Gu Family Book Ep11

 from Nate article:
"Lee Seung Gi gentle care attracts attention. Even though Seung Gi did not appear in the camera, he stood beside Suzy, continously running through the dialogue with her. In order to let Suzy goes into the right emotion for this scene, Seung Gi kept calling 'Yeo Wool ahh'. Under the help of Seung Gi, Suzy cries. PD Shin gives the OK Signal with one take."

I've heard that Suji doesn't appear until quite far into episode 3...

Idk if I can sit through almost 2 hours of this drama without Suji.

I'll have to, so I understand the plot and stuff.

Yes. The first two episodes are KangChi's parent's story.

But it's good stuff too and I really like the lovestory of his parents.

[iNTERVIEW] More Melodrama Will Be on “Kang Chi, the Beginning†– Part 1

MBC series “Kang Chi, the Beginning†has passed the halfway point. The fantasy period drama had approached the audience with the unfamiliar subject material of ‘half-man-half-beast’ but its gripping script, elaborate directing and stable cast have come together harmoniously to serve as a breath of fresh air to the Monday and Tuesday drama lineup.

The tough action scenes, where one flies across the mountains on wires, could be exhausting but the chemistry between the cast members has been pleasant and natural. And it doesn’t necessarily seem to be so because it is the most-watched primetime series in its time slot.

TenAsia listened to what was said by the show’s three main actors Lee Seung-gi, Suzy and Yoo Dong-geun who are only no closer to being at ease with the show’s success so far.

Q. The drama has reached its halfway point. What is your impression?

Lee Seung-gi [Lee]: Before starting this series, people around me were concerned and I myself was nervous. There were lots of challenges for me as it’s my first historical drama and I had less at risk with my previous works because I was partnered with skilled actresses. In particular, I wasn’t sure whether us young actors could lead the whole story as main actors. I just focused on being Kang-chi as he is described in the script. I think there is a certain power to the story and producer Shin Woo-cheol’s sophisticated directing created a synergy effect with it.

Suzy: I was very worried in that I don’t have many acting experiences and it’s my first historical drama. I was just sure about doing a good job with playing my character Yeo-wul and I really wanted to do it. I did my best with a firm belief in the producer and writer.

Yoo Dong-geun [Yoo]: I figured there would be a certain message the series’ character Lee Soon-shin would deliver as a historic figure. There was also a learn I could learn from Kang-chi, who struggles to be human when there are lots of people in this world that don’t act like them. It also reminded me of our belief and trust. Above all, I feel grateful for the director and writer who went for the challenge of taking up a difficult genre. I’d like for them to work on a more traditional historical series later on.

Q. Lee Seung-gi and Suzy drew much anticipation nicknamed ‘the encounter of the nation’s little brother and the nation’s first love.’ What has it actually been like working together?

Lee: She is the first acting partner who is younger than me. I’d focused only on my own parts before since I had always acted with actresses with more experiences than me. But this time there were several actors who had less experience than me, so I realized that I needed to be more active. And I’ve enjoyed talking to Suzy about the ideal image we have of her character Yeo-wul and talking about it. I used to adjust things to the scene according to what my senior actors had already made but this time we made them together. Suzy, as a 20-year-old actress, is innocent in many ways. She didn’t use any tricks on set too. She is a girl with simple honesty.

Suzy: Lee is just like I thought he would be. He took care of me and helped me a lot which made it very easy for me to act. He is a funny guy too, so he livened up the atmosphere on set.

Q. Lee, your work on depicting the half-man-half-beast Kang-chi, which is easy to seem weird, is receiving compliment from the audience.

Lee: I’m a big fan of cartoons, so I had pictured what it would be like for me to turn into a beast but I wasn’t sure it would appeal to the audience. It is such a relief that Kang-chi is a convincing character. I used to restrain my feelings in my previous modern dramas but there are lots of dramatic parts to “Kang Chi, the Beginning†so I express myself more as well, probably 20 points more than I usually would.

Q. The scene where Kang-chi puts his hand on Yeo-wul’s chest and realizes she is a girl made headlines.

Lee: You know, there is no explaining I can do about that. (laugh) I did the best I could according to what the script and director told me. I made a lot of effort to do it without any personal feelings. But after the scene aired, there has been less reaction from male visitors on the set so I think they must be fans of Suzy.

* Correction: The official name of MBC’s current Monday and Tuesday is “Kang Chi, the Beginning,†not “The Gu Family Book†as TenAsia has reported in the past.

Part 2

Q. What are the biggest charms of the two female characters Cheong-jo [Lee Yubi] and Yeo-wul [suzy], who are both in love with Kang-chi?

Lee: Cheong-jo represents a strong female figure that looks at the world realistically and with a cool head. She also has an elegance from being raised in a noble family. That exclusivity seems to be what attracts Kang-chi. On the other hand, Yeo-wul is a new type of female figure that only looks up to Kang-chi like a sunflower and helps him out.

Q. Suzy, this is your first historical drama and and your first character with action skills. It may have not been easy for you.

Suzy: I’ve exercised since I was young so I enjoyed learning action skills before we started filming. But things didn’t go smoothly as I thought they would while trying to put on the right facial expressions at the same time. It was somewhat tough physically, as well.

Q. What about “Kang Chi, the Beginning†do you think is appealing as a fantasy period drama?

Yoo: In my opinion, I felt that it’s not a good idea to try to give viewers a lesson on history. I also felt that a historical drama needs to have a global sensitivity about it with thorough directing and script along with a great ensemble of a cast. And this drama possesses all of them. I was surprised at its interesting story and the delicate direction through which my character Lee Soon-shin is fused in.

Q. Expectations over the drama are increasing, especially regarding the romance.

Lee: I consider romantic acting the most difficult. I become nervous because there seems to be no right answer. I think you need good communication with your partner, instead of techniques, for such acting. In that sense, Suzy expresses many feelings in her eyes so I think it won’t be hard to express my feelings by looking into her eyes when acting. After the character Koo Wol-ryeong [Choi Jin-hyuk] appears, the destinies of many will be unveiled one by one and lots of stories will come forward. So I think it’ll be a painful melodrama.

Suzy: Yeowool is becoming increasingly feminine and prettier after meeting Kang-chi. (laugh) And as this progresses, I think it’ll bring out the natural sides to Kang-chi and Yeo-wul.

Q. Yeo-wul went against her fate to meet Kang-chi. Are you actually similar to Yeo-wul in any way?

Suzy: I’m the type that does what I want no matter what people say. I’m stubborn so I easily regret too. I feel that Yeo-wul’s way of loving is by doing anything for Kang-chi and helping him as far as she can. Those parts seem to be similar to me.

Q. What was the most impressive scene?

Lee: It’s the scene of Kang-chi having a private meeting with admiral Lee Soon-shin [Yoo Dong-geun]. My tears flowed at the thought of talking with real Lee Soon-shin alone as I filmed it. I couldn’t control the burning sensation inside of me so I felt like I was almost possessed by a spirit. When I thought about how to shoot this scene, I thought I would have to raise the level of my emotions. But then Yoo advised, ‘It’s right to do it with serenity because the message that the writer tries to cast is important in the scene.’ I was so grateful for him for making me feel those emotions inside me.

Q. What is the message of “Kang Chi, the Beginning†to the audience?

Lee: I’m not capable of taking a message into consideration when acting. I’m not seasoned enough to consider the deep meaning to a drama but I feel that the writer Kang Eun-gyeong is such a warm-hearted person. She seems to deliver what it is like to live as a human, what is the right mindset and attitude for relationships through the half-man-half-beast Kangchi’s spectacular story. It’s a great story to show people with conflicts as well as what a good figure is.
