for that.  :chu:

I want to be The Besties type but I'm pretty sure I'm going to be pretty awkward with them too since times are changing.

My mom is a party parent. She used to buy us alcohol, take us to parties and introduce me boys (ew) but we've only known each other for a brief amount of time.

I want to be nothing like her. I just want to be a normal parent, and I just want to have a good relationship with my child. I don't want to be a nagger mom I just want us to have a good time yet I will be strict about studies yet give him or her the freedom she deserves and has earned.

My dad is a workaholic. When I grew up with him there were times where I'd go weeks, sometimes months without seeing him even though we lived in the same house. He did double shifts all the time, and then just came in halfway in the night and went to sleep until after I got up for school and then when I came back he was gone again.

I'm not gonna be a parent but if I was I'd probs be a workaholic too, tho not as extreme as my dad.

None of the above, seriously...

Mom is really cool but of course has an aura where you know not to cross the line with her

Dad is concerned with me turning into a well-balanced human

Both are blunt, will tell strangers off in public and not care

Both have their own style fashion-wise

Not workaholics, helicopter, not totally besties, certainly not awkward, not whatever the others are

I love my parents, I'm just going to describe them both together since they are similar lol. They are a mixture of workaholic and helicopter and I'm more of a bestie with my mum.

I won't be like them, or rather I CANNOT be like them... I'm the easy going type and I'd let my children do as they please.

evidence: I let my brothers do as they please when I'm looking after them lols whereas my parents are more strict and does not allow them to play games too much or eat junk when they are present (at home) lol.

my mum probably is the besties type while my dad is the awkward type ^^ but i do enjoy having both of my parents.

I probably will be a workaholic type of parent because it seems to be the nature of my job. But I would prefer to be the besties type like my mum
