No 2PM got more popular after Jay left.  They were popular until 2012 around the time that Big Bang started to take over.

The thing about 2PM is that like SNSD they were variety idols.  They had good personalities and ppl like Taec and Nichkhun significantly added to their appeal.

Musically though they probably had their biggest hits with their first album: Heartbeat and 10 of out 10 which were huge hits.  The follow ups were not quite on the cultural phenomena level but they were pretty good songs and did well enough.  Their last popular song was probably Hands Up.

The problem is that 2PM honestly is not a good group.  They're nice guys but half of them can't sing or can't rap and they are just okay performers.  This is a huge issue because they were supposed to be a performance group.  Also when they abandoned Korea to start promoting in Japan... while this was a smart monetary decision their lack of appearances on TV really diminished their popularity.  It's extremely rare to find a young Kpop fan in Korea who really stans 2PM.

IMO the main issue is Jay.  Although the group continues to get even more popular after he left, it's really just the wave after the crash.  Jay was still on that first album and in later projects the energy is just different.  Not only in the choreography where Jay was crucial but just the attitude of the group.  He brought this punkass idiot mentality that's important in pop. Now they're just a bunch of nice strapping guys like Chippendales dancers.  I think if Jay had stayed with the group with his musical views and opinions 2PM would be a lot more relevant.

For one thing they'd be able to promote seriously in the US with Jay, and I think they'd be a LOT more popular with international fans... possibly on the level of Big Bang for internationals.  Losing Jay the group lost half its strength.  I think much like EXO is going to be in China... they'll never be as big as they could have been without Kris and the other guy.  2PM could have been the first Kpop group to have some play in the US but now they're a joke as far as American tastes are concerned and they will basically just be a Japanese group with some occasional Korean promotions until they all go into the army in 2-3 years and disband

how long was jay in the group?

The large hiatus plus hands up and ADTOY weren't exactly public friendly songs. I mean they still have a large fanbase but they don't have as much public interest

what was wrong with hands up? i thought it was popular?

Oh Lord no, Jay Park's music is horribly generic.

Can you imagine if he composed something like Girlfriend for them? No thanks.

wow a few sensible comments in here :O.

In my opinion as a fan(and I know some won't agree and that's okay) it was a combination of things. One, they kinda left Korea behind a bit when they were at a point where their Korean fanbase was recovering after Jay Park's departure. That was around 2011. Their long hiatus came at a time when more of the newer and younger boy groups were gaining more and more recognition amongst fans and the public. But in a way, their hiatus couldn't be helped, thanks to Nichkhun's unfortunate accident, and the fact that 2pm flat out refused to promote without him. Add the fact that they haven't been releasing any public friendly material, and there you go.

They aren't doing bad by any means. Their momentum in Korea has died down a pretty significant amount, but they are still getting opportunities in acting, solo efforts, endorsements, etc. in and out of Korea, so it's not all a bad thing.

how long was jay in the group?

Just shy of a year

I'm honestly curious, when was the last time you checked out a live performance for 2pm? They've improved immensely in the vocal department honestly. I can provide you with youtube videos if you want proof.

As far as Jay goes, I don't understand this argument. If Jay is/was so vital to 2pm's popularity, why isn't his solo career taking off? His singles do poorly digitally (worse than 2pm's) and physically he doesn't sell more than 2pm either. If his attitude is so important and appealing, why isn't he all over variety shows to bring that impact so important for pop? And don't tell me JYPE is cockblocking him rofl

Did you know all of 2pm have composed songs on their albums? Have you heard how amazing their music has become in the past two years since they started having more input in their direction? I feel like so many people offer their opinions based on the 2pm they knew years ago and haven't even taken the time to actually see how 2pm are right now.

wow this thread is literally just full of people who don't know anything about 2pm talking like they do, i recommend op maybe dont take these answers to heart and if you are genuinely curious maybe pose this question in the official 2pm thread, where people who are actually knowledgeable about 2pm can answer your question accurately.

Since when talent in rap is a factor to be a top tier group? and still more than half of 2pm is talented in different fields.

They started losing popularity when they took a hiatus after Hands Up, it's mainly JYP's schedule fault. But it's okay, Nichkhun alone gain more than 90% of "trend" groups and the vocalists have a solo album and tours, i guess they don't mind not being a trend group anymore.

I had a revelation some time ago and since then, I stopped caring about their popularity in Korea and focused on Japan instead (for me they're doing very well for a Kpop group in there, provided things aren't what they used to be). Also, regardless of actual wrongdoings done by them (they have done wrongdoings!), it amuses me how many people still think that old stuff about Jay Park and Chippendale dancers are currently appliable to 2PM at this rate....
