Good list. Also Human League, Thompson Twins, Wham!, Daryl Hall & John Oates, Pet Shop Boys, Yazoo... the list is endless...

Edit: When one compares that list with what western pop music has to offer now, it's no wonder why so many gravitate to j-pop/k-pop.

Duran Duran and Depeche Mode are two of the most influential bands of the decade. Both for different, trendsetting reasons. Of course on a grand scale, bands like The Police and U2 have probably had more of a mainstream following because of the type of music they make, but if we're talking about real legends of pop culture, and artists that defined the MTV generation/music of that time, look no further than DD and DM. I mean, I still hear DD's Rio and Hungry Like The Wolf played in nightclubs and DM's Enjoy The Silence is a timeless classic. What's even more incredible is that Duran Duran and Depeche Mode are two bands who are actually still making music, and have continued to make music and yield hits all throughout the '90s and '00s. In fact, some of their best songs aren't even from their '80s albums.

All in all, I'm just really passionate about these two bands because their music rules, Simon Le Bon and Martin Gore are unbelievable lyricists, and their cult following and mass impact has shaped the way I look at music and music videos. I would probably be a totally different person today if I never came across these bands. So yeah, I vote for them.

Literally all of them are trash besides its 2014 now move on

Sad.

that's clearly not true. everybody has different taste no matter when the music was released. there are bands here who have done great stuff and artists now who are doing great stuff. just because it's older doesn't mean people shouldn't still be allowed to enjoy it.

Wasn't Duran Duran visually inspired by Japan ? David Sylvian was the first thing that came to my mind when I saw them, particularly when I saw Nick Rhodes.

Morrissey has habitually talked shit about other artists and has made himself look stupid over asinine comments about politics, race, and society. As for Duran Duran and Japan, they were both fairly involved in the New Romantic movement of the late '70s - early '80s. There were a lot of local bands around London and Birmingham that took on this concept and visage (Japan and Duran Duran (and Spandau Ballet) were just the only bands to get anywhere, with Japan having commercial success compared to Duran Duran). So it's not accurate, or reasonable to say one band took from the other or was inspired when this was basically a subculture that loads of people were into at the time.

Oh, I suppose this will just remain my theory then. Do you know if Duran Duran has ever mentioned Japan/David Sylvian ? Do you like Japan ?

The only Japan song that I moderately like is Gentlemen Take Polaroids. And no, Duran Duran has never mentioned Japan or David. By the time Duran Duran were starting to make it big in 1982, Japan had disbanded.

Oh.. I like that one, have you listened to a lot of songs ? I think Night porter and Ghosts are also great  :ahmagah: But they're a personal favourite, although I have only heard a few songs.
