I tried with all my might. I thought of the complete opposite actually, yet, still couldn't forget the uniqueness that Miyoung had. It was as if everything around me was in relation to her. I told myself it was infatuation, that she probably doesn't see me the same way, and that I would move on eventually. The pep talk worked for a while, slowly eating away the look and personality I admired so much. Time took its place and soon, I couldn't even make out what her face looked like. Months passed and the only memory I had of her was the black and white striped shirts. Myungsoo wasn't someone I was close to, so it was never brought back to my mind, steadily changing me back to my old self.

The people with the generic look and boring conversations eventually found their place back into my life, replacing Miyoung slowly. Everything was fine and the infatuation disappeared…until it found its way to my mailbox. Myungsoo invited everyone in his contacts to a party, celebrating the couple's one year anniversary since they started dating. It oddly tugged at my heart, paining me that I wasn't the one celebrating my anniversary with Miyoung. Nevertheless, I stood my ground and mustered the courage and strength to stay at the party for at least thirty minutes. Dress code: formal. I found my best shirt and cleanest pair of pants, and with some gel in my hair and a spray of cologne that Mom gifted to me, I set out, already regretting the choice. I grabbed a cheap card and wrote a simple 'congrats' and ventured out to the venue.

The room itself was beautiful. Ecstatic feelings sent through the room, leaving its mark on the hanging lights, black and white lanterns. The tables had pops of color, vibrant yellows and magentas, outdoing any party I have ever attended. I wasn't one for such decorations, but it was shouting Miyoung's personality. Smiling at the thought of being able to see her, I didn't even acknowledged the number of people that entered the room already. Everyone and everything vanished when I saw her figure off in the corner. Her black and white dotted a-frame dress stood out, no others could compete. All the other ladies wearing dresses or skirts made sure their clothes were tight and short. Miyoung stood out, besides being beautiful, but just modest. It made my admiration for her swell. I held the urge to run and hold her in my arms, rather turned to the refreshments.

"Hello big brother!" Jumping, I nearly had a heart attack by the sudden appearance of her. I smiled and congratulated her. She thanked me with a hug, which caused my heart to hurt even more. I sighed and we slowly separated, my fake smile appearing.

"What do you mean 'big brother?'"

"Remember, your most defining moment in life was when your sister was born, making you a big brother! That's my nickname for you now. You see, I love getting to know people and becoming friends, and listening with an attentive ear is the best route. I try to incorporate a nickname of sorts with the information I find out. Want to know why I nicknamed Myungsoo 'Birdie?' Because he said his favorite book is 'To Kill a Mockingbird.'" I couldn't help but laugh, loving her thought process. She went to the jar that held peppermints and grabbed a handful, stuffing them in her pocket.

"I'm going to call you Peppermint then." Miyoung glanced up, surprised by my sudden exclaim. She beamed, elated to have her own nickname. She hugged me again before rushing to tell Myungsoo. I watched as she raced through the banquet, ignoring the elegance and acting like a child. As I was watching her, I felt a hand pat my back.

"Still like her?" Sehun inquired, observing my deflating form. I sighed, angry with myself, yet, feeling bad for myself at the same time. I turned to my companion and nodded with apologetic eyes. "I understand. Maybe you'll find an interest here." I shook my head, knowing Sehun wouldn't understand.

"I'm just going to head home. Tell them I said sorry I didn't stay long." Sehun agreed, mentioning that he hasn't seen them around. I shrugged and headed out, keeping my head low. I got onto the streets, feeling a bit down, but tried to focus on the fact that she was happy.

"If she's happy, I'm happy." I told myself as I kicked a stone, watching it skid across the ground. Something told me that I wasn't going to be truly happy, I was going to miss her, but I'll get over it. I entered my apartment. Falling on the bed, not even considering removing my shoes, I closed my eyes and thought about the big smile she must've had when she told Myungsoo about her new name. Shaking the thought off, I drifted to sleep, washing the thoughts of her away as I escaped into a dreamless night.

It was harsh to do that to myself, but I returned to my small shell, shutting everyone out. I wasn't the same person this time around. I suddenly was interested in the unusual sections in the library, the reference area. That's what brought me to a near empty section, with a few college students savaging the information in encyclopedias. I headed towards the area about our solar system, interested in the Earth's and Sun's relationship. For whatever sense, the travel information stood proud next to the selection I was gazing around. I really wasn't into traveling, but I will admit, visiting a cool country would be fun. It could possibly help with my writing too. I slowly crept to the right side, glancing at the books about various countries.

Oddly, the book about Switzerland stood out against the rest of the others. I pulled out the huge book about the country, flipping through to see the pictures. Photography of mountains and small towns lined the book, giving the country a natural beauty. I placed the book in my blue bag, curious about Switzerland. I almost didn't even notice the girl sitting on the floor besides me. I turned on my heels, almost tripping over her.

"I'm sorry! I didn't mean to- Miyoung?" She grinned and waved, patting the empty floor space next to her, which I gladly accepted.  She revealed the cover of the book she was looking at; Paris: A Travel Guide.

"I'm not going but I would love to. It's so beautiful, don't you think?" I nodded, surprised how she answered my question without me saying anything. I admired her side profile, as her eyes sparkle from reading the book. We sat next to each other, not exchanging words, only the temporary miscellaneous facts about Paris' subways or the food in Paris. For some reason, Miyoung seemed off. She's usually cheerful, asking questions and such. At the moment, she seemed...sad. I didn't want to assume, especially since I didn't know her too well, but I kept the possibility in my head.

She closed the book rather loudly and sat up. I too found my stand on my feet and she smiled before returning the book back in place. I followed her to the desk, both of us checking out our separate books. I started towards the door, waving goodbye and entered the streets. I heard my name from behind me and turned to see a girl in a black skirt chasing after me. Stopping almost instantly, Miyoung grinned, a mischievous look appearing on her face.

"Want to come shopping with me? I need to buy something but I'm awful at being by myself." I nodded, hiding my excitement. She pulled my hand and led me to her destination. We walked—Miyoung pulling on my arm and me being dragged through the bustling streets. After trekking for three blocks, Miyoung abruptly stopped in front of a small shop. Entitled with the name 'Paws and Pals', I got the impression it was some sort of pet shop. My hypothesis really was confirmed when I noticed the little decorations in the windows and on the building. Drawn on, there were comical bones, yarn, tennis balls, and collars of bright pink, neon green, and sky blue, matching the exterior of the place. As we entered, the smell of domestic animals filled my nostrils, almost causing me to gag. Miyoung seemed perfectly fine as she approached the short, glassed walls that separated customers and dogs.

We strolled through the shop, visiting each puppy. Most jumped around, ecstatic to see us. Others performed a heart wrenching performance of puppy eyes, as if pleading for us to bring them home to a new home. Miyoung paused at each one, bending over the glass to pet each puppy. Every single one of them loved it, except one. He sat there calm and received the pats, a smile-like look coming from his facial expression. Miyoung started talking to the dog, treating it different than everyone else.

I read the tag of his information, picking up the facts that he was an Australian Shepherd and Golden Retriever mixed. Even I couldn't resist the puppy's cuteness. The fur was a fluffy mixture of black, gray, golden brown, and white. With deep blue eyes that looked like it was ensuring his smile-like face, the dog was probably the cutest I've seen. I glanced at the name tag on the top of the glass to see a blank paper.

"Yongguk, I really really really need to get this puppy!" Miyoung placed all the emphasis on the last 'really' which was very persuasive.

"Go ahead and get it." Her shoulders fell, her entire demeanor casting a depressed soul.

"My apartment doesn't allow animals."

"Mine does. Keep him at my place." The words escaped before I could even grab onto them. She lit up and reached over the glass wall and grabbed the puppy, bringing him straight to the cashier. I grabbed Puppy Chow, a bed, and various dog items. I reached the counter, placing the items on the check-out strip for the employee to ring the items up. Miyoung already purchased the dog, holding him close to her. I grabbed the bags from the bagger and followed her out of the shop. Letting the puppy down, Miyoung clipped on the blue leash before skipping down the street. I watched her figure stand out compared to everyone else and couldn't stop my forming smile. She seemed happier than earlier, which ultimately made me happier. I wasn't sure what just happened but I was seemingly okay with it

We walked to my apartment, allowing the dog off the leash. He sniffed around my loft, familiarizing with his new home. Miyoung grinned and handed me all his belongings.

"I have to go but I'll see you later, okay? Take care!" She rushed away, leaving me with a nameless puppy. I pat his head before arranging his things. He followed me around as I found places to set his food bowl, bed, and other belongings. After the brief chore, I settled on the couch, which the puppy attempted to climb aboard. I laughed at his failed attempts before picking him up and settling him next to me. He nestled his head next to my thigh and fell asleep, which prompt me to follow him.

I woke up to the sound of a knock at the door. I stumbled to the door, opening it and greeting with a low-pitched voice.

"Did I wake you? I'm sorry Big Brother! I just needed to ask you something," I recognized the sweet, honey-like voice, even with my eyes slightly closed. Clearing my voice and quickly pushing the clutter to the side, I invited her in, asking if she needed anything. "No, just need to talk to you." I led her to the couch, pushing the papers onto the side, and offering her a seat. The puppy rushed to her side, stretching his paws on her legs. She grinned and rubbed his head. The same sad look was evident that day too.

"What's wrong?" I heard a painful sigh, making my heart cringe. I hoped nothing was wrong, just that she wasn't a particular morning person. I doubt that assumption though. I wanted to hug her and fight off whatever's causing her to be different than she usually was. Smoothing out her floral dress, she gave a small smile and cleared her voice, crossing her legs and looking straight into my eyes.

"I need to return all the presents I received the other night, at the party." I choked, surprised by the sudden statement.

"Why? They gave it to you as a gift, what's wrong with that?" Something—a thought was at the back of my mind. There was a small glimpse of hope.

"Myungsoo and I broke up. When I went to tell him my new nickname, I found him kissing some girl. I didn't know who to go to, since everyone at that party were Myungsoo's friends. Then, you even offered your home for the pup, so I guess you're my friend," I contained my excitement and put on a concerning face. Miyoung didn't look hurt, but I can only imagine that it was painful, considering it was their anniversary. I offered her a pat on the shoulder, but she declined it, standing up. "Nothing that a few drinks can't fix!" Miyoung grabbed my hand, pulling me towards the door.

"Miyoung! One thing, I have pajamas on and two, it's eleven in the morning. Maybe later tonight." She turned, wearing it on her shoulders that she was disappointed by the realistic viewpoint, but soon lit up, looking around the house.

"My mom always said, 'when you're sad, pick up a broom!'"

"Interesting philosophy…did she come up with that on her own?"

"No, she always told me to smash a picture but I don't have the resources, so cleaning will do!" She went in search for a broom, noting everything that needed to be cleaned. Once locating a red plastic broom, she started sweeping the loft house, straightening my home. I stood there for a second, quite confused and a bit concerned. Just as I was about to prevent her from doing any more, I realized it may actually help her, so I joined in. After hours of cleaning, we both collapsed on the sofa, exhausted from the seasonal cleaning.

"Want to watch a movie?" I suggested, pulling out my collection from under the ebony coffee table. Miyoung quickly nodded and sifted through the movies, picking out her favorites. We sat back, with a bowl of popcorn, a puppy in between us, and began watching the classic movies, Miyoung exclaiming how fashionable the female protagonists were and how adorable the leading males acted. As the movie marathon came to a close, Miyoung and I got ready to go out for the desired drink. As I got dressed, I was about to just put on the usual t-shirt and pants, but something pushed me into putting on something a bit different, more zesty. Despite not being my usual comfort, I wore an actual suit and my suspenders I kept from a themed party. After matching the already dressy and stylish Miyoung, I led the way to a small bistro downtown, bringing the dog along.

I couldn't help but feel like we came through a time machine. I rolled my sleeves up and was tempted to speak in some different accent but decided against it. Miyoung held onto my arm, pointing out various places I never even noticed. It was nice to see that the breakup didn't affect her that much. It would've been more painful for me to not be able to see her precious smile or her cute laugh after the little puns she occasionally throws into her sentences.

We arrived at the bistro, searching out for Miyoung's much needed drink. We took our orders after being seated outside and Miyoung began drinking, making all the stupid badness leave her mind. I watched her, not taking even a sip, more worried about Miyoung's stability and safety. Once she was to the point where she was babbling, she grabbed me by the shoulders and giggled.

"Let's travel! Let's visit places we've never been! Want to do that with me? I want to do that with me!" With that statement and a finishing giggle, Miyoung passed out, triggering my part in the night. I carried her on my back and held onto the dog's leash, all the way to the house before dropping her off in my bed and releasing the pup. Resting comfortably on the sofa, with the warmth of the dog next to me, I gently fell into a slumberous rhythm. For the last thoughts fro that night, I thought about what her last statement was and chuckled at how drunk she was. With that, I drifted to sleep, dreaming about traveling the world with her. Maybe one day.

"Yongguk, wake up! I need to talk to you!" I shifted and looked at the smiling Miyoung. She sat comfortably on the floor, next to the sofa, as I met her eyes. Though she slept in her dress, she still looked near to perfection, as always. I glanced at the ticking clock on the wall and noticed it was only nine in the morning. The puppy was still asleep, too busy in dreamland to wake up.

"Miyoung, you were drunk last night. Why are you awake now?" She grinned and leaned in close, so nobody could hear.

"Let's go travel! I just bought the tickets!"
