Roy Kim's agency release full statement regarding his plagiarism controversy

Recommended Posts

Roy Kim′s agency has stepped out to deny accusations that Roy Kim′s Spring, Spring, Spring plagiarised off of another song by a different singer.

On July 16, it issued a press release titled ′Official stance on the controversies surrounding Roy Kim′s "Spring, Spring, Spring"′, and said it confirmed that the song had been created purely by the composers and arrangers it is listed under.

It also revealed it had consulted many experts on the issue, and that they had also agreed that the piece hadn′t been plagiarised.

What follows is the full statement from the agency:

Hello.

This is CJ E&M′s Music Team, in charge of Roy Kim′s album productions and management.

We wish to touch on the speculations that Roy Kim′s Spring, Spring, Spring is somewhat similar to Acoustic Rain′s Love is Canon.

1. The song was composed by Roy Kim and Bae Young Kyung, and arranged by Jung Ji Chan and Kim Sung Yoon. It was created purely by these composers and arrangers, and they all confirmed that they had never heard Acoustic Rain′s Love is Canon before. They also said they had never even been aware of the existence of the song or the singer before the controversy.

2. The ukulele version of Love is Canon, which is the main object of concern, was, according to data from the Korea Music Copyright Association, listed for copyright on May 15, 2013. This is after Roy Kim′s Spring, Spring, Spring was listed on April 22, 2013. This proves that Roy Kim′s Spring, Spring, Spring has nothing to do with the song in question.

We consulted experts on the opinion that the intro to Roy Kim′s Spring, Spring, Spring resembles that of the original Love is Canon, which was listed for copyright in March 2012, but they have concluded that it is not an incident of plagiarism. At this, we wish to ask that you stop spreading any more rumors or guesswork.

3. Roy Kim, who composed, lyricized and sang the song, has been feeling pain and responsibility regarding the controversy, and said he would be more careful with his words and actions in the future. He also said he would continue to pursue music with a passion. Thank you.

Well legally they wont get plagia charges.

But any untrained ears can see that the melody is exactly the same (minus two or three notes) in both songs for more than 30 minutes.

To say, they didnt even sample it ia bullshit to me...

Oh well i like the song anyway, bu disappointed.

Seems like someone's been trying to ruin Roy Kim's career /:
I'm glad CJ E&M actually checked with Korea Music Copyright Association~ ♥

but the original version of the song is not that similar to the BomBomBom, but the ukelele version is...which was released after BomBomBom~

*Listens to both songs* oh my...

They're different enough overall that it really seems like a coincidence though. Simple tunes like that get reproduced quite a bit.

I think it's a coincidence, sometimes they do happen.

In this day and age how hard is it to find a song that sounds nothing like anything else?

There are so many songs and so many tunes and obviously there will be overlap.

Just because one person thinks of something, doesn't mean no one else will ever think to put those notes together.

If you listen hard enough Henry's Trapped sounds like Chopsticks. lol

The ukelele version was released after??? Isnt Rain in the army?

I understood it was listed for copyrights on May 2013, but not that it was released at that time.... Thats why I say that legally they wont be charged...

Oh in that case, they dont even need to say its sampled. Then why netizens freaked out on Roy Kim? Why didnt they say its Rain that plagiarized...

Anyway, I hope Roy Kim wont suffer from this!!

The original version here. Not the ukulele version.

Idk whether Roy Kim plagiarized this song but there are some similar parts.

Interesting to see Bom Bom Bom listed for copyright before the Love is Canon ukelele version.

Although imo Bom Bom Bom is also similar to the original version which was released much earlier.

I'm not a hater. Just stating my opinion.

I hope he will be ok after this scandal though. Plagiarism is a very serious allegation for a composer.

And this is why every new musician should be paranoid, way too many songs pop songs use similar chord progressions so the melodies that work with those chords naturally become limited.

Here's some cool info about this for anyone who cares
