“Running Man Makes a Lot of Money Abroad Despite Weak Domestic Performances

Variety program “Running Man†has become the best cash cow for SBS as the show has met with great success in China.

The Chinese version of “Running Man,†“Hurry Up, Brother,†premiered in October of 2014 with a rating of 1.149%, an amazing feat for a television program in mainland China. The remake continues to be popular, as a theatrical version of the show is in production.

A broadcast insider told media outlet Sports DongA, “‘Running Man’ is truly the best thing to happen to SBS. It made up for all of SBS’ alone.â€

They further added, “The exact contract terms are not known, but the word on the street is that they have signed up for at least three seasons of the remake in China. The movie version is also coming out soon. They probably made at least 30 billion won (approximately $27 million USD) so far.â€

They also commented, “The particular reason why ‘Running Man’ is SBS’ best program is because SBS didn’t invest any money into its Chinese adaptation. SBS just sent over two producers to China to help produce the show. Yet they’re making such a profit.â€

Domestically, “Running Man†has seen a weaker year in 2014, often falling last place in ratings in its time slot. Currently it is in second place after “1 Night 2 Days Season 3.â€

Well, 2014 is definitely one of RM's worst year in terms ratings, in late 2011-2012 they easily hit 20 % :rlytearpls:
if only the pd be more creative + SBS's director not being stupid consecutively putting 2 bad programs to lead RM in Good Sunday ( RoomMate + Barefoot)

a movie version? wat

Set to aired on 30 Jan..

Kim Jong Kook also get a role there

The PD has been pretty creative recently--I've liked their most recent episodes, though idk if these were episodes that were already written before Cho PD left.

Yup, I think in terms of content , 2014 definitely better than 2013,  but the ratings completely went down when Room Mate is the lead for Good Sunday..

Now with Kpop-Star Airing, Running Man back to decent ratings , 11-12 %

Wait can they get paid from licensing 'remakes'?

Does Running man have to pay Run for the Money Tousouchuu, Tetsuwan Dash or the other Japanese shows that it copied? lol

I doubt it even tho its an obvious copy. Its like X Factor/ American idol/ other spin offs. There's just enough difference in the formatting that they escape outright plagiarism.

I think selling US broadcast rights for Running Man to a network here would be a good way to generate more revenue. I personally think that Running Man is the kind of show that could do well here. Pretty much the only show we have a vaguely similar style is Survivor or The Amazing Race.

I'm surprised it hasn't happened already. It might be hard to find a permanent celebrity cast though.
