THE YOUTH
Hoya and Dongwoo, of Infinite H, stepped into an empty house. Even in a garden with haphazardly grown grass and on top of a dusty bench, they smiled serenely.

HOYA

You seem tired.
I haven’t gotten a lot of sleep lately. I’m not really good at taking short naps in the waiting room or the van.

 

Do you eat regularly?
No. I’ve been trying to lose weight. Even when I do eat, I just grab something from the convenience store.

 

What do you buy from the convenience store?
Banana milk.

 

Only banana milk?
Yes. I like banana milk. I drink one at least once a day (laugh).

 

How do you survive if you don’t eat or sleep well?
I have a lot of fun because the album is doing well and the fans also really like it.

 

You must have had even more fun since you got to write the lyrics this time. I read a couple interviews of you saying that you wanted to write your own lyrics.
I was a little disappointed because I didn’t get to write my own lyrics for Infinite H’s first album when I have been writing lyrics for Infinite.

 

Why didn’t you write the lyrics for the first album?
We were worried about the prejudice against idols doing hip hop. And we also wanted to lay a good foundation.

 

What do you refer to to write lyrics? I heard that you watch a lot of movies. Does it help?
I don’t really refer to anything in particular to write lyrics, but I think it’s good to watch a lot of movies when you can. I watch a lot of movies at the movie theater.

 

What have you watched recently?
I watched the <Foxcatcher> and <Jupiter Ascending>. I usually enjoy everything except for horror movies.

 

Why do you not like horror movies? There are people who don’t like it because they’re too cruel or because they don’t like being frightened.
I’m one of the latter. I don’t like being scared and having that feeling haunting you even after the movie is finished. I’m scared that someone will be hiding beneath my bed after I come back home from watching a horror movie.

 

I can hear some Busan accent as you talk more. Do you know that women like men who are from Gyeongsangdo?
Haha, there are some fans who occasionally ask me to talk in my Busan accent. Some of my friends purposefully use Busan accent to look cool, too. But I can’t really do it.

 

Why?
It’s like asking a Seoul citizen to talk in Seoul accent. It’s strange.

 

You also have a diverse voice. I was amazed that you have such distinct voices for singing and rapping.
Vocalization is totally different for rapping and singing. I had a very hard time with the songs that included both rapping and singing, so I had to practice a lot. I thought my voice sounded too hollow when I rapped so I practiced rapping huskily too. After practicing continuously, I noticed that my voice changed a lot ever since my debut.

 

What else have changed ever since your debut?
I think my personality changed a lot. Some friends tell me that I became more sensitive, but some tell me that I became softer, so I’m a little confused, but I think I did change. I became a little bit more mature, too.

 

What does it mean to become more mature?
Acting less immature. Having a sense of responsibility in everything that I do.

 

Are you always responsible? Aren’t there times when you compromise?
Mm…I usually don’t drink if I have a schedule the next day but if I’m too stressed, once in a while I might be like, ‘Screw this. Let’s drink.’

 

Your birthday is going to be right around the corner by the time the March issue of <Dazed> comes out. Is there anything that you want?
I’m not going to say it.

 

Why?
My fans might feel burdened. They don’t need to give me anything for my birthday. I’m not just saying this; I really appreciate their thoughts and feelings.

 

You really are mature.
Nah, I still have a long way to go.

Do you like animals?
Yes. My family used to have a cat and a dog.

 

Do you not have any pet right now?
The cat got really sick so it’s not home right now, but we do have a dog. Its name is ‘Ddol-i’.

 

‘Ddol-i’? Sounds like you named your dog without giving it much thought.
No, if you look at my Instagram, you will see that Ddol-i is in most of my pictures and videos. Would you like to see one?

 

No. You already showed me two. That’s good enough. (Laugh) How is Infinite H? The second album <Fly Again> has been doing very well.
I’m glad that it’s doing well because I’ve been waiting for Infinite H all this time. I get to enjoy hip hop, my favorite genre of music, to my heart’s content!

 

Did you and Hoya write lyrics for all the songs on this album?
We wanted to for the first album too, but we also wanted to be careful. Primary-hyung helped us a lot. It was definitely different this time, writing our own lyrics.

 

How did you two write the lyrics? Didn’t you two clash at all while writing the lyrics for the same songs?
We talked a lot back at our dorm, like, ‘How about I do two measures first, and then you take the latter two?’, or ‘Should we take this part out?’ It probably went well because we weren’t being greedy. It’s kind of like dating. You need to avoid any unnecessary fight.

 

What song do you like the most from this album?
‘Sorry, I’m busy’. The lyrics and the melody are ‘strong’, and I always wanted to try something like this.

 

You really are busy like this song, right? How do you manage your health? Even young people these days at least take their vitamins.
Yes, I take all sorts of vitamins, around five different kinds. I take Omega-3, Squalene - the shark extract, and I forget the names but one for the blood vessels, one for the liver, and vitamin C.

 

Do you eat all of them? Did your parents get them for you?
No. I do my own research and buy them. (Laugh)

 

What else are you interested in besides dietary supplements?
I like figures. I treasure the figures made in my image or Bearbricks, too.

 

Why do you think that men like figures?
I think we tend to fantasize through these figures. You let your imaginations run wild and come up with something that is like an animated film.

 

Like fighting an enemy or saving someone in distress?
Yes. I tend to spend a lot of time in my room imaging those kind of stuff, so I’m never bored even when I’m by myself. My room gets really messy when I lay all those figures out and about, so people tell me that my room is very chaotic.

 

If you do ever become a radio DJ, which do you think will suit you better - afternoon or night?
Afternoon. My voice isn’t really suited for the night radios, since I talk too loud and fast. I probably can’t convey emotion very well. But since there is Cultwo Show at 2PM, I need to avoid that time slot.

 

Haha. You even picked your time slot already. Try coming up with your own closing line.
If I do get 12PM, I guess I can say ‘Eat well~’ so that it’s like I’m eating lunch with my listeners.

Lastly, how would you define Infinite H?
Mm…it’s a ‘self-directed music-producing group.’

I don't get where that whole idea of losing weight came from, he was never particularly big to begin with. Dieting is a bad idea especially when he has intense schedules, dance practices and stuff all year long.
