Why Red Velvet won GDA and SMA Newcomer Awards?

This is one of the questions that Kpop people frequently asked recently. Therefore, I will try to explain it with my limited English. Before I explain about the awards, I want to list some facts about Red Velvet in 2014:

#2 in digital sales behind Mamamoo with around 400,000 digital sales.

#2 in Daum Fancafe members ranking for 2014 new girl group behind Lovelyz.

#1 in Facebook likes by a margin among new girl group.

#1 in Youtube views among 2014 girl group.

#1 in Twitter, Daum, Naver, DC Inside, Nate Pann, and Instiz mentions among 2014 girl group.

#1/highest Melon's debut among the girl group. (debut at #8)

Other music chart's debut spot: #1 in Olleh, Genie, and Bugs; #2 Daum, #7 Mnet, #7, Naver, #8 Soribada, #16 iChart; and #30 Monkey3. iTunes Chart: (#3 in Singapore and Taiwan, #4 in Malaysia, #5 in Thailand, #9 in HK, and charted in other 6 countries - Indonesia, Chile, Belarus, Finland, Sweden, and the Philippines).

So, their popularity among 2014 girl group is no joke.

First, let's see Korean Entertainment Arts Award - Rookie Artist Award 2011-2014 winners:

2011: Teen Top and Girl's Day

2012: EXO-K and Juniel

2013: Boys Republic and Ladies Code

2014: Topp Dogg and Red Velvet

I don't know what the merit and criteria for this but if others deserve it, Red Velvet deserves it too.

Next, for GDA, the nominees for New Artist Award are High4, Got7, Park Boram, Winner, Akdong Musician, Red Velvet, Eddy Kim, and Bernard Park. The voting ended with Winner, Got7, and Bernard Park got the highest three votes and Red Velvet got the highest vote among the female nominees. Therefore, they won it because they are the most popular rookie girl group according to the votes (at least one girl group/solo win this award every year).

About SMA, we know that KBS is currently not in a good term with YG. That's why there is no winners from YG for SMA 2014. In addition, SMA is just like GDA where at least one girl group/solo would win the Newcomer Awards. So, RV was competing against Mamamoo, Lovelyz, Laboum, and Park Boram adn they got the highest votes again.People argue that RV's digital sales are not that good. Yes, it is not good but they are third behind Park Boram and Mamamoo. While Park Boram Mamamoo got the edge in digital sales, RV got the very big edge in popularity and voting compare to them.

About AKMU, I also think that they deserve to win some rookie awards but that does not mean you guys have to discredit Red Velvet's wins. RV competes against the girl groups not AKMU. So, this question, we have to ask the organizers.

tl;dr: In previous years, most of the rookie awards have at least one female group/solo winner. So, for 2014, although RV's sales are not good (#2 among new girl group), their popularity and voting percentages difference are very huge compare to the other new girl group. So, they won it because of their popularity (yes I admit that) and popularity is one of the criteria to win those awards. Therefore, they deserve to win the awards that they won.

Yes, once again, popularity won most of the idols awards and it helps RV to win the awards too. If you guys discredit RV's awards, you have to discredit other idols's awards too.

they're the most popular 2014 rookie girl group so obviously.

and if someone talks about how SM power helped them then its not even something bad lmao since everyone else would kill for that advantage. SM obviously gave them most of their popularity but that's why SM is SM, and the Big 3 are so revered by aspirants  :hoplz:

"While Park Boram Mamamoo got the edge in digital sales, RV got the very big edge in popularity and voting compare to them."

Isn't the difference n digital sales between Park Boram and Red Velvet huge, though? I remember her doing extremely well, so it's probably more than just an edge.

she's a soloist

the award distribution is : boy group-girl group-soloist

plus she was extremely behind in fan votes

All of this is fluff. It's not even counted.

So Mamamoo's two digital singer lead is much bigger (if they included OSTs it's even bigger). Plus they released two physical albums with 3k+ sales. Park Boram had the biggest digital hits of the year. So it wasn't just a "slight edge".

It is fluffed but it leads them to winning the popularity. Actually, they count debut singles only, not all. Yeah, Park Boram got huge lead in digital with Beautiful and Mr Ambiguous and Happiness digital sales are not that far.

However, the voting difference favors RV (they got around 4.something% while Park Boram and Mamamoo 0.something %).

However, I agree with all of you. It is because of SM and these four girls are the selected one from thousands auditioners.

Honestly. It's completely unfair for YG fandoms. They spend all their time on voting, and buying only to find out that YG will never win due to conflict with KBS.

The conflict is well known though, so why bother in the first place?
