By that question I mean which authors in your country do people immediately think of when they are asked about the literature of their respective country?

For e.g. from the country i m from these authors would either Taras Shevchenko, (Ivan Franko or Lesia Ukrainka).

What about your country?

Discuss.

I would say Goethe, but I guess it depends who you ask. For example, most of the teenagers who like to read here would probably say Kerstin Gier or Cornelia Funke because they're the most popular authors for children's and young adult's books.

Pramoedya Ananta Toer, Goenawan Mohamad, A.A. Navis, Sutardji Bachri, Seno Gumira Ajidarma, Ayu Utami, Sapardi, Chairil Anwar, Djenar Maesa Ayu, Putu Wijaya. There're still many but those I mention are 'legends' for me

tolstoy, dostoevsky, chekhov, bulgakov, solzhenitsyn, pushkin, gogol, turgenev, nabokov, bunin, pasternak, etc

  • Chinua Achebe is one of the most internationally-acclaimed writers from Africa
  • Wole Soyinka, a playwright, poet and writer won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1986

and many more. I havent read the others but those two are the most famous, and we used their books in school for literature. There was even a TV series from Chinua Achebe in my country. It came out when i was still young, a long time ago.
