"Stop stealing all the white people's superheroes. Make up your own"

"That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard," Rodriguez told TMZ. "Yeah, I think is so stupid to like ... because of this whole like minorities in Hollywood thing. But it's so stupid. Like, stop stealing, you know, all the white people's superheroes. Like, make up your own. Know what I'm saying? What's up with that?"

An actress best-known for her roles in Avatar and the Fast and the Furious franchise has spoken out against casting nonwhite performers as superheroes traditionally perceived as white.

Michelle Rodriguez told a reporter from the gossip and celebrity news site TMZ—who jokingly asked if she’d be starring as The Green Lantern—that she’s opposed to the recent vogue of proposing (and sometimes casting) nonwhite stars in franchise fare. “It’s so stupid,†she said. “Stop stealing all the white people’s superheroes. Make up your own. What’s up with that?â€

The African-American actor Michael B. Jordan will star in Fantastic Four as the Human Torch this summer, and comedian Donald Glover has long been touted as a contender for a black Spider-Man.

In fairness, the Hispanic actress’s own movie work has tended towards films based on original material. But her critique elides the fact that it’s much more difficult to get a movie made when it’s not based on an existing property, and those existing properties–be they comic books or otherwise—more often than not feature a cast of white characters. That makes for limited casting options for nonwhite actors less fortunate than Rodriguez.

if a white person were to portray a character that was originally of a different race/colour, racism would be thrown left and right.

ikr imagine if they cast Brad Pitt in 12 Years a Slave, whyte ppl would never hear the end of it!!

but hire a black guy as a superhero and everyone praises it. like wtf

Pfffffft..... sorry, but I don't agree with this person.

If non-Whites have been systematically opressed throughout all these years by white people, why can't they have nice things for once? Even if they are works of fiction...... Like come on, I'm white as mayonnaise and I'm okay with a Black American-Latino Spiderman, for example, I don't feel robbed or betrayed ._.

Yes, because minorities have so little roles in Hollywood as it is. White people don't get hurt by minorities starring in originally white roles because there is an ABUNDANCE of roles for white people in Hollywood. Minorities are constantly fighting for roles because most of them go to white people. You are literally comparing apples to oranges; trying to equate white people portraying people of different races and minorities fighting to even be portrayed at all.

It wasn't

But there was several black Green Lanterns. The Green Lantern character itself is fairly unique, in that it changes constantly.

Anyway, I don't see it as an issue as long as actors play the parts right. I'm always more worried about the script than the casting.

I for one am a big fan of Samuel Jackson as Nick Fury and would be fine with other similar changes.
