A former member of member of Korean boy band EXO stars in the largest-ever release for L.A.-based distributor China Lion. Somewhere We Only Know centers on the female lead, JinTian (Wang Likun), who is going through a difficult time. Her boyfriend backs out of their marriage, and her beloved grandmother dies. She travels to Prague to heal her broken heart, only to meet Ze Yang (Kris Wu) and discover the true background about her grandmother’s love story.

“We picked up the title from Distribution Workshop around New Year’s,†said China Lion’s Robert Lundberg. “Our Beijing-based president Jiang Yanming highlighted the film to our Los Angeles team when he was introduced to it, as it fits our core female audience as well as our ‘sweet spot’ genre of a romantic dramedy.†China Lion’s Valentine’s releases tend to be among the niche distributor’s highlights of the year. Beijing Love Story opened in nine theaters on Valentine’s Day 2014 and grossed more than $140K, and the simply titled Love bowed February 17, 2012, grossing north of $83K in seven theaters.

“[The] Chinese New Year is also occurring so close [to the release on February 19] as well, so we were looking for something especially high profile to place during the weekend,†said Lundberg. “Having a feature film that checks all our boxes as well as puts ex-EXO supergroup member Kris Wu front and center as the male lead allowed us to go wider than normal.†Lundberg said Wu’s fan base will appeal to potential moviegoers outside its core Chinese-speaking audience in North America. He also added that its core audience likely will be drawn to romance rather than “handcuffs and whips,†referencing Fifty Shades Of Grey.

“We’ve countered the Fifty Shades release with a social media campaign highlighting star Kris Wu such as hashtagging #50ShadesOfKris #LoveShouldntHurt … which we’ve gotten a good reaction from,†added Lundberg. “We’ve coordinated special advance Thursday showings in those theaters not showing Fifty Shades and made sure that we’ve interacted on a regular basis with all the North American fan clubs for EXO and Kris. We’re spending some major advertising dollars in getting the word out.â€

China Lion will bow Somewhere Only We Know in 46 theaters, which Lundberg said is more than double the number of locations for most of its releases. Among them, the company is targeting cities where it never has  ventured, but have large student populations with first-language Chinese speakers including Ann Arbor, MI, Fayetteville, AR, Madison, WI, Columbus, OH, Pittsburgh, Durham, Blacksburg, VA and Iowa City.

Now why didn't SM try to start shit here in America like they did in China?  Probably because we Americans LOVE scandal and sticking it to "the man."

I would love to see a showing of SOWK in my own city..

SM wouldn't try it in the states, but that's mostly because we are irrelevant.

If it is doing as well as they say it is, they might expand it to more cities.

because y'all are irrelevant...

Yes, that's it.  The largest market in the world is irrelevant.

Trust me, if they could get a foot hold in America, they would.  They're already trying.  They advertised all the time on the radio when I was in LA.  They hold concerts here.  Of course it's easier to break into the Asian market then the US.  But don't fool yourselves into thinking they don't want to expand further.

Although the market in USA is huge and has a lot of potential, it also is much more competitive in a way, since the competition in not "fair". Chinese/Korean movies/singers already start behind because there's a lot of "prejudice" towards non-English movies/songs. They just don't sell as well, so it's hard. The small profit Korean companies make in the international market doesn't even compare to how much they get from the local East-Asian market...

Kpop is nothing here. It's not even in the 1%. That's why you're seeing CL trying now because she has like no competition here in terms of other Kpop acts in the market (not doing shows but selling music here and being on the radio etc).

They're not trying here because they don't give a shit about here. LSM in 2011 said they had no plans of debuting acts in the West because the future was Asia.

Try with whom? EXO? They'll probably hold some tours there in the future. SM tried US debuts for BoA and SNSD and both kind of.. under-performed.. so I don't think they're all too willing to debut another act there now, especially EXO because they lost their only English speaker.

I know a lot of non-EXO fans who went to see the movie because they liked him.  I think a lot of Kpop fans who don't particularly like EXO feel more open to liking Kris now since he's out of the group.

Lmao that's because LA has a good size Korean-American population.  KMF has been going on for so many years now. Notice whenever a Kpop act comes here they go to cities that have a good size Korean-American population because that's who they expect to show up. Not a bunch of people who are non-Korean. I remember when Infinite was here in the US for an mv shooting or something and they were in LA and had people come to see them they had no fucking idea they had any fans in the US. LSM already said in 2011 that he didn't give a shit about the US because the future was the East.

SNSD WAS NOT a debut. They only were on two tv shows for morning and evening. That's it. You didn't see them in the press or any other day time or evening shows. They were promoting their album being sold here. The same one you could buy off Kpoptown for a bit cheaper price. At the time on AKP people were saying how they couldn't find the album anywhere and they looked at all the big stores. I went to my local Best Buy and they had no fucking clue who I was talking about.

Whenever any Kpop act comes to the US it's always cities with big Korean-American populations because that's who they're expecting to show up because they grew up with Kpop. Let me know when they start going to places in the midwest or southeast besides Atlanta and Florida.

Good for exo that Kris' movie is carrying EXO's name with it, audience might be interested in knowing the group that Kris left.

on the other, some exo-ls will start saying again that Kris is only famous bc of EXO/SM. Well, I haven't seen SM giving their artists a role in movie, that was released in West. And there's no mention that the movie was selected bc Kris from EXO was in it.

i see he is still riding in exo's fame to not have his movie flop...bc lbr if he wasnt a member of exo or in sm international fans would never care about him

(actually scratch that, if he wanst in sm, he would just be cleaning floors in a subway in canada bc he is that talentless)

LMAOOO of course fangirls are going to downvote me...why did i ever expect anything different

but did i say a lie tho  :imstupid:

I don't agree that Kris would be mopping any floors since he speaks 4 languages fluently, is a voracious reader, is highly educated and comes from a wealthy family. I do agree that he is working his celebrity from EXO fame. I don't blame him for that or for leaving EXO.

If it makes you feel any better, I got down voted by them too and I'm an EXO-L. Guess they can't handle the truth. SM want's that market of 1billion 400 thousand Asian souls in China. In the Unites States we only have a population of 310 million (only 5.8% Asian).

Hmmm, 310 million verses 1billion 400 thousand. The math is pretty easy.

In comparison, I don't think the US market is SM's focus right now. Also, from the math, I can easily understand why SM would not feel any threat from that movie being distributed in the US. SM are greedy bastards but when it comes to money, they are not stupid.

mte, the us was never a focus for them, after boa's flop they never tried it again...it's just going to cost you money instead of gaining it

but fangirls cant accept oppa might be talentless or money hungry

I'm not really one EXO fan, but I see the variety shows with friends and Yifan always caught my attention. After all the shit when Yifan go out I feel more love for Kris and I know more people like that. Kris caught fans who doesn't have nothing with EXO. So, stop all that complain.

I know they do, but they can't. I reckon if CL/2ne1 is successful (to a degree) than sm will try too along with the rest of the industry following closely behind

Of couse. Just with all that shit when Kris go out people from other fandons was touched with that and Kris receive more attention from they.
And in China, the fans of Kpop is just one percentage. With all that things (films, variety shows, commercials) he receive more fans from China who doesn't care about EXO.
