Dear fellow sones, we should all learn from this..

For me, the most affecting part of the Gayo Daejeons this week have been the cathartic tributes to Korean rock legend Shin Hae Chul, who unnecessarily died in an apparent medical malpractice incident after surgery on 27 October of this year. He was more than a musician, he used his popularity as a shield in order to speak his mind freely in a society that didn't have free speech. My Seoul roommate became very emotional when we watched the SBS gayo. "There was nobody like him," she said, "We weren't able to say everything we wanted, but we were so happy somebody could."

Shin Hae Chul should be thanked every day by SONE. After the Dream Concert in 2008, when fandoms organized to turn off their lightsticks while SNSD performed, the ultimate sign of disrespect, he spoke out on his radio show against the actions of ELF, Cassiopeia and Wonderful, and played Girls' Generation songs non-stop for the rest of his show.

"What do these fans think they can achieve by not clapping, turning their glowsticks off, etc?" he said to his listeners all over the country. "They don't help the Korean music industry in any way nor are they stopping it from advancing. If you like the performance, clap your hands. If you don't like the performance, then don't clap and that's it. This bullying tradition will not be forgiven if it was played out in other countries. I hope that So Nyeo Shi Dae will not be hurt by the actions of these low-class fans."

I was not here for the Black Ocean, and neither were a lot of current Sones, as evidenced by the hundreds of "who's that?" comments on Sooyoung's Instagram tribute after his death (http://instagram.com/p/so5-HlrVve ). I consider myself to be a mere fraction of the man he was, and I have no real lessons to teach. But his enemy is the same as mine: negativity. After Shin Hae Chul spoke out on GG's behalf, many Koreans who didn't even care for pop music rallied to support the group against this ugliness. If he hadn't said what he did, they would not be the Nation's Singers. SONE would not be too large to collapse right now if it wasn't for him. Respect.

But SONE has completely forgotten his lesson. When I think about the current fanwars and Shin Hae Chul's speech at the same time, it only shows how absurd and bizarre the current situation is. We are acting just as terribly as those other fandoms did in 2008, but we are even worse and we have even more to be ashamed of. We've turned in on ourselves and are bullying fellow Sones. If you don't like OT8, if you don't like members who aren't your bias, if you don't like Jessica, if you don't like "Mr. Mr", if you don't like what's happening... then don't clap and that's it. Don't. Clap. And. That's. It.

:rlytearpls:  to ChicagoSone and Taemi.. lemme just hug you.

A lot of OT8 and Jessica stans should read this and learn from it

The benefits of being a user on internet is that you're not obliged to learn any lesson and no one will be able to do anything to you.

So I doubt they'll learn.
