[SBS 2015] Heard It Through The Grapevine

I was one of those people who started watching this drama because it's the same team that worked on Secret Love Affair. I'm so glad the team is getting the attention it deserves. An SBS slot spanning 30 episodes?! It feels like a gift from the gods.

I went into it not knowing anything really, I and didn't really care because I already knew it was going to be good. But HOLY SHIT this show is so funny, and it takes a lot to make me laugh. I'm glad that they are reincorporating the concept of the slyness of people and the subtle (and sometimes, not so subtle) dirtiness within the castles of the elite, as they did with Secret Love Affair. A couple of insignificant actors aren't really doing it for me but that's fine because it's not like I've ever encountered a K-drama that I didn't find some faults in (although with this team, I've found the least). Just like with SLA, they don't treat the audience like retards and instead of spelling everything out for us, they pay very close attention to subtleties.

And because it's subtle, some people just don't "get" it. I've seen people call this drama and SLA slow, morose, boring, confusing. But shows like these are such a fresh breath of air to me because it doesn't scream "lowest denominator entertainment". For me, this isn't just good for a K-drama, it's good for any show; the writer and director on this team have a personal style that sets their dramas apart from all the rest. Something I've noticed even amongst fans of these shows is that they don't like the "business" aspect of it, but it's decently thought-out and I'm glad that they give us another interesting angle to look at.

This is the first drama I've watched in months and my love for this team has been rekindled so much that I plan on watching Secret Love Affair (for the third time, mind you) once this drama is finished.

I'm done wailing about the show now. I came to this site for the first time in a while in order to find some discussion on it, lol.

I've never watched SLA, but I've read good reviews about it and it seems, like yourself, a lot of people are watching HITTGV because of the writer's track record with SLA.

I agree with everything you wrote, sometimes you need a show that's not about the flash and glitter and is more about the plot, storytelling, and the feelings it evokes that make people relate and enjoy the characters. I love how this show pays attention to the smallest details, like how anal the Hans are and how the servants gossip and eavesdrop on everything that happens in the Han house. I also love all the heartwarming moments in the show and the silly comedic endings in every episode, it's a great balance that keeps you wanting more as well as just appreciating the whole work.

And yup, I'm in the same boat, I watch a lot of dramas but there aren't many that I fully and thoroughly like, the last that fits that description would be Misaeng, but before that there hasn't been any where I loved the story and characters in a long time. I think it's a great year for Korean dramas, if stories like Misaeng and Heard It Through The Grapevine can come out within months of each other.

I'm not going to say it's mandatory, but you NEED to see SLA. What an evocative, beautiful drama. I'm so glad that I decided to give it a chance.

I was pretty turned off just by the name itself because I didn't like the thought of glorifying infidelity, but it was so different from what I expected it to be. You might know this, but it's funny because the same team worked on a drama before this called "A Wife's Credentials" which is also about a woman having an affair. I've seen a few episodes and the mood is somewhat different, a little more quirky but still heavy. I want to finish it but everywhere I go, the quality is so bad or the subs occasionally get all jumbled up. Hopefully I'll find it somewhere soon in decent quality.

One of the reasons why I'm so happy that the team is doing so well is because the director worked on a drama a while back called "The End of the World" or something like that, and ratings were so low that the channel ended up cutting the drama short by a handfull of episodes, forcing them to wrap up the story quicker than they were supposed to. Really a shame because it seemed good, I guess it was too different for the Korean audience. They haven't had it easy and I'm relieved that they're making a place for themselves in the drama world. I wish they could make them more frequently, but once a year will have to do, lol.

And I might have to give Misaeng a shot soon. I actually jumped over it when it first started to air but recently I've heard many good words about it!
