Remember 15 months ago, when the pop blogosphere endlessly debated and dissected Lady Gaga's ARTPOP album? John Mayer is trying to bring that era back! Apparently unprompted but bracingly earnest, the veteran singer-songwriter fired off a string of tweets about Gaga's polarizing pop LP on Thursday night (Feb. 19), and garnered a response from the recently engaged pop star. "I know this is going to sound like I'm trying to stir up media, but I have huge respect for Lady Gaga and I wanna tell you why," Mayer began on Twitter. "She released a record that didn't get the love she was probably hoping for, which happens to REAL artists. And she's stood by it." In case anyone thought Mayer was discussing Gaga's Cheek To Cheek album with Tony Bennett, he clarified by continuing, "There is no desperate attempt to be as successful as before by any means necessary, no Artpop 2.0 with cynically produced hits. I respect artists who release music they believe in and with a slow steady pulse while doing it, live or die. So yah. fin. Carry on Gaga. I can dig it. Everyone else should, too." About an hour after Mayer finished his positive Twitter diatribe, Gaga responded on Twitter: "Just got out of a great rehearsal! That was really cool @JohnMayer So thoughtful. The respect is mutual." Gaga's "great rehearsal" was for this Sunday's Academy Awards, where the pop phenom will be performing a special tribute and making her Oscars debut. Cheek To Cheek, Gaga's collaborative album with Bennett, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart upon its release last September, and the pair performed at the Grammy Awards earlier this month.
