Religious hate suspected in Southfield bus stop stabbings

 

Two Detroit men were stabbed at a Southfield bus stop. They have been released from the hospital.

A man asked two people whether they were Muslims before stabbing them at a Southfield bus stop on Saturday, the victims told police.

 

 

A 52-year-old Detroit man was stabbed five times; once in the face, once in the neck and three times in the back, Southfield Police Chief Eric Hawkins said. A 51-year-old Detroit man who tried to intervene was stabbed in the hand. The incident happened at about 10:30 p.m. near Northland Mall at 21500 Northwestern Highway.

Minutes later and a few blocks away, police arrested a 39-year-old man, believed to be from Detroit, who's suspected of stabbing the two men. He was carrying two knives and some marijuana, according to a news release from Southfield Police Department.

"We are getting indications through my officers that the suspect was somewhat incoherent afterward, and so there's a question about his stability," Hawkins said.

Police have contacted the FBI, which is also investigating the incident to see whether hate-crime laws were violated, according to a news release Tuesday from Southfield Police Department.

"The victims in this case said that the suspect asked them if they were Muslim," Hawkins said. "They responded that they were not, and then there was some back-and-forth between the victims and the suspect."

Then, the man started stabbing one of them, he said. Police say they don't believe the men knew their attacker, whom appears to have acted alone. Both men have been released from Providence Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Possible charges against the man may include two counts of attempted murder, one count of carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent, possession of marijuana and ethnic intimidation, Hawkins said. The FBI investigation could lead to federal charges if ethnic intimidation is believed to have been a factor.

Police arrested the man minutes after the incident while he was walking in the area of Greenfield Road and 7 Mile. He had two folding knives with blades about 3 inches long, and one of them appears to have been the weapon used in the stabbing, Hawkins said.

This is fucked up and idiotic. At least the victims are recovering well and the guy was arrested.

It seems the guy had already made up his mind and just wanted to pick a fight with them.

in an interesting turn of events (to me anyway as i'm just reading up on this and it wasn't part of the original post):

 

 

 

Thomas allegedly identified himself as Muslim before launching his attack, Hawkins said.

Thomas allegedly then said he was a Muslim and asked the two victims if they were as well. After the two men said they were not, Thomas allegedly attacked them, Hawkins said.

I was confused initially, because i thought it was some (likely) random white dude who was attacking people he thought were Muslim. Not the case it seems.

i wonder if it will still be considered a hate crime...if they were indeed attacked by a Muslim man, for not being Muslim.

 

Bad press either way... clearly this guy is not a representation of anyone but himself...but in current climate.......i don't know how objective people are willing to be.

buzzfeed actually has quite good and reliable journalism and ethics imo.... if they are wrong they will correct it...but it's from a police statement....

I don't know if they have recently added this information (no indication of this)... or if OP purposely left it out.....

Even though it's clear what was the original purpose of this thread and that the OP has been known to do some alterations or leave things out in articles posted, in this case it seems they added the name of the suspect and the fact that he was a Muslim later on. Some comments seemed to be complaining about the fact they took a lot of time releasing the extra details.

When I posted the article this detail was not out . He told the police he was Muslim after his arrest.

'We are getting indications through my officers that the suspect was somewhat incoherent afterward, and so there's a question about his stability,' Hawkins said. I'm also surprised he's a Muslim since they found drugs on him, terrible hate crime either way
