Nikkei Ent. (Soundscan) Yearly Rankings 2014

Took a while to properly find and format these, but here they are; as a reminder, Soundscan doesn't count shops like avex's Mu-mo and AKB48's Chara-Ani (or imported albums, for that matter), so this is more of a representation of what those who use conventional purchase methods in Japan (i.e. music/convenience stores and unaffiliated online retailers) are buying.  Nonetheless, enjoy!

As always the single chart remains predictable, although it is interesting to see the difference in number of versions.

The album chart is a lot more diverse (like always), but there are a few best and covers albums on it, which makes the original studios albums on there a little more interesting to me.

Anyways yay to BUMP~

Yes, Oricon reports 432,005 copies sold which is not too far from Soundscan report

I didn't know Soundscan could have higher numbers than Oricon... Does Soundscan count all copies then? If so, then Ballada must've been just outside Oricon's top 300 for many weeks... I just don't get it. And I thought Soundscan didn't count all copies bought online...

I'm confused too it's the first time I see Soundscan numbers higher than Oricon, not sure if they are legit btw

Soundscan is more legit because they don't include all the gimmicks. Oricon only counts physical releases

Soundscan also separates releases so each version is counted alone in weekly ranking. That is assumed to be more accurate representation of individual buyers. In yearly ranking all versions are counted together (that why yearly AKB does infinitely better than weeky, for example). Oricon problem is also we can never be sure how accurate label-connected stores data is - you have labels basically self-reporting so if they want to report 100.000 sold instead of 10.000 for example it's much easier to do than in an independent store.

Sure they can be higher, especially on a yearly chart. Weekly is more difficult if there's more than one version, since the numbers are split but yearly it's very doable. It just depends where most of your sales come from. I'm pretty sure Soundscan covers more shops, but they exclude some specific ones (those that are label-related for example). I'm not sure on this one, but don't they still count the exports? I know Oricon stopped this year and that contributed to somehow smaller numbers for artists popular outside Japan. There's also digital sales that can change the numbers -  48 groups do OK with that and Johnnys don't at all (since they don't release digitally at all).

Besides, does anyone have really higher numbers? I checked Arashi and it's about 10.000 + in Soundscan favour which could easily be exports (if Soundscan still counts them?) or smaller shops sales.

Soundscan counts exports, though I don't actually think they cover more stores - Oricon does in terms of actual store count, it's really other miscellaneous sales that make up the difference (promo albums, etc. that are generally shipped as freebies and such). That being said, the only album that I've seen thus far where the Soundscan number was higher is the Let It Go soundtrack.

Soundscan number sometimes higher even before oricon stop counting exports. Off the top of my head I remember Momoclo's album 5th Dimension have higher soundscan number, and I know there re a lot more. I'm too lazy to search for them.
