Have you ever thought of becoming an actor?

I had thought about it every day, kept thinking about it, for a very long time, and finally now my dream has

become reality. I’m really happy. There are several reasons (why it took so long), before this, I was

developing my career in Korea… Being invited to act in Somewhere Only We Know was a once-in-a-lifetime

opportunity, it was a good thing that Director Xu found me. I actually really like her (even before acting in

Somewhere Only We Know) and after reading the script I had taken a liking towards this character too. I think

Xu Jinglei is rather charming, and felt that as my first movie, this was a character I was able to understand

and would have confidence in portraying him well, so I accepted the offer.

Did you motivate yourself internally? As your maiden work, did you worry about your performance?

At first I was a little worried, and felt pressured too, because it was my first movie and I was acting as the male

lead already. I was worried that I would not be able to portray the role well, but once we started filming,

Director Xu taught me a lot, as we filmed she would encourage me on-site, give me positive feedback or

advice on how to progress, and slowly I felt that, ah, I can do this.

Singer vs actor - which do you prefer?

I like both of them, these two are rather different, because as a singer I am representing myself, expressing

myself, it’s something of my own, whereas when acting, I am portraying someone else. Thus the overall

feeling would be different, but I like them both.

You said that you really like Xu Jinglei, what do you like about her?

Before working with her, I thought that she was a very good actress and director. I feel that these points will

catch the attention of an actor, just like they do with other people. I’ve been continuously watching her works

so I’ve known about her even then (before we started working together). (When we were working together,)

she took great care of me.

We feel that Xu Jinglei is a very wise woman.

She’s extremely talented, her calligraphy is really beautiful, (when compared to my handwriting,) I’m mortified.

Is she wise in real life?

In life I guess all people are, personalities don’t only have just one side to them. You’re different when you are

with different people, and when she’s with me she’s like a big sister. She takes care of others very well, she is

easy to get along with, at that time I didn’t think “She’s a wise woman†or “She’s a talented womanâ€, I just

thought, “This jiejie is really good.â€

Do you share any similarities with your character?

In some areas yes, and because of these similarities, I believed that I was be able to act his role well. Our

family backgrounds are rather complicated and we were kids who grew up abroad.

We’ve seen the SWOWK character profiles and we feel that Zeyang is someone who is young and yet

very matured.

He’s rather mature, and someone who is very responsible as well. Because similarly to me, growing up in a

single-parent family has made us become more mature at an earlier age, hence the urge to undertake huge

responsibilities such as supporting the family, like a grown man.

Is this why you particularly empathize with your character Zeyang?

Yes, because of our similarities as mentioned.

There are some experiences which Zeyang has gone through, but not you. For example, he has a
daughter.

I definitely don’t have a daughter, actually, he was supposed to have a younger sister but in the end it was
changed to a daughter, in order to give Zeyang’s character more depth, to make his character stand out.
Since I don’t have a daughter, when I first heard about this I was rather shocked, but the moment I met that
little friend (Sophia, the girl who acts as Zeyang’s daughter) I thought she was really cute, and that sparked
the feeling to love her, it was natural and I felt as if I had a daughter myself. (Having a daughter) is really cute,
so in the future I would like to have a child, I’d like to have a daughter too.

When you knew that you were going to act the role of a single father, did you also maintain your idol

image?

To act is to portray another person, why would I still have to carry an idol image? You have to immerse

yourself in the character in able to successfully portray him, so I feel that I will not be held back by this idol

image. I feel that this is very natural, if you ask me to act any role I will, as long as I have an interest in it I’ll

like it.

You said you’ll play any role, for example roles that require you to be ugly - will you be alright with

that?

Yes, but before that I have to be interested in the script, I won’t act for the sake of acting, only if you are

compatible with the role, if you take a liking and interest to it, will you be able to act it well. This is also

something which you should be responsible for towards to viewers.

Will you do intimate scenes?

For intimate scenes, this depends on the script requirements, yeah, if it’s necessary.

If they require you to reveal your body?

For this, yeah, if it’s required in the plot…

So you would reveal your body?

Yeah, why won’t I be able to, but right now I have no intentions of accepting such roles. Currently I don’t have

such offers too because perhaps now I’m still young.

Usually when we see you, you don’t speak a lot and you have a cold, cool aura, does that scare

children?

I get along very well with children, because when I’m not familiar with people I’ll have that (cold, cool) aura,

after we get to know each other I get talkative. When I take a look at her (Sophia) she’s really happy, we

communicate with our eyes. Actually children are really simple, you don’t have to say much, just be with them,

hold their hands, hug them, kiss them, it’s that simple.

You seem to be someone who gets along with children easily, is it right to say that you’re a person

with lots of love?

I really like children, so I’ve said that in the future, it’ll be good if I can have a daughter.

In the movie, not only do you act with your on-screen mother and daughter, you also share love

scenes with Wang Likun.  We felt that you debuted rather early, so have you any experience on love

before?

When I was 5 years old, in kindergarten. Having to shoot romantic scenes was what made me very nervous,

as it was my first movie. However Wang Likun is a very professional actress, she knows how to portray her

role well. Because for interactive scenes as such, the emotions of both characters has to be in sync, and her

good acting has helped to bring me into character. As a result it was much easier, much better than expected.

It was a little awkward at the beginning but the more I filmed, the smoother the process was.

What kind of woman is Wang Likun’s character?

She’s someone who has been emotionally hurt to a great extent, and basically she wanted to leave for a

place where she could be in solitude. After that, she did some crazy stuff. My character meets her very

coincidentally and things between them develop in an unconventional manner. Gradually after time, feelings

develop, and I feel that this is very touching love story. I feel that her situation at present is something which is

experienced by many people - the sense of self-loathing and urge to give up on oneself after receiving

emotional hurt, this is something which is really hard to avoid.

Have you experienced any relationship setbacks/been hurt in relationships?

Me? I’ve never experienced heartbreak, hahahaha

In the movie, love means ending up together. What are your views on love?

I feel that anything is possible, there’s no ultimate answer, for such a thing as love I feel that one cannot be

absolutely sure what will happen next, because anything can happen anytime and anywhere. I believe in fate

and I feel that one should believe in love, don’t turn down nor lose hope in the future just because of certain

experiences which you’ve been through in the past. I feel that as long as you believe in love a little, have the

hope that you will be able to find love, you will meet the person who is right for you. I feel that after watching

this movie, the audience will be feel more love, be happier and have a sense of warmth in their hearts.

You are someone who believes in love, so what are your thoughts on love?

Yes I believe in love. Love is… A love that I wish for is long lasting, stable, and with hope. How do I say this…

It’s something that is more pure, and peaceful. I feel that when two people are together, even when both

parties do not speak nor communicate with each other, there is a sense of mutual understanding whereby

both parties do not feel awkward and the atmosphere is very comfortable… that feeling is really good, and

rather romantic, there’s no need to do anything especially romantic, but at times intentionally do (romantic

stuff). I guess I am not the type who does a lot of romantic acts.

You’re 24, you should be dating and experiencing love while in your youth, but you’re so busy you

don’t even have the time to get heartbroken, don’t you feel a little regretful?

You can’t have everything, so it’s still alright, because by choosing this line of work, there are times which you

have to strive hard too, so currently I won’t think too much, I guess we’ll see how things go in the future. I’ll

leave it to fate, right now I’m working hard on the things I want to do first.

Will you look forward to it?

Who doesn’t look forward to love! Perhaps everyone looks forward to love. Being in love is great, isn’t it, it’s

something to be happy about, but right now my focus is on my career.

Have you changed in any way after filming Somewhere Only We Know?

I’ve learnt many things, I’ve learnt many things acting-wise, as well as experienced many firsts. I’ve gained a

lot but I’m still myself.

Which is harder, being a singer or being an actor?

The two of them are completely different, filming movies is rather tedious too, non-stop filming every day, the

duration of the whole process is longer too, but it all boils down to this - if you like something you won’t feel

that it is too toilsome, you won’t feel that tired, you’ll definitely love it and think it’s really interesting. Establish

your role and act it well, make your character vivid, till the point where he is real, and you’ll feel a sense of

accomplishment. This feeling is something which I feel every actor should have, thus I feel that maintaining

this attitude will not cause me to feel too tired. As for music, it feels more like I’m having a good time, I

produce music at my own time and pace and do what I like. If you don’t like music, I don’t think you can

produce good music. The songs you sing, your own works - they all resonate a part of yourself, if you like

music and it shows in your work, how could you feel that it is toilsome? You shouldn’t.

After becoming an actor, or perhaps right now when your focus is on acting, comparing yourself to

when you were a singer, what differences are there in your life?

Actually I didn’t mention that I would definitely focus on acting, I hope that I can find a balance point between

both singing and acting, but because there are time constraints, I can’t equally balance both. However, I hope

that be it acting or singing, I will be able to continually produce works for everyone.

While you were still a singer, you were under closely guarded/protected (by the management), and

you had a rather distant, closed-off idol image. Did you have any intentions of changing this image?

I didn’t think too much about such things, I guess I’d just let it be, just be my natural self, there’s no specific

image I need to maintain, because I feel that I am constantly changing, I feel that my works are more

important, the overall form and sense of closeness (with my works) are good, it’s something captured at that

time and moment.

Do you enjoy the life of being a singer constantly in the public eye and with many fans crazy over

you?

I feel that this sense of enjoyment, of standing on stage, can only be experienced by singers and is something

which actors cannot experience. Actually every time I appear on stage I will be nervous, even after quite some

time after my debut I’m still nervous. I’ll think, wow, so many people are cheering for me, I definitely have to

perform well. This kind of enthusiasm and passion for music is felt once I am on stage, and the feeling that

the stage belongs to me - the feeling is different (from being an actor). Music is something that ignites

passion, enables people to feel youthful, and is something that can make you feel energetic always. Music is

really, really meaningful, so I like both (singing and acting) and of course as always, I am very thankful to my

fans for their constant support towards me.

When faced with so many fans who chase you crazily, do you find it tiresome or a feel a sense of

pressure?

At times I will be pressured, because everyone has different people they look up to and set as role models,

and I hope to bring some positivity and happiness to them. I feel that the best thing I can do is to enable those

whom support me to feel that liking me is something good and worthwhile. As for my works, I feel that the

most important is that they would feel that it’s worth it to continue watching them, and liking them. As for other

things, it’s alright, it’s an unspoken understanding that once you’ve chosen this line of work you have to

definitely have to accept such things.
